A one thousand dollar fine for a fatal accident? I guess they'll be thinking twice about not reporting faulty equipment sooner.

$1,000?!?! For someones death? Hopefully they'll have to pay wayyyyyy more than that after the lawsuit which I would hope is already in the works.

You'll be smart to remember that South Korea is not the United States, and that slinging lawsuits is not seen as a way of life over there as it is here.

While this may be true this is certainly not a case of "slinging lawsuits" for this could NOT be a more legit case. Read and think about what the story is about and what happened before you post. You think this guys family is just going to be all "Oh well shit happens!"?

That would be a bad way to go. Hydrogen Flouride does amazingly nasty things to human flesh.

Infringe on someone's troll patent in the US: $250,000,000 fine.
Pirate a song in the US: You're the Antichrist.
Kill someone in South Korea: A cheap funeral costs 6x more than the fine.

Does anyone else have a problem with this?

So there was a gas leak, they called in a contractor to fix it, but did not (publicly) report the leak. The contractor who died did not die due to fault of Samsung, but to the dangers of his job.

A nominal fine for not doing proper paperwork seems normal. The death has nothing to do with the fine.

The fine is for not reporting the leak; that they presumably knew about because they hired a guy to come in and fix the leak. The fine isn't because the guy died, just that they didn't report to regulatory agencies until the guy went to the hospital. Maybe they'll have another fine for the death, plus a wrongful death lawsuit.

Correct. The contractor was there to fix it, he wasn't just some random guy who took an accidental shower in extremely corrosive acid.

Can't stop thinking about a ceramic bathtub and hydrofluoric acid eating through it and a body tossed in.

Exactly. There are more than likely some kind of routine safely requirements that this employee is suppose to take to avoid death - such as shutting down the flow of gas before beginning repairs, using a ventilator/special breathing aparatus, maybe a gas-mask and protective-wear. Chemists are suppose to wear eye-goggles when performing experiments just in case of accidental splashing of dangerous chemicals -- but in reality on the job -- few people wear goggles 100% of the time.

The employee probably took a risk to try to save time and the risk did not pay off. It is a shame the employee died on the job presumably trying to provide for his family and in that regards was a somewhat honorable death and I hope he's remember fondly by his family.

As someone living in South Korea that has a good understanding of the mindset over here, Samsung will probably (definitely) compensate the family of the victim for their loss privately without the need for expensive lawsuits and fines.

Hf is nasty, goes straight through your skin not causing much damage until it gets to your bones where it will eat straight through any calcium in its path causing immense pain. At least from what all the safety warnings say, haven't had any on me myself. Speaking of hf, get to use some tomorrow in the lab to remove sod and sio2 on a si wafer.

I won't go too much further off topic, but AVGN interviewed Lloyd Kaufman recently. Quite a good interview too.
