Seagate: Hard Disk Drives Set To Stay Relevant For 20 Years

Magnetic storage can be written and then powered down. Years later the data will still be there. Not so with solid state drives.

I have a 60GB OCZ drive here I haven't had powered on or plugged into anything for a touch over 3 years now. I bought it for my Chromebook in 2012. I decided to upgrade the Chromebook SSD from this 60GB SSD to a 120GB Samsung one because the 60GB one was too thick to close the bottom panel properly.

It's been sitting in a cardboard box since.

Plugged it in just now and everything is still there as I left it. Including the movies I loaded up on it to watch.

They're playing back just fine.

Don't even get me started on how old some of these flash drives must be and how long it's been since I've had them plugged into anything.
