Samsung SA850 on PLS - the first review has been published (preproduction unit)

Got a May 2012 build and it doesn't appear they've fixed the backlight problem. Mine has the same "v" bleed as others have posted on the bottom. If you push the edge frame along the bottom, the bleed does disappear.

Also has two bright spots on the bottom:

which is only visible in lighter colors - white, esp. Looks like it could have been pressure points on the panel. If you try to bend the frames outward by holding the left and right frames, then you can make the spots disappear, but they reappear once you let go.

I just dropped a wad of cash for this monitor.

It's going to be here on Monday. From this thread, it looks like this is a really good monitor if your backlight isn't bleeding everywhere.

Wish me luck on the monitor lottery!

With refference to this review I'm confused what revieweres on PRAD meant with the following:
Investigation of the LED backlight on the S27A850D requires interesting technology: the backlight glows almost continually at full luminance (regulator setting 100, red curve on the chart), but we also see overlaid timing, with an amplitude of about 8 percent. When the level is halved to the 140 cd/m² suitable for a workspace (yellow curve), the power consumption of the LEDs in particular is halved and the clocked share increases by more than 30 percent.

The clock rate is 180 Hz and the duty cycle is 63 percent. Despite the nominal agreement, these values should not be interpreted as they might be in cases of pure PWM control: in fact, even very sensitive users should only notice backlight flickering at the very lower end of the luminance regulator.

Does this mean that Samsung S27A850D uses Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) or not? The Viewsonic VP2770-LED uses the same PLS panel but doesn't use PWM at all as stated here. If the flicker caused by PWM makes more eye strain I would prefer Viewsonic instead.

Hi,

I have bought a new S27A850D. This monitor is incredible. My unit is from July 2012 and black bleed seems to be not an issue at all. What seems to be a issue is that on white screen i can spot several "dust, dead pixels?, scratches inside?" Anyone more having this problems? Should i return my monitor?

BTW, i notice this monitor has montion blur especially on movies full screen. Its particulary visible. Or maybe is IPS Glow. How much distance does IPS Glow diminish its effect?

The screen is to bright. My eyes hurt. I have brightness at 30%.

Full Screen HD is not good enough. Quality is bad... I guess 1440p video will not come in the short time... :(

30% is more then normal recommended lightning for normal use which is 120 cd/m². Try 20%.

I own the u2410 and I think that for the money, it's just not sharp enough. :(

In fact, for a lot less money my u2311 seems almost as good!

After a long search to replace them both, I am so excited to stumble across the S27A850D and the S24A850D - finally a screen with less anti-glare but not completely glossy either :D :D :D :D :D

I love my glossy screens but they aren't good for work in bright light (oh the days of the sony xblack screens on laptops - absolutely brilliant they were!)

So....

Before I order the S24A850D, is this still the monitor to get or is there a newer, better model that has succeeded it? Samsung's website seems a bit useless and there doesn't seem to be another samsung that has come after it....?

Many thanks in advance for your help :D

Hi,

I have bought a Samsung S27A850D October 2012 batch. It's a nearly perfect monitor. No dead pixels, almost no blacklight bleeding. Only a small on top right, but not that much. I am pretty happy with it...

Anyone has any tips on how to clean the monitor from fingertips and dust?

Also i dont know if is specific of this monitor or the the frequency. But when watching a 23.96fps movie on this monitor there is lots of drop frames, no matter what player i throw in. Maybe it's just because the monitor is big and becomes more noticeable but i find it irritating altough i am getting used with time...

I have a GTX 670 which handles really well on games with Ultra 1440p resolutions...

This monitor also have a really visible heavy motion blur on movies. I guess a 120Hz monitor would be a nearly perfect monitor.

Thanks

I just received a S24A850D built in November 2012 and the backlight bleeding is terrible (I'm sending the unit back to the dealer).
