is this drive really 6TB or is it more like 5.2 or 5.5TB?

NO false.

Seagate just dropped a 8TB non SMR enterprise drives. @DPI is completely wrong.

"oh em gee rolleyes they just announced a new enterprise drive thats not even for sale yet". Very relevant here in deal-hunter, thank you.

I think this is wrong. It says in the specifications 6 disks / 12 heads. For SMR I would have expected less disks and less heads. Yes I know they do have that reversed (12/6) instead of (6/12).

Thank you for that, I stand corrected then based on these 2015 refreshes to the >4TB line, because last time I checked they still weren't disclosing platter counts on the >4TB stuff in their spec sheets. Which is how I got suckered into a batch of ST5000DM001's, only to find out they were SMR when they'd appear to freeze for 30 seconds at a time during write ops.

So ST5000DM002 6/12 is the new ST5000DM001 4/8 (SMR), and ST6000DM001 6/12 replaced ST6000DM000 4/8 (SMR). Mind those model numbers, kids. I suspect there will continue to be confusion as the old 4/8 SMR drives are blown from inventories.
