How about some good news from Samsung for a change? The company has announced that it will invest more than a billion dollars to boost production of system chips at its plant in Austin, Texas by the end of June 2017.

Samsung Electronics Co Ltd said on Tuesday it planned to invest more than $1 billion by the end of June 2017 to boost production of system chips at its Austin, Texas, facilities in the United States to meet growing demand. The South Korean firm, the world's second-largest chipmaker behind Intel Corp (INTC.O), said in a statement its investment would boost output of chips for mobile and other electronics devices from its existing facilities in the city.

Would love to see Samsung enter the desktop CPU arena. We desperately need more competition in this space.

I never realized Intel is the largest chip manufacturer. How is that measured?

They should invest money in manufacturing stable lithium ion batteries.

Didn't Samsung Stole 14nm FinFET from TSMC and yet still manufacturing crappier version of it?

I wouldn't be looking forward to it personally.

They are also the most profitable by quite a large margin. Have been since around early 90's or so.

They need to bring a fab into the interior of America. Austin is too damn hot and too damn crowded. DFW is about as good as it gets for now. Otherwise you got California, Colorodo (crowded and pricey) and New Mexico (New Mexico).

Guess they wanted to give their hand at another thing that can catch fire. Intel can help them with that if they can't figure out how to make a chipset that will burn up with no effort, they have that down good.

  10. Nope. But it would be cool if one was built there.
