Just wanted to through some links together. I'm at work, this post is rushed as always so their are some repeated links. It can be a pain to find them in a pinch.

Cheers for the info. Would submitting an article to bing supersede submitting it to yahoo? Or are they still separately managed
 
all 3 are separate

you would index the homepage, not the article itself unless you were like a professor and wanted to link an article you published from a major news source etc.

steps:
1. submit your url to each of the 3 search engines
2. create a sitemap and submit that (this will help index). i only do this if you have an autoupdating sitemap such as blogger, weebly, webnode services. otherwise skip this step
3. get verified with a meta tag to prove your site ownership

4. if its a blog, submit the blog to each search engines "ping" service. this will ping each update to them. again the homepage not the article

5. subscribe to your own rss feeds in google reader to help them get indexed quicker. if google has to read it for you, its an instant way to get indexed.

what are your goals, with ads or without?

if you havea niche local company google ads can be useful but i found that if you don't pay 1$ per click you have way less clicks.

it kind of sucks. when we paid 5-75 cents a click, we would only get about 1000 views and 10 clicks per month.

changed it to 1$, we get 1000 views every 2 days and 10 clicks every 2 days but who can afford that?

this was for a vet clinic

5 factors that help:
1. fix errors in your code so your entire site is indexed. lots of errors= search engines stop caring. this can improve seo by 10-30% from my experience. my free weebly sites have 1000+ errors in the generated code i can't fix, they have lower seo because of this.

2. if you have static info or a dynamic sitemap, get it verified with bing/google/yahoo. also get any verification meta tags to verify site ownership and add them.

3. use H2 and other header tags as much possible. this helps bing/yahoo indexing.

4. use meta tags, it helps with smaller search engines and yahoo. google ignores them in theory. also helps with some link previews if it is shared.

5. submit your domain, blog (rss feeds) to submit url webmaster sites (listed above). also find the "ping" pages for search engines to "ping" your rss feeds to their search engine as well.


and hey there is a 6th:
as stated earlier subscribe to all of your own rss feeds in yahoo, google etc to help get them indexed. if google is feeding you an rss feed from your site in google reader, it means it is indexing it.
