Samsung S27A950D 120Hz

yep ive read this too. if you pull the 2 edid pins in the dvi cable it could work, i just need to do a little more reading.

but what about powerstrip software. i've just installed a trial and u can use it to create custom EDID driver files for the monitor! we could just call it an acer hn274h :p

ok what about this:
http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...=10110&cs_id=1011003&p_id=3048&seq=1&format=2

its called the dvi doctor. it a hardware edid emulator. from what i understand, you plug it into a monitor and it will remember the edid, then i plug in a different monitor and it will emulate the edid code and force it to the gpu.

from a nvidia thread:

Has anyone tried this or other method of changing the EDID so to read as a different 120hz 3D vision ready monitor? Maybe this trick would allow the s27a950 to use Nvidia 3D vision?

Seems to be a couple ways of changing the EDID, from using the dvi doctor to pulling 2 pins, or using software like Monitor Assist Manager. Do any of these tricks work?

Ok, so I got an S27A950D from Newegg and the box had clearly been opened before. The screen had finger prints on it, but the accessories looked new. It worked fine except it intermittently had flickering pixels running down the center of the screen. You have to look closely to notice it; it's a subtle phenomena and intermittent. I got a replacement and its box had also been opened before and it had exactly the same flickering pixel problem as the first one, and it had greasy finger prints on the screen as well. So I called Newegg again and talked to them for awhile. The CSR said she would let senior management know about the open-box monitors I received and offered a store credit refund. In opted for a third monitor instead. This third one arrived and had clearly not been opened before. I have had it for a week and have had no problems. No dead pixels. No flickering pixels. It's a keeper.
All three performed exactly the same in terms of crosstalk with the right eye being a bit worse than the left. Just set the Tridef 3D settings to 87% in front of the screen and the crosstalk becomes basically a non-issue. The only other differences I noticed in the monitors were the dead green pixels in the first one and the slightly worse backlight bleeding in the bottom right hand corner of the second one.
Now half way thru this adventure my dear daughter broke the 3G glasses. I tried the 3300GR glasses and the 3700CR glasses as replacements. Both did not work as well as the stock 3100GB glasses because they both made the image significantly dimmer than the stock glasses unless you tilt your head about 20 degrees to the right - I am not kidding!
Steer clear of anything but the stock glasses and make sure you don't receive an refurb monitor if you paid for a new one (BTW I don't think Newegg is at fault and they took good care of me).

BTW I still think this monitor is great IF you like glossy screens and you have an ATI video card.

can you see the flickering pixels on desktop backrounds or you have to play games for that?
i'm asking because i want to buy one from the store.

I had this problem too. I could see them on desktop background, log on menu from Windows, watching movies, ... Using a hdmi to connect my BD-player, I could see them on the start menu of my BD-player. I could see those pixels while I opened the screen's menu. That was my second monitor, the first one had a stuck pixel.

In a few weeks I'm going to try a third one.

Where can you adjust those settings? When I opened Tridef, I could only choose between 2 settings, depending on my video card ( SBS or frame sequential) . I've got an ati radeon hd 4890. Do you need a newer one, like 5xxx or 6xxx , to get more settings?

Any ATI card can do it. It's in the Tridef software; check out the help screen. There are several settings you can tweak during game play. IIRC you hit shift-Alt period, or shift-Alt comma to change the percentage of the image in front of the screen. Another thing you can change is the overall scene depth. Here is how to access the whole in-game menu:

Controls

To see/edit the list of hot keys available within TriDef 3D Ignition refer to Tools/Options in the Ignition interface. It is now also possible to configure a different set of hot keys for each game. Please refer to the game properties menu in the TriDef 3D Ignition interface

Within the game a number of settings can be modified using the on-screen-displays (OSD). By default the OSD is opened/closed using the Numpad-0 button (ensuring that Num Lock is on). The numpad arrow keys can be used to navigate and change settings within the OSD.

I only noticed the Flickering pixels on mine when I had a white window in the middle of the screen up like the Tridef game launcher. Resizing the window bigger and smaller continuously seemed to show the problem more clearly.

I was wondering, how well is the 2D to 3D Realtime Conversion? I understand it's not as good as 3D made content, but does it come pretty close, or not at all?

I only tried the realtime 2D to 3D conversion on my first one and I got a bad color shift. Whites became a light yellowish-brown and colors became desaturated in general. Maybe it was just my settings. In any case the 3D depth seemed to pretty shallow. Playing at 120hz in 2D seemed to me to be a preferable experience. And true 3D is way better than the realtime conversion; no color shift and colors are still nice and saturated, and as much 3D depth as you want since it is adjustable. You can't adjust the depth of the realtime 2D to 3D conversion.

I'm seriously considering this monitor however I can't decide if I should go with the 23" or the 27". I have a 24" at 1920x1200 resolution now, but would like a 120hz for FPS gaming. I'd imagine the picture would be sharper with the 23" at 1080 as opposed to the 27" at 1080. But if I got the 23" would I be kicking myself for not getting the 27"?

I got the 27" and I am glad I did. The large size is great for 3d immersion. Text is sharp. Jaggies are not bothersome in games as long as you have the horse power to do 4x or 8x anti-aliasing. One thing though, I heard pro FPS gamers prefer around 23 inches so they can see the whole screen without having to move their eyes much. So if you are into serious FPS gaming, you might do better with the 23".

Good to hear, what are you running it with nhalbot? I have a 5870 now but will be upgrading to the 7000series when they come out.

Maybe this trick would allow the s27a950 to use Nvidia 3D vision?

It depends what you want to do. If you just want to use this monitor, the included glasses but have frame sequential on nvidia, you can trick it into thinking the 3d vision emitter is connected using this software http://3dvision-blog.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=997&start=0. You have to guess at a few of the setup questions as the setup doesn't work properly, but theres 3 selections so just choose different ones till it lets you past. It works fine. Make sure it thinks the monitor connected is a generic CRT.

Somebody over at 3dvisionblog posted this:
"Last night I managed to use the Samsung S27A950 with 3D Vision.
All you have to do is install the usb emitter emulator.(I don't know if I can post the link)
Then select standard CRT as your monitor in the stereoscopic 3D tab and select Frame Sequential from the monitor menu."

I have a pair of 6970's, but alas Crossfire is not supported for 3D yet, so I have to disable Crossfire when I play in 3D. I asked ATI when they would support it and they would only say they are working on it. They need a more people in their driver development group IMO. Nvidia spanks ATI in the pace of their driver development.

If anyone has 3 of these monitors in Eyefinity and wants to sell one of the extra pairs of 3D glasses, PM me. My 5 year old broke mine beyond repair.

Ok, I finally figured out how to get replacement glasses. Don't go by the model number on the glasses themselves (SSG-3100GB), it is wrong. The right number is on a sticker on the glasses box: SSG-M3150GB. These are the only glasses that will work properly with these monitors. Believe me, I have tried 3 different glasses models made for Samsung TV's (including the SSG-3100GB) and they all kinda work, but not really. You have to tilt your head 45 degrees to the left for them to work properly - no kidding. If you don't tilt your head you lose a lot of brightness and contrast. Seems to be a problem relating to how the polarization angle of the glasses is aligned relative to the polarization angle of the monitor LCD. AFAIK you can *only* get the SSG-M3150GB directly from Samsungparts.com.

Does anyone know of any reviews for the S27A750D? It looks like the 27" version of the 750 is showing up at random places on the net, and I was looking for information as to the screen and how it compares to the 950D's gloss.

I would like to know this as well. I haven't been able to find jack diddly. :)

I can pretty much gaurentee that the S750 uses the same panel as the S950.

Yeah I agree. I'm just looking at the VESA compliance. I'm thinking of doing a surround 3d setup, but I want a screen larger than 24".

NCX, I know you returned the 950 but I think read somewhere that you have been doing more 3d gaming with the asus screen, right? Did you use nvidia when you tested the 3d on the 950?

I bought the Asus about a week after I returned the Samsung, so no Nvidia testing.

So after about a week of serious research, well, as serious as I can get, I've ordered this guy.

I've been using a Dell 2407 since it went out and still think it's a great monitor, but I just added a 2nd HD 6870 in CrossFireX and wanted a 120Hz monitor in the hope of getting rid of screen tearing without resorting to god damn v-sync. I don't have 3D vision so obviously, I couldn't possibly care less about 3D.

Coming from a 24" 16:10, getting a 23" or even a 24" 1080p would have felt like a bit of a downgrade so I wanted a 27". For gaming, that is.

Also, I kinda dig them glossy screens. Reflections won't be a problem in my man cave.

That being said, I'll be dropping from a 270µm dot pitch to 311 so I hope I'm not disappointed by the PQ.

Will someone hold my hand?

LOL!
Don't worry, you'll like the monitor.

Well I buckled under pressure and have ordered the S27A750D from Newegg. I'll write some feedback here when I receive it on Thursday. The scariest part of buying this monitor was realizing that since only the DisplayPort plug can do 120hz I am basically limiting myself to ATI for a few years to come.

Saywha?

Unless I'm wrong, which never happens, it can do 120Hz with the provided DVI-D (Dual Link) cable.

All of the S models can do true 120hz over DP and Dual Link DVI.

There are aftermarket Nvidia cards with Displayport so you wouldn't necessarily be forced to stick with AMD.

Just upgraded to the S27A950D and all I can say is "Wow!" It's amazing for gaming. I'll never go back to 60hz again. Thanks for this thread, it helped a lot in making my decision and glad I went with the 27" version.

I called in sick! Haha it was worth it, wife was pissed though. I been gaming all day on it.

Ok I decided to pick this up, Got it and have it set up now. I have tried the Nvidia 3D setup, set to crt, 120hz and the 3d vision will now work. Gonna have to play around with this to get the 3D vision to work.
