According to the rumor mill, Western Digital and Micron are interested in buying Sandisk.

Micron and Western Digital Corp are in talks with chipmaker Sandisk Corp (SNDK.O) about a possible acquisition, Bloomberg reported. Sandisk has hired a bank to explore a potential sale, Bloomberg reported, citing sources familiar with the matter.

I feel like this is the end of a growth cycle; when large companies with poor growth spend huge amounts of money to buy other large companies with mediocre growth, which rarely works but happens all the time. Look at SAB Miller and InBev; $100 billion? HP? Etc.

Hmm WD prob needs them more than Micron. It would give WD a quicker entry into SSD land. Then again it'll give a bigger presence for Big M to have more of their SSD drives in side the big box builders... HP and Lenovo have been using a lot of Sandisk SSD lately and less Micron & Samsung drives for their mobile systems.

Man, I though Sandisk was a pretty big company. I know several people using their SSD's (I've got 2) and their USB and SD cards are popular.

Micron definitely doesn't need it, as them and Intel hold a huge stake in the SSD market (through IMFT). But Western Digital could see the writing on the wall. They aren't out of the game any time soon, but they are certainly falling behind.

Sandisk ruined their reputation going too low with quality on their SD cards. Doubt I'll ever trust Sandisk again.

They went cheap. I had a 32GB Sandisk Extreme MicroSD Class 10/UHS1 card that couldn't even record high def video without the buffer overflowing on the DSLR. A Class 6 card, however, could.

they do have a lot of IP and they are one of the top flash makers ... If micron picked up Sandisk it would put Micron on par with Samsung in regards to Flash and Memory ... down side is Toshiba Corp would fight it tooth and nail for that deal not to happen...due to Sandisk and Toshiba share flash-memory plants with in Japan.
WD just had a big injection of cash from the Chinese Gov , one of the state Uni's bought up 3.8 billion in WD. So WD has some cash in hand ...

its better to buy them when they go bella up. kinda like OCZ when they were bought for 30 million.

Micron has a consumer presence through Crucial, but they don't really have much in the removable flash market for stuff like SD cards which is prolly their reason for being interested in purchasing Sandisk. The WD interest is pretty obvious. WD totally needs to get deeper into solid state memory before their revenue diminishes too much for the company to afford to make moves like a major acquisition that lets them enter newer markets. Whatever either way though.

knock off maybe? I think they been sold even in amazon (not saying anything specific about your card model or anything, just saying knockoff SDs can be a problem)

Fab capacity, maybe. I don't think that Sandisk's IP is compatible with the direction that Micron is going, but if Micron can get their hands on Sandisk's fabs on the cheap, the way that they did with Elpida, that might be a reason.

I think that Western Digital would be a better overall fit because without a flash-based storage solution, they're going to be in trouble soon.

Was going to suggest this, counterfeit cards are an issue through amazon.
