Scythe Ninja 5 CPU Air Cooler Review


The Scythe Ninja 5 is a very big CPU heatsink with a lot of cooling fin area, so we expect a lot out of it. The Ninja 5 also comes in a push / pull configuration out of the box. It has cutaways for taller DIMMs and professes to be "ultra silent." Let's put it on this highly overvolted Ryzen 7 and see how it handles over 140 watts of power.

I never thought Scythe would bring back the Ninja.

It's good to see it perform quite well against higher wattage CPUs.

I always wanted a Scythe Ninja, but it was either too expensive, or too big. Glad to see it make a comeback, though the same issues remain.

The thing is, there seems to be a LOT of margin/profit at this price point.
 
Perplexing at the placement of 212evo, trs140d and the dark rock4. Maybe comes down to the fan.

I ordered a mugen 5 rev b on nov. 30th and it says it wont arrive until dec. 21st at amazon. Right after my order they went out of stock.

Here is what the original Rev1 Ninja looks like. Scythe has came a long way! Obviously the Ninja 2-5 are more optimised for active cooing, Rev1 was passive spacing.. It still serves me today, it fits on all sorts of stuff if you are sneaky about it.

I'll be definitely buying their product come next build though as I'll be doing a fresh start.

Edit to add, review mentions Scythe ease of install, that's something that has not changed. Keep this in mind if you want to keep it for a long time or use it across sockets that may not be supported officially. It's very easy to mod. I used a noctua bracket kit for mine.

The 212 EVO is still hanging around? I can't believe it, especially for the price vs the others.

I have the Wraith Prism on my 2700X, but I'm not sure if I want to keep it, or move up in cooling some (for no other particular reason than I want to lower my temps).
 
Good cooler, too bad scythe excused itself from my country a few years past. I used to have a mugen 2. Best value cooler ever.

I'm still pretty shocked at how well the Reeven Ouranos performs when looking at these large coolers. After you guys did the review on the Ouranos I purchased 3 for my home use and they're just excellent coolers. Whatever Reeven did for that to happen, other companies should take note. I have one Ouranos in a system with a 8th gen 65w i7 6 core 12 thread 3.5GHz system that runs with no fan and will hit a max of 68-70 in Prime95 small fft testing. This Scythe looks neat at least.
 
are you sure about those results? because there is no way a CM 212 could outperforms the Deepcool Aio unless the deepcool was using low RPM, or the AIO had no pump, and the CM was using LM tim
 
800 rpm is pretty slow fan speed. wonder how well this would do with some higher speed fans

Where does it show the 212 wins anywhere against the one model? One of the Deepcool AIO's also failed IIRC. Read the review on them.

I just saw CM is putting out a new version of the 212, all black and one model comes with rgb fan of course.

Its nice to see the Ninja back on sale here in NA. The low noise is a plus but that price is not attractive.

literally in the results shows that the Deepcool reaches 111c if he includes a broken product in a review how thats a correct methodology? Now if thats a fully working then the result us wrong and needed to be re done because there no way the deepcool aio performs worse than the hyper 212
 
I would love to see the Thermalright Macho Rev. B included in the mix. It's normally for sale via Amazon at $50, keeps my 4770k at 29* C at idle in utter silence, and can handle over 200W of total head load without much air circulation (in a tiny Metis Plus mITX case). My only complaint is that it doesn't have much clearance for RAM with the fan on the normal side - in a normal-sized case I could have just switched the fan to the other side, but I ended up just taking the heatsinks off my GSkill Ripjaws X.

The graphs don't have the same coolers, making some comparisons hard. For example, it's interesting that the Noctua 14 single-fan maintains lower temperatures than this dual-fan Scythe. I suppose the trade-off is noise - but that Noctua isn't on the noise charts. It does reappear on the value chart, but there the dual-fan Noctuas are missing.

I'd also suggest, since you are helpfully highlighting the subject equipment graph bars, that you slot them in performance order rather than putting them at the top. It's easier to see them in perspective that way. [You've probably tried that and had folks ask for something else... this is just IMHO].
 
I switched from the 212 evo to Be Quiet just because it looks nice and the fan is silent. I looked at the scythe but it looked too heavy.
 
after making the change to closed loop water cooling, i dont think i could ever go back to air cooled. beside it being so much quieter, with all the heat being directly exited outside the case, inside the case is just soo much cooler overall, which my GPU really appreciates.
