Samsung S27A950D 120Hz

nhtalbot, was the ghosting in one eye the same when watching 3D movies, 2D to 3D and gaming or just in one type?

It's the same when I use the monitor's 2D to 3D conversion. I don't have any way to test 3D movies atm.

I am playing Dragon Age II and it looks fantastic! This monitor has so much potential, if I can just get a good one.

For those thinking of buying one, you may want to wait until they work out the bugs. But this monitor is worth waiting for.

BTW Tridef does not support crossfire yet. Major bummer there, but hopefully they will add support soon. Another reason to hold off for a bit.

None of those work on the screen. However 2d -> 3d works in turning the 2d vid into a 3d one.

If you are watching a side by side movie you should be able to select that mode via the monitor buttons and it will then turn it into frame sequential 3D.

Worked for me. There was a fair bit of ghosting in both eyes imo. Dragon Age II looks better. Hard to say if the right eye was was worse than the left on that video.

Ok, I have sorted it out. It's the top 15% to 20% of the screen that has the bad ghosting. Anything below that is fine except for the very bottom. Changing viewing angle does not help. I wonder why the ghosting is worse at the top?

Well mine has a similar right eye cross talk issue (ghosting like) problem. I still have not tried movies but it's present at any point in the screen as far as I can tell regardless of whether i have 2d-3d conversion mode running or native frame sequential. But the right I crosstalk for me is only about twice as bright as the left eye crosstalk. And it’s been a more noticeable issue for me in 2d to 3d conversion when looking at game menus. But I have not tried 2d -3d converse mode in a while since I figure out setting response time to normal generally make 3d better as well as getting the iZ3D software working. But it not really a problem for me you can't see it at all when your eyes are focused correctly for 3d. ( this will be expanded a bit latter in this post). At some point I need to try to contact Samsung and see if I can get a hold of a service manual for this monitor or talk to a tec about this to see why this might be happening. But it’s not the glasses on my monitor. I have 4 pairs right now. I have only tried out 3 of them and they all exhibit this extra crosstalk for the right eye. But this has not been a make it or brake issue for me on this monitor.

I not sure if your issue being more pronounce with top 10-15% of the screen is normal or not I don’t have an effect like that on mine. But as a general rule 3d effect do not work well near the edge of the screen. This will be even worse if your focusing directly at the edge of the screen since your point of focus is not surrounded by proper focusing queue to get your eyes to focus in at the correct focal distance (not the plane of the screen) or the 3d information will be discontinues any way making it impossible to get a 3d effect out of that part of the image. The interesting thing to keep in mind is that as long as you eyes are focused away form the plain of the screen any crosstalk effect you see will be invisible unless you looking for them become the crosstalk image is out of focus and you will be unable to see it clearly at all so you brain will remove or not be able to perceive those image errors ( it may still contribute some to eye strain but that will take a lot of work to prove or disprove). I should only be an issue if the cross talk is extremely pronounced. (try setting response time to normal in 2D mode. All cross talk effect for me are way more pronounced for me with any other setting enabled.)

As for the black dots I have not observed anything like that on my monitor.

Also as a note for those of you that considering the 23 in vs the 27 in models that plan to use 3D. I go with the 27 in even if the back lighting will be a little weaker and the dot pitch will be a little bit larger. Because size does matter to some existent for your brain to process the 3d effect. The smaller the 3d image the more problematic the edge of the screen will be for 3d or the more difficult it will be for your eyes to forces since your peripheral vision will have a better chance of interfering with you ability to focus your eyes at the correct distance from the screen.

What about dead/stuck pixels? Bought a S27a950D last week and found a green stuck pixel in the centre of the screen. Got my money back and waiting for a new one (I liked that screen). Was it just bad luck or does it happen too often?

mine has a dead pixel near the center

i hardly notice it however, but I may take it up with the retailer later

i would rather let others who want this monitor at my local store to get one before i take two.

I found an interesting way to test crosstalk - http://www.avforums.com/forums/3d-t...h-crosstalk-ghosting-has-your-3d-tv-test.html . It's a side by side video that shows an image for your left eye at the top half of the screen and an image for your right eye at the bottom. It should give a perfectly black area on the other half.

When I do this test, the left eye is pretty much perfect. The right eye result is strange, as I can see some of the left eye area towards the outside of my vision, but wherever I directly look has no crosstalk. It's almost as if the glasses are only blocking a much smaller area on this eye. Do other people find the same?

I checked the cross talk on mine again this morning with Dragon Age. The cross talk is definitely worse at the top 20% of the screen. I tested it in a dark room so I could not really see the bezel, so I am sure it's not because my eyes are seeing the bezel and losing the 3d effect.

Anyone else have worse cross talk in the top 20% of the screen?

Not sure if this breaks forum rules, but NewEgg has a code reducing the price of this monitor through 7/28.

common when the shutter glasses do open/close too late/early

I'm debating if I should buy now or later. Kind of like with Benq 3d monitor think the later manufactured units will be better than the early adopter units? Kind of looking at cross talk as being the desiding factor.

I just want this LCD for the bad ass 2D... don't care about 3D... but, am going to wait for the Price is Right!

quick question guys.
i currently own the acer gd245hq and a gtx 580 graphics card.
i want a bigger monitor.
i am NOT interested in 3d whatsoever. i only care about 2d 120hz as i mostly play online fps games.
is this monitor worth for me?
i will never switch from nvidia to amd.
how would this monitor compare to my current one speedwise?
it seems that i'll either buy ths s27a950d or the acer hn274h. what is your advice?
thanks a lot!

Would I be correct in assuming these monitors are going to come down a bit from how they are currently priced on Newegg once more stores have them to sell?

I have a few questions here...

So I bought the monitor, should show up tomorrow. Does it come with a dual link DVI cable? I am getting mixed info.

Also, I have an Radeon 6970. Would I be better off using the mini display port ?

I noticed the new preview driver (11.8) says: Enables AMD HD3D technology support on DisplayPort panels, such as Samsung 750 and 950 series 3D displays

Do I want that? Sorry this is all new to me :p

I couldn't find a mini display port to display port on amazon but admittedly I didn't spend a ton of time.

I appreciate any feedback. Thanks!

You can get 10% off on either the samsung or the ACER from newegg through the end of today. They seem to have gotton over the shortage of 27" panels. All the pricing of 3D/120 HZ panels should be coming down soon, and then there is Thanksgiving/Black Friday coming soon.. Quality wise the Samsung has it over the ACER as far as construction goes. When ASUS gets in there will be a scramble for marketshare(hopefully-the ASUS will be compatible with both Nvidia and AMD))

The monitor comes with a heavy duty dual link DVI cable. Just use that. I am using the 11.5b hotfix drivers and they work great with the exception of no support for crossfire (I have two 6970's). Since you just have one card, just stick with the 11.5b drivers and the dual link DVI cable and life will be good.

Using some of the settings advice in NCX's review I was able to basically eliminate cross-talk in Dragon Age II and Dirt2. The key is to move the percentage of the image in front of the screen to somewhere in the 85% to 90% range. I love how much control they give you over the 3D settings. I read somewhere that Nvidia's 3d Vision doesn't give you as much control so you can't optimize is as much for a particular game.

Thanks for the advice. I actually have trifire, gut good advice nonetheless. Is crossfire support something we can hope for in the future?

I got the monitor setup and briefly demoed blackops and l4d2, I was actually pretty impressed. It didn't work until I disabled crossfire, but once I did it looked good. I couldn't aim at all.

I got the monitor for the 120hz for FPS shooters, but the 3d is fun to try.

You can turn on a special cross-hair sight that is generated by the Tridef software. It's just a red dot, but it should work well enough. You can change the size of the dot. You could try the 11.8 preview drivers and see if crossfire works now.

anyone buy a S23A750? i cant find it anywhere as well, but i was wondering if the new design works or not.

If you are on vista 11.5b hot fix does not work it won’t even install correctly and if you force it you have to use last known good configuration to get back to you old one( you can probably also command line fix it but that a pain). If it enables frame sequential then yes you get a full quality 3d experiences. But if the new driver does a better job of enabling HD3D at 120 Hz it will defiantly improve support a crossed TriDef and iZ3D and if we’re lucky it might provide a boost in performance or help with low frame rate issues. But without an updated drivers neither iZ3D or TriDef can use HD3D without an HDMI cable and it could enable the monitor to automatically enter 3D mode when a DP cable is used when necessarily (no more adjusting the displays settings). iZ3D can manage to get HD3D like support running without full HD3D support though if you using a new enough driver. I will try to see if there a performance change on my end but if there only a small frame rate boost I won’t be able to notice it reliably I haven’t picked out anything as a solid benchmark types of program. But with the iZ3D implementation (iZ3D shutter ) it achieving close to the full theoretical speed any way without proper HD3D support. iZ3D almost completely error free on a HD6970 on current drivers.

As far as were to find mini DP cables or adapters… I not sure who carries them I got mine form a local computer shop in my area but there not that common. It looks like Newegg has a few cables though you may want to check local shops that advertise a large selection of cables as well if you have any where you live. If have not noticed any sort of quality difference between duel DVI and PD yet but you may also want to use DP any way if you want to connect 3 monitors to you card at the same time.

If you’re GPU XFX they will supposedly send you an adapter in the mail if you request it from support and standard DP cables are much easy to find. But I was too impatient to give that a try.

Well it turns out the 11.8 preview drivers are also windows 7 only at this time so I can't test anything for this driver at this time.

I've got a problem with the s27a950D. It's my second try. The first monitor had a stuck pixel. Now I found something else that seems to be wrong. I've got some flickering pixels in a vertical line (top to bottom) in the centre of the screen and also in the right corner, where the menu can be found. I don't know why it happens, I'm using DVI-D, connected to pc (videocard is Radeon 4890) and hdmi to BD-player. In both situations I can find those flickering pixels. Using the first monitor I didn't see these problems. I guess I will bring it back to the shop. But don't know if i should get a third one? Am I the only one with those kind of problems?

I've got 2 s27a950d's ATM and they both have the flickering pixels in the middle of the screen. It only happens sometimes and it's pretty hard to see. I'm have dual 6980's, win 7 64 bit, 11.5b drivers.
Anyone one else this problem? I only see it against a white background. It seems to happens more often after I have been gaming in 3d for awhile.

My monitor only had a misbehaved pixel on the far left on the edge of the screen dead center that was stuck white for the first day or so it never happened again. One also appear in the upper left corner about one week latter but when away after a few days never to return as well. Maybe the screen just needs little bit of time to burn in? Or maybe my drives were misbehaving in some sort of ridicules fashion. Either way my monitor has not had any pixel issue since.

Maybe your gpus are getting a bit hot and you have a memory issue? Or maybe it’s a driver instability problem. Is there a way to switch which one the primary adapter? Are both monitors connected to the same GPU. If you able to install 11.8 previews does that fix it?

Another thought are you using Side by Side. Maybe there some sort of error when splitting and stretching the frames that then amplified with cross talk or something strange like that? What your response time setting when it happens?

I think mine only had 1 dead pixel and during the calibration process I went through a bunch of full screen colors including whites and did not witness any flickering.

I have the Asus VG236H+Nvidia 3D now. Tri Def offers a ton more customization VS the 3D wheel with Nvidia 3D vision. L4D2 with Tri Def was way better despite running @ half the res and had a far more pronounced 3D effect VS nividia 3D. I was able to eleminate CT with Tri-Def after adjustment, while with Nvidia 3D there is always some CT, the plus side is that it runs @ full res.

For some reason FRAPS won't show up during some games with Nvidia 3D, but it always did with Tri-Def. Nvidia 3D shows the 3D rating for each game upon launch and lists the problems which is helpful.

I didn't realize how much more immersive games are in 3D, it really makes up for the 23" size IMO, so those thinking they have to have the 27" I would consider going with the 23", might have less bleeding.

My initial reaction to this monitor, the S23a950d was kind of: meh.

It felt like I gave up the great picture on my HP 2475w for a TN panel that was slightly more responsive.

But, now that I've had it for 2 days, I can certainly feel a substantial difference. I mostly just play blackops these days online. I don't mean to unzip my e-member, but I'm pretty good. Right at the top of nearly any game I'm in. Now, with the monitor, I feel like I'm cheating sometimes. At times it feels like everyone else is moving in slow motion and I've sped up. It's really crazy. The biggest difference for me is aiming is much more responsive. It's the type of thing where if I hadn't experienced 120hz I'd of never known I was missing anything, but now that I have I think it'd be hard to go back. It also might be that there is less input lag on this monitor vs. the other one. It's probably worth noting I am able to consistently maintain 120 fps. I put my max fps at 125.

The 3d is way better than I expected. I've demoed Mass Effect 2, L4D2, and Blackops. All 3 were very cool. I could see myself using it for single player games and being very involved.

On the negative side-- I can't seem to get a good calibration on it. Using DisplayEyes Pro and an EyeOne LT to calibrate it to 120 cmd resulted in a theoretically great calibration. Delta E's were all under 1 on the profile validation... but it just looks off. I have the HP IPS panel and what the software is telling me is 6500k on the Samsung isn't the same 6500k I'm seeing on the HP. It's way too blue on the Samsung. In fact, Cool 2 was the closest to 6500k and that just doesn't seem right. It looks too blue. I don't know if it's something to do with the glossy screen that is throwing it off or what. Using Samsung's natural color pro profile looks a lot more accurate than the custom one. I will need to look more into it.

On mine the Normal settings was very close to 6500k, while Warm was around 5500k. I have used a bunch of Samsungs and Normal is always the closest to 6500k and Gamma mode 1 usually gives a low gamma of 1.8-2.0 resulting in washed out colors. Make sure you re-calibrate your colorimeter before profiling and unplug-plug it into your PC, other wise you may see huge errors.

I have the same issue, it's fixed by powercycling, changing the refresh rate, changing the resolution, or unplug/replug the video cable. I have no idea if I should sent mine in or not.

My first two had this flicker pixels problem. So far I have not seen it on the third one, but I have only used it for an hour. I'll report back after more usage.

gu guys, i've bought it and it arrived yesterday

i have:
- an AMD HD 5870 graphics card, connected via DL-DVI with the monitor
- latest drivers from websites (AMD, Samsung, Tridef)

1080p @ 120Hz works fine and looks great.

but the trouble is: i cannot launch a game in the frame sequential 3D mode... I tried three games: BFBC2, Mafia 2 demo, Metro 2033. all launched via that Synchmaster 3D game launcher. BFBC2 says i have to upgrade my graphics drivers, the other two say "3D is currently disabled, please connect to a 3D compatible display".

the side-by-side mode works, but looks awful. What do i do wrong? i also tried some old drivers like those on CD and/or catalyst 11.5. Thanks!

kind regards,
Kyfe

p.s. side question - are there people who are able to watch a BD3D with a HD5xxx graphics card?

edit: solved. i had to install the 11.8 amd driver preview version, not the usual 11.7 which is actually the latest driver. http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/Catalyst118DriverPreview.aspx
