For 3.5 drives it is generally a 6-32 x 1/4 or 6-32 UNC, and for 2.5 it is generally an M3 x 4mm.

See SFF-8301 and SFF-8201. For 3.5" drives max penetration is 3.5mm, and for 2.5" drives it's 2mm, 2.5mm, or 3mm, depending on hole position and drive thickness.

Many drives permit greater than this, at least for some holes. It's a good idea to check the data sheet for your drive.
