The fingerprint scanners on future Galaxy phones may soon be indistinguishable, as new filings suggest Samsung has made headway in integrating the technology directly into the screen. The patent points toward a sensor that encompasses the entire display, which is expected to operate quicker than competing derivatives thanks to a dedicated processor.
To make sure there’s no lag, Samsung plans to add a second low-end processor to control just the fingerprint scanner. Samsung’s fingerprint scanner will use the screen to illuminate the finger using a special “High Brightness Mode,” taking three scans that differ in terms of brightness. The information gathered will be combined for a more reliable authentication. This technique would also make it possible to scan a dirty finger.
