Samsung's Transparent Smart Window

Sold. That's awesome! I'm sure they have it protected against the high humidity of a kitchen. I hope it doesn't cost too much. I'm sure it will, being the first generation of this, but there will be imitators soon!

The only problem is people outside can see what is on your screen too...

That's *exactly* what I was about to post.

Seems interesting...until you realize that you are effectively posting your emails/bank account details/movies you are watching/whatever on the outside of your house.

LOL.

That is not the video I originally saw, but another from CES said that it is one way so no one can view what is on the window from the outside.

Beside that, I wonder how long it would last with the sun baking it all summer.
Plus it's not double/triple paned, so it doesn't meet energy codes.
Then you have the problem of fingerprints all over your window (a problem with all touch screens).

Think I'll pass, even without considerign how much it will cost.

Yes, I saw that one too, with the lady demoing it. You can't see inside - it's one way only.

He does say you can put it "on" your window. So I would guess that they expect it to be another layer added to an existing window.

As for fingerprints LensPen Sidekick has you covered there.

-first thought after checking clip, 'cool'.
-second thought was the privacy issue the poster mentioned in quote.
-third thought (taking the 2nd thought to its logical conclusion), not sure my neighbours would appreciate seeing my porn videos displayed on my window....

FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK!!!

I wrote a screenplay 3 1/2 years ago. Tried for it to be realistic speculative science fiction with a few twists.

One of the specific ideas I implemented into the story was all glass had the ability to become a display surface. Large windows in an apartment? Also your TV. Also mentioned was a way to dim the windows by rubbing your finger up or down the 'screen'...

And this fucking video does it all.

In 3 years I'm down to maybe 3 or 4 ideas in that story that HAVEN'T been made real yet.

It's not a replacement for a window. It's a transparent display made to hang in front of or on a window. Kind of asinine considering that it's made in a 42" widescreen form factor and I don't see many windows that are exactly that size (thereby making the "blinds" a complete waste). And I kind of doubt this will ever make it to market. It's more one of those whiz-bang things companies like Samsung make to keep their engineers from falling asleep from having to design yet another TV.

If this is an LCD... what happens when it gets dark out?

Will I need to light my windows from the outside?

It covers that in the video. It has lighting for that.

I've been talking about this for years, too. I was always thinking it'd be perfect in the car. HUD's with built in video for rear view, speed, GPS, etc..

want on car windshilds and every window and a see through phone screen.

Why? Need to break into a vault at the Kremlin?

I don't think i get the reference. I'm referring to the webcam using facetracking to approximate your heads position to re-orient a 3D cityscape model to simulate an actual window.

i bet my neighbor;) will get it just to rub it in my face.

and i also best that i'll be throwing a big rock just to piss him off

If this was mine, I'd create a sort of screensaver where on the onset it'd be clear glass, but when you touch it, it'll give out a static feedback with a bzzzt sound of sorts as if there's really no window there, it's a force field.

Like when Picard showed Lily in First Contact how force fields replaced windows.

Dammit, I just got done mopping up the drool from the superthin OLED panels...

And I'm morbidly curious about the power consumption on this thing.

Forget cars, I want this to be miniaturized and provided in glasses (or even contacts). So close to decent AR.

I don't think this idea will catch on.

It's neat, but far from practical, because you are forced to stand next to one window in the house.
totally inflexible.

it's like the old days where you had to stand next to the window to use your cell phone.

I'd rather have a plug in picture frame type computer that I can hang anywhere.

^^Agreed^^ I think this could happen with a camera and a flush mounted LCD.

The old days?! If you have AT&T service, you still have to stand next to a window to use your cellphone. :D
