Samsung S27A950D 120Hz

I've had quite a few PMs about this and I've been lazy so far so here are some shots of the screens.

This is my setup at university and due to severe desk restrictions I've had the side screens at differing angles.
The screens also look much better with natural light (strong lamp is the only lighting used below), and the camera whitebalance was slightly off. Nevertheless here are the pics (with promises to update them when in a week when I'm at home):

After returning my Asus for the halo issue, I'm seriously considering one of these. I'm more interested in 2d than 3d and this seems to be the best thing going right now in a 27 inch format?

I normally only buy VESA monitors but I think I could live without it and just get a small riser for the desk if I need a little more height.

i returned my vg278h and i get s27a950d..... now i am happy..... really...

Ya I'm ordering one right now. I"m also doing it online so I'm getting the no dead pixel coverage for piece of mind. I don't want another fiasco like I had trying to return that garbage Asus VG278H

im from italy and my monitor is made in Romania..... is simply perfect.... after my horror story with asus...

you live in usa?

all the s27a950d in usa are made in mexico.... and the quality control especially on dead pixel are bad....

here my calibration....

brightness:70
contrast:60
sharpness:60
hdmi black level normal
response time: fastest
color:normal
gamma: mode3

I'm in Canada so I'm sure it's a U.S. unit. Either way, it's luck of the draw sometimes. I paid the 30 bucks just not to deal with it should I get dead pixels. At least this way I know I'll get a perfect monitor hassle free.

Looking forward to this.

if you are lucky... you get the best 27" for gaming...

i talk after i tryed:

v236h
vg278h
w2363d
xl2410t
hn274h

Heh sounds like you've tried almost everyone out there! =)
I'm hoping it'll work out well for 2d gaming. *fingers crossed*

before talk about....

27" 1920*1080 = bullshit!

is better to try a 120hz monitor!

each person (including myself) who has tried the 120hz is not 'more back to 60hz
(i had 2560x1600 and 2560x1440 monitor)

Does the S23A700D and S23A950D share the same panel/screen? Is the picture/image quality the same? Are the differences only in appearance? If so, why does the 950D cost quite a bit more than the 700D?

panel have the same technology.... but on each model change connectivity.

my personal opinion is to get always monitor with DVI-D connection to get 120hz now with all videocard.

The 700D and 950D both have DVI-D connections but the 950D also has DisplayPort. So the only differences between the 700D and 950D is that the 950D has DisplayPort in addition to DVI-D plus the differences in appearance? No other difference? Picture/image quality will be exactly the same?

S27A950D = dvi+hdmi+dp

S23A950D = dvi+hdmi

S23A700D = dvi+hdmi

only these 2 model have dvi

Thanks.

Why would I want pay more and get the 950D over the 700D?

my friend have the s23a950d and the picture quality are equal to the s27a950d ;)

but i do not find any review of s23a700d :(
You said that the S23A700D and the S23A950D use the same panel/screen so should the picture quality between these two models be equal too?

Ok thanks.

By the way, I read on the previous page of this thread that you had the ASUS VG236H. How was the ASUS? How did it compare to your S27A950D?

Between the S23A950D and the VG236HE, which would you recommend?

I have not be able to find a clear cut answer to this but does the Samsung SA950D have any extreme color shifts when viewing at it straight on? I have tried purchasing other TN panels in the past and returned them all, I experienced this http://i.imgur.com/7P3K9.jpg (top of the screen darker orange and the bottom lighter orange, this affect was viewing straight on, was not backlight bleed) which is very noticeable even in games. I do not plan to use it for watching movies/TVs just games and internet, so I can live with viewing angel issues that are not straight on. Having 3D is just a bonus to me.

Since I care a lot about uniform color across the screen would I be better off with one of the following other 27" monitors:
Dell U2711
HP ZR2740W
Samsung SA850D

Side note I do not play competitive FPS games, so I can live with input lag/motion blur when I do play them.

When spending this kind of money on a TN panel I just want to make the best choice, or be better of spending a little extra on an IPS panel.

my setting:

magic angle group view
brightness:75
contrast:60
sharpness:60
response time: fastest
HDMI black level: normal
Color 54/54/54

Can this monitor do 120Hz on DVI DL connection? I don't see why not, but I need an 100% accurate answer. Thanks in advance! Sorry if this question was asked before!

Yes I'm looking at one right now. 2d/3d 120hz over DVI. It works over display port as well.

...which reminds me.

Mine arrived this morning. Colors are awesome. Minimal backlight bleed if any. Refresh and response is amazing. Definitely better than the Asus I recently had.

The one bummer is it came with 1 dead pixel in the upper right. It's in a spot where I wouldn't see it much, but I'm deciding if I should live with it or replace the unit considering the price I paid.

It's so hard to think about packing this thing up and sending it back though. Everything just looks so good!

Is this monitor pretty much the one to get if I'm in the market for 120hz 2D gaming via DVI-D? Is anything else on the immediate horizon that would be worth holding out for?

So what's the difference between the s27a950d and s27a750d aside from the latter being cheaper and better looking?

EDIT: Oh, I see the 750 has no DVI. What a pity.

Yeah the only differences is the SA950 has aluminum build construction for the base and the back of the monitor while the SA750 is plastic and also lacks DVI.

On the base of my 950D it says "9" series which is apparently their flagship line. I'm not sure if the 750 means "7" series or what that would translate into construction/component wise from Samsung.

Wondering if any one here could help me make a decision on which monitor to buy. Its between the S27A950D and S27A750D I mainly want the monitor for 2D 120hz gaming. Is there any major differences between the 2 other than the dvi dual link on the S27A950D ?
