Should I pull the trigger? What has been your personal experience with it? I live in the Caribbean, so returns are always a PITA&wallet.

I got an OLD i7 860@4GHz with 16GB DDR3@2GHz and GTX970 which I plan to upgrade whenever PCIE5 hits the market. Till then, my Dell 2007FP IPS now has a 5mm thick grey column and yet still makes my Dell E248WFP colours look horrible, even after calibrating both of them with an X-RITE colour calibration tool. So I want to retire both or at the very least, limit the E248WFP text only/portrait stuff. The Sceptre at 200USD looks like a great deal for a cheap hold over to enjoy media and light gaming (Dota2/Borderlands) till I do a complete rebuild at which time it will become the second monitor or the kitchen TV.

A GTX 1080 still isn't bottlenecked by a 16x PCIE 2.0 slot, so don't bother to upgrade just for that reason. The reason that you should upgrade is to get a new CPU, which is likely the bottleneck in your system. If all you care about is getting a cheap 4k 60hz monitor, jump on it. The 4k 144hz g-sync monitors should be coming out later this month but will likely cost an arm and a leg (my guess is somewhere between $1k and $2K).

I upgraded 2.5 years ago from an i7 970 to a 6700k and it made a world of difference to the minimum frame rates. If you have the $ I would upgrade to a 7700k for about $550 (CPU, motherboard and 16GB RAM) or a 8700k for about $650 (CPU, motherboard and 16GB RAM).

I also should have mentioned I want Intel to sort out Meltdown or AMD to release Zen 2 but I total dig what you saying. Currently, though the only thing I can't do is game on the 24" while playing a video with MadVR+Potplayer on the20"; both become a complete slide show. My thoughts on upgrading might change with Borderlands 3.
