S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2: Heart of Chernobyl

Finally making some progress in the game. Got my diamond exoskeleton so at least I can carry and run farther. Got some upgrades done and hit Pripyat now. Also getting some new guns. I think I got about 8 missions left and I am now 100% on ward path. I don’t know much of what is going on and finally I am feeling a bit OP. Also got some LMG and Gauss both of which I haven’t tried yet.

Game had so much potential if they fixed some of the bugs, fixed a bit the economy and added a proper sprint function. Glad I am not playing on console because without any mods I can see this being an absolute chore to play.

I am looking forward to just finishing this finally and get back to Doom.

I don't think the remastered original games are very interesting. Anomaly/Gamma is much better. I didn't buy the latest Doom game either. 2016 lost the dark freaky art design and the latest one toned down the gore. Doom could be one of the most delightfully evil and freaky game atmospheres of all time but they keep trying to appeal to a mass audience and it actually makes the game sell worse. Also they should get Mick Gordan back if they want to make a serious soundtrack or do something totally out of left field.

6 month (and a few days) anniversary since the game was released...in his initial review Skill Up liked the game but stated that it would take around 1 year to get it in good condition with patches. bug fixes, performance improvements etc....looks like he was right

GAMMA continues to be an impressive game, getting farther along in it than when I tired it last time. The underground labs are pretty freaking scary.

From what I remember skill up played a version of the game that didn't represent the day 1 version of the game. I do agree that it will take a year or more if you want to wait until they have upgraded the lighting and added DLC content. I think the game is in pretty good shape at the moment and the only things missing are mutant parts and night vision goggles which are both available through mods.

Got the point of no return. I thought there were missions left but apparently not. Am actually glad that I be finishing this game lol. Is the ending sequence really longish?

Finished it. Got the ward ending and read the rest. I think I got the best possible ending since all seem to be utter shit.

7.5/10. Going to keep it to try on my 9950X3D and then uninstall.

Patch 1.42 is live.

https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/1643320/view/525344448442270465?l=english
  • Balance changes: lowered armor piercing multiplier for 9x18 ammo.
  • Fixed an issue where camera movement sensitivity was too low on low framerate when using gamepads as input devices.
  • Fixed an issue where mutants were shaking and twitching erratically when investigating a threat.
  • Fixed an issue where consumable items were duplicated in quick slots, and appeared as available, despite not being present in Player's inventory.
  • Fixed an issue where radiocall with Strelok was not triggered and next objective didn't trigger if Player hadn't killed all Wardens at TCS location during Dangerous Liaisons mission.
  • Fixed an issue where Scar could get stuck playing confused animation after killing him during bossfight in The Last Step mission.
  • Fixed an issue where Sanya Ocheret could start a combat with stalkers in his squad during The Boundary mission.
  • Fixed an issue where doors to Duga's underground tunnel and Location D could be locked on user saves during Once More Unto The Breach mission.

Not sure really what did it here with this 1.42, but somehow, someway, this mother f'er is now running on my friggin relic. Don't want to Jinx it, but settings on medium mostly, 1440p. not too shabby.
Didn't go through patch release notes, but i can now go up and down a latter with the keys i have.

Crazy times.

For the most part, Stalker 2 is running pretty constant, no really issues there. The main concern which many have stated is still some buggy NPC behavior. Also finding the night/day cycle is borked. Not really tracking it, but it feels about 75% running at night cycle. And of course, no night vision yet.

Hopefully 1.5 fixes some of the lingering issues. Hearing June release, but pretty quiet on the news front.

I'd just lay up and at least start out at daytime. The 75% running around in the dark just gets old as fuck pretty quickly. I installed a mod to extend the cycles.

Finally installed the game on my newly acquired 4090
I am a huge fan of Stalker. The first installments blew me away how gorgerous and versatile the open world was, but ran like shit on my rig. I believe I ran it on the 8800GT.
Well, anyway my widescreen monitor is capped at 60hz, so I guess there is no point running the frame regen enabled? Should I also turn off the vertical sync?

Any advice how to start the game so I don't make mistakes later on?

4090 and 60hz? You need a new monitor pronto sir.

At only 60Hz you are going to want to use Vsync or it is going to be tearing city... lol

Another rather long patch list, which isn't a bad thing, I guess. Didn't see anything about the nigh/day cycle.

Either way this huge patch is welcome.

Is that not literally the fun of the game?? My favorite part of a new game is going in blind as fuck.

Finally

Proper A Life

Nature is healing

I think I can begin my first playthrough now...

7 months post-release and they finally fixed A-Life?...isn't that one of the most important features of the game?...they should have delayed the release until it was working correctly...online reviewer Skill Up was spot on when he said in his initial review that the game was good and held a lot of potential going forward but needed at least 1 year of patches/fixes before the game was in good enough shape to fully recommend

Every time someone says they fixed A-Life, I later find out it's pure copium. I'll believe it when I see it for myself.

To be fair, proper A-Life could mean anything. Given the history of the originals and the myriad of mods, that standard could be anything.

I played through the game, whatever state it was, and still enjoyed it. It's not like the A-Life they gave us ruined the overall experience. Far from it.

4090 and 60hz? You need a new monitor pronto sir.

I guess so, but I am just stuck with it for now. My 4070 wasn't cutting at 3840x1600 which is still below the 4K. Always had to tweak down the settings. So finally now everything is smooth.

Yeah, I've been running with VRR off for a long time now with this OLED display; might as well not support it at this point; gamma flickering with any sort of FPS variation makes it unusable. Thankfully, a strong GPU compensates.

Tried to boot it up (haven't played in awhile) and it crashes. Probably some mod needs to be updated for 1.5. I did update everything that currently had updates, but no dice.

1.5 is running fine for me. 3 hours last night no crashes. I was able to loot a dog and warthog so that was cool.

On another note, ran into the dreaded Chimera for the first time. The advise on this has to be run, since on one playthrough I emptied my entire ammo supply on it with no luck. Suprised the balance on this thing hasn't been fixed.

Does the game implement different ammo types? In GAMMA if you are shooting a chimera with non-hollow point ammo from a low caliber weapon that would indeed be the result

Regular, flat, expansive and armor piercing.

old article but the developers talked about why the A-Life feature is broken...

"aggressive optimization prior to launch completely broke the game’s AI system, and it will require a lot of resources to fix...without time to fix the issues before release day, the game has launched with a key component in a completely ruined state"

https://www.videogamer.com/news/stalker-2-devs-broken-a-life-system-aggressive-optimisation/
No video or IGN alternative, unfortunately. During an interview after a screening of the "making of" movie for the game at BAFTA developers from GSC Game World pretty much confirm that A-Life 2.0 is causing performance issues and why they needed to shrink the sphere of detection where the AI would become active. That also caused a lot of bugs.

https://www.ign.com/articles/stalke...s-removed-from-the-games-description-on-steam

“This system to work properly requires a much larger area for spawn NPCs, and it requires much more memory resources," Ievgen says in English, which isn't his first language. "We were fighting with optimization. To optimize, you have a lot of things that need your resources, and you try to cut things from different directions to properly optimize the game well.

“But to make it work we had to optimize some things, and they make A-Life work in many situations not as it should. Also, we created some bugs not long ago before release with NPCs spawning in the air and dropping back to the bottom. They should actually spawn in the terrain. Why it happened, I don’t know! And also we had some bugs with AI behavior.

“So, all these things connected make it look like it's very broken and not working. But we are now continuing working on the optimization part to bring more resources for the A-Life system, to increase the range where A-Life is actually visualized.

“There are NPCs outside of the range of the player and they are in offline mode. And when the player reaches some distance, they are going to online mode and they pop back up. The distance is dictated by our optimization range, where we stream the real world and not real world with all the collisions. It was tough work, and because of these optimization problems and bugs, it's become broken.”
“For now we committed to players to make it work and it can be done from directions both optimizing, giving more resources to A-Life, fixing bugs, making it work properly, and then putting more efforts to make it more advanced,” Ievgen says.

I started this last night

Even DLSS Quality at 4k is seemingly enough to become CPU bound at times on a 9950x3d

Ouch
