Samsung Galaxy S5 Watch Thread

An S5 GPE would be cool. But will Samsung and Google release one this year ? And if so, when ? I'd bet on it not coming out, until after Google I/O 2014 in June, and ship with Android 4.5

But at that point, I'd just wait a couple months more for the Note 4.

I'd say this: if the Google Play Edition program continues at all, there will be a GS5 variant. It's the one model everyone would ask for.

things are heating up. Should get a leaked picture soon.
Man Samsung is keeping a tight lid on this!

Only a week left until the real deal. I have a feeling that the reaction to the GS5 will be similar to that for its predecessor: a welcome upgrade, but really an evolutionary upgrade. Here's hoping that Samsung's "back to basics" claim means a leaner interface with genuinely useful features. If the company keeps on the gimmicks uber alles path it set with the GS4, Apple would be very happy.

Everyone knows that Samsung can release the same GS4 but with a Snapdragon 800 instead, call it a GS5, and they'll still be #1 in the Android world. It's called mass marketing success.

...and I would buy one!

I mean there isn't much bad to say against the S4. 2 people in my house upgraded from iPhones to the S4. They were sick of iOS and the S4 is excellent hardware.

For me, I would buy an S4 today if the S5 wasn't looming. It is great. I am starting to see the S4 camera limitations, but still, overall I love it.

So, iow, they could do the exact same thing that Apple has done with every singe iPhone revision. But instead, Samsung chooses to implement real differences to actually separate their successors from their predecessors. :p

Oh c'mon, really? :p

We have to get over fanboyish myths that iPhones are only iterative designs while Android is somehow a pure font of originality. Yes, Apple's resistance to bigger screens (until this year, quite possibly) and adding features solely for their own sake has kept it from pushing limits as far as others, but check the history -- there's a lot of stuff that changed dramatically between generations, and some of it was either a first or the first implementation that actually caught on with the public.

- iPhone 3G: major redesign that added 3G and GPS; first major OEM-run mobile app store.
- iPhone 4: major redesign, first Retina-class display, FaceTime (first video chat that's both built-in and high quality), iMovie (a phone-based movie editor you actually wanted to use)
- iPhone 4S: natural language voice commands (pre-dating Google Now by several months)
- iPhone 5: major redesign with bigger screen and LTE, first instance of the Lightning connector (proprietary, yes, but it's handy)
- iPhone 5s: first 64-bit phone, Touch ID (first mobile fingerprint sensor that truly works well)

This isn't to knock the Galaxy S5 if it's an evolution rather than a revolution, but we have to get over the notion that only our preferred platform is "allowed" to be the truly innovative one. Apple, Google, Microsoft, Samsung and others all regularly test the limits. I also think it's important to distinguish between features that advance real-world usage and those that simply sound good on a spec sheet. The Moto X's Active Display and touchless voice search matter a lot; the GS4's above-the-glass gestures don't, because they're rarely useful and don't work well. Samsung is at its most forward-thinking in hardware.

Fingerprint reader button

Since Apple did it... Samsung would surely "innovate" it...

I actually hope this rumor isn't true (and there isn't hard evidence, so it might not be).

If it is, it suggests that Samsung still sees "copy Apple" as a core part of its business strategy. And that might not be all of it, since there's signs that the TouchWiz UI has conveniently gone flat. Samsung makes good phones, but it's only justifying Apple's lawsuits if it follows the iPhone so closely.

Big thing I noticed with apple products.. When a newer model came out and a software update was pushed, the slower ones started hesitating alot.. Multiple folks and myself noticed this.. I mean seriously, when you can out tap or type on the phone faster than it can display it while it hangs it just gets stilly and way obvious what they are doing... I didn't fall for the trick long though..

I've heard this too. You're definitely not the only one. The battery life seemed to instnantly decrease slightly too. Go Apple!

hilarious. gold, even.

adding OS and other software features demand more hardware resources? color me surprised.

For me the biggest factors are - will TW be improved, and will it have unlocked boot loader and custom rom friendly. The hardware in all Galaxy phones is great, that's a given. They could also increase the signal reception and volume.

Oh yeah, there's no question that the concept of a front-facing fingerprint reader on a mobile device isn't new. The point is that Samsung would only be doing it because Apple is doing it (see also: S Voice, Wallet...).

Vlingo was running on Android/Samsung much longer before Siri on iPhone except that it was an add-on app whereas S Voice is Vlingo but bundled and integrated. Plus, Siri is useless like Apple maps and since it's not multi-platform. It's like Apple acquiring SnappyCam app to get burst mode which has been done by others before.

Apple Passport is nothing since it's irrelevant to almost 90% of the world that don't use iOS and also since it doesn't have NFC. It's just a derivative of electronic commerce and payment anyway so BFD.

I have to admit though that Siri is good as a sex chat for lonely creepers.

Siri and Apple Maps useless. Thanks for more good laughs.

It's just like the first car. It was actually made in Europe, but most people associate it with Ford because he made it popular and usable for the general population. You completely miss the point, as do many of the other Apple haters. No one, unless the really stupid ones, say Apple invented all of their technologies, the argument is that they made it popular. Look at smartphones before and after the iPhone and tell me they didn't all start getting really similar to it.

Yes, Vlingo was on Samsung phones before the GS3 (I know, I used the GS2). However, the company reskinned it and integrated it on an OS level expressly to copy Apple. Vlingo's interface was noticeably different in 2011 versus its S Voice incarnation from 2012.

Also, if Siri is "useless" (which is demonstrably false), then S Voice is comic relief. It has a considerably more limited syntax and a voice that grates on the ears. If you're going to choose a voice system that you think might best Siri, choose Google's voice search. S Voice isn't even in the same ballpark as what Apple and Google offer.

Passbook (not Passport, please get your facts straight) isn't that huge, I agree... so why did Samsung go out of its way to copy it so blatantly?

You do realize you're digging your hole ever deeper, right? It's hilarious to watch you make easily defeated generalizations, prove that you're not speaking from real-world experience, and resort to immature characterizations because you can't offer intelligent debate. Come back when you can argue like an adult.

Is it all structural purposes for the hella big bezels up top and bottom of phones these days?

I would take a lower spec'ed phone with little to no bezel on the top and bottom.

I'd prefer aesthetics really....

And of all the options soon coming out, I think its a Nokia 1520 for me....these rounds of phones are quite disappointing TBH....

It's a combination of technical requirements with the occasional ergonomic concern. You usually have to stuff in a camera, speaker and a proximity sensor in there. That's easier with big phones, but not everyone does it (the G2 has a very thin top bezel, but while the larger Note 3 actually has a thicker display). Some companies leave those in on purpose to make the phone easier to grip in landscape mode, I think.

Bezel to screen ratio is like body fat ratio. Some are terribly bloated considering they're so tiny you can easily cup two in one hand. Bezel helps if it's a larger two-handed device where you need space to pinch hold with one hand.

I can't wait for tomorrow! I was going to hold off another 6-12 months to upgrade my S4, but I don't think that's going to happen now. I'm using Sprint, so most likely the next phone will be a triband phone. My area is slated to get the 800mhz band in the upcoming months, so I'm going to upgrade my phone and possible my wife's Note 2 with this. If I'm not impressed with it, I may finally try an Iphone 6 if the screen is at least 4.7". I kind of wished the S5 screen was 4.7", but it's actually going to be 5.2" from most rumors I've seen. I'm not too crazy about that, but I can live with it if it is.

All true/good points.....just sucks really :(

Just want something that is crazy aesthetic, about 5mm thin, metal all around, and has a screen time of 9+ hours....don't care of the OS as long as its a stable build/can provide me with e-mail/interwebz/music/phone.

Siri is useless? seriously? You know out of every voice integration, Siri is the best out of everything else right? S Voice on the other hand does even shittier than Google Now, and by a very long margin too. Apple map on the other hand is actually getting A LOT better. The search might not be as good as Google map on specific thing, but it's very comparable overall.

For SnappyCam comment, you are outright clueless. SnappyCam guy who wrote everything in low level to get that fast camera shot is just blasting. It runs so well that even on an older device, it was able to do a full shot 20/sec. S4 on the other hand the burst shot is horrendous in comparison. This guy's JPEG compression algorithm is just insane.

Also about the Passbook. Have you ever been to airport or like Starbucks? Have you seen how many people are using it? Compare to carrier locked down NFC payment, which I have not yet seen anyone who used it anywhere. If Passbook is as bad as you made it sound, Samsung would NOT have COPY IT ENTIRELY...........

I'm not disagreeing with you here, but I will say that Google Now is very comparable to Siri in the things that most people would use it for, voice to text, quick search/maps. Its just that the fidelity isn't as nice as Siri's.

NFC isn't very good for general use right now and I doubt it will ever be but for some people it is a requirement. Its sad to see NFC being kicked to the curb so bad, its almost like Miracast.

I'd put Google Now towards the top of the list since the predictive nature of it works really well without having to constantly query the phone, calendar, traffic, weather, etc. I set an appointment and can totally blank out about it and it'll notify me in advance when to leave and what route to take to get there on time. In addition, the female voice sounds the most natural and pleasant whereas Samsung's HD voice is a little pornish. Not that that's a bad thing but awkward in public. Siri I find rather useless since on more than one occasion a voice search for a local landmark didn't take geolocation into account so it suggested something a few counties off along with the voice sounding like a female version of Tim Cook. Combine Samsung's HD voice with Siri would make a good kinky creepy sex chat.

You're screwed if you do and screwed if you don't andriod old phones don't get updates and people complain, i bet if they got updates they would notice them being slower.

This is the Galaxy S5
http://bgr.com/2014/02/24/galaxy-s5-picutres-leak/

What a disappointment :rolleyes:

I liked how the S4 had a bigger screen, but was actually smaller in overall device size and thinner / lighter. But the S5 looks to be much large than S4, which was borderline to big for me already.

At this point may as well go for a Note 3, if they are so close in physical size.

And design wise, this S5 is butt ugly, just another S3 / S4 plastic design. I thought Samsung was going for new cool design, to compete with the HTC One, or iPhone 5S metal designs.

Will there ever be a high end device in the 4.7" / 4.8" screen size range ? I liked the Galaxy Nexus size best, if I want to go bigger, I'd just get a Note 3.

there are rumors of Samsung using better plastic on this one and making it ip67 without going "active"

But seriously, that phone is more phablet than phone...

..which makes it better than the S4 for me.
I initially wanted the Note 3 but just couldn't commit to the size. The S5 looks like the perfect bump in size and specs for me.

Yep. The Note 3 was just a little too big for my hands, but the S5 might be just right.

GSM Arena is saying it has a heart rate monitor (next to the flash on the back).

http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_s5_live_pictures_and_specs_leak-news-7917.php

If the new camera is decent (not just MOAR MP!!!) and the battery life is good, the S5 is very tempting to me.

I don't like the the look (the back texture is really horrible), but I never really cared about that in a phone.

Samsung needs to come out with a new high end, smaller sized smartphone.

The S series getting larger every new model is getting out of hand already, they need to stop growing each year, it has almost reached original Note 1 size.

S1 = 4" screen
S2 = 4.3" / 4.5"
S3 = 4.8"
S4 = 5"
S5 = 5.25"
Note 1 = 5.3" screen

Will the S6 next year, be the same size as the Note 2 with a 5.5" screen ?

While I am pretty sure this is my next phone I was hoping this would be more, well, different.
Is Samsung going to foist this incremental device down eager upgraders throats and then drop the real "next" big deal at a later date?
They are not going to let Apple upstage them with the iPhone 6. However, the iPhone 6 leaks make that look just like iPad mini-micro. with no real innovation whatsoever.

I am buying this in protest. It will meet or exceed my needs for 2 years, and that is enough.

What is the next real innovation in Smartphones? Or are we done here?

If the leaked pictures are real the S5 hardware capabilities, performance and battery life are like a Note 3 minus Pen-S but with a smaller Note 2 shape. Things to keep an eye on where it can be better than Note 3 is camera sensor/low light.
