S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2: Heart of Chernobyl

Not really liking that. Unless the story choice matter in a good, impactful way that doesn't feel forced. In almost every game I've played with branching missions/story, it ends up being unnecessarily forcing the player into a lame this content or that content selection, or just making us replay 85% of the same thing to play the last 15% of the content. There is little chance I'll spend that much time redoing the same things for a few hours of extra content when I can play a new game or two. Add in post release story DLC which will probably take a year or more to come out. Typically I see locked story content as a lame way to increase hour time as a marketing point

in one of the recent interviews with the developer they stated that 1 playthrough will only get you 60% of the story...2 playthroughs 90% and 3 playthroughs to get the full 100% completion...60% seems kinda low for the first playthrough...seems like 2 playthroughs at a minimum is required...

We hear that all the time with many games, but the other 40% of story content is something like an altered end game cut scene and other minor differences. Typically it is more like replaying 85% of the game, and getting 15% new content. More often then not it is better to just youtube the different sections. Personally I despise making people replay a whole game just to access a bit of content. It almost always is just an annoying way to hit a marketing bullet point like claiming the game takes 100 hours to complete. Now if the missions, story and whatnot is written in such a way that there is real worthwhile difference that is fine. But I've yet to see any game do this, and open world style games are the worst offenders with the least amount of changes between alternate play throughs.

Detroit Become Human is one of the few games where I felt the chapter and story ending possibilities differed enough to be worthwhile of a replay, but that is a linear story based game. Even then, most of the content was similar but just slightly altered.

Well, hopefully it’s good enough that we’ll be excited for that 3rd playthrough.

I'm glad they're doing English with accents. Option for Ukrainian is always nice though.

I'm pretty sure the original game had English with accents by default in English speaking territories and the option to use Ukrainian with subtitles was also available. It's pretty much the same as the original from 07 in that regard. The mod community has made Ukrainian voice work the standard but I don't think that is how the original game was.

Not everything was translated to English in the English version of the original game. Ambient voices, in particular. There is a mod to add subtitles to it.

I actually liked that mix. It would be nice if they had the option in the menu:

Full English
English Main Characters Only
Ukrainian

I've played anomaly and gamma for so long I'll probably switch to Ukraine in the end but I will let the English play on my first run through.

too bad hardware RT won't be available at launch...hopefully it won't take 1+ year to implement (like Elden Ring, Atomic Heart, Doom Eternal etc)

STALKER 2 Is Getting Hardware RT, Cross-Platform Mods and Multiplayer Post-Launch

Three major features will be introduced to STALKER 2 after launch...the game will launch with software ray tracing which is likely referring to Unreal Engine 5's Lumen, which uses a software ray tracing technique that can optionally be augmented by hardware

The other two features coming with post-launch updates are cross-platform mods and multiplayer...

Disappointing. Though I feel with all the ray tracing they may implement my PC would struggle anyways. Maybe by the time the DLC comes out I'll have a better GPU (RTX 5070?) for it.

which GPU do you currently have?

Looks good although enemies look like bullet sponges. Don't seem to react much to being shot. With the game being so close to release it would be a shame if the actual shooting gameplay was a letdown.

STALKER's hardcore reputation didn't prepare me for how surprisingly basic STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl is

It speaks to an impression I'm getting of the STALKER 2 experience after a few hours wandering the Zone: STALKER 2 is difficult, but it's surprisingly straightforward...once you know how anomalies work, avoiding them is so simple that I stopped worrying about them...I had a few close scrapes with bandits that shouldn't have gone my way, but the game lets you spam medkits fast enough that I felt unkillable as long as I had some on-hand

Same for STALKER 2's light survival systems: There's a stamina gauge that slowed me down when it got low, but I always had plenty of snacks on hand to quickly replenish it...there are MilSim elements here, like loading/unloading magazines to loot extra ammo, but this is not a game where you need to craft splints for a broken leg or find sources of fresh water...though I kinda wish it was, because I got a little bored by hour two...

So happy for the devs at this time. Let's support this game and make it profitable to develop these types of games on the pc. Old school, open world shooter with survival mechanics, some scary and desolate atmosphere with a sprinkle of suspenseful story. Let's go Ukraine!!!!!

Now back to some Doom 64: Unseen Evil........

Hm...I've been seeing references to A-Life 2.0 for STALKER 2...I've gotten to the point of not really minding or caring too much about graphics recently. Far too many current gen/next-gen games look and play too similarly that they start to blend together with the same lighting, textures, and models. If the A-Life 2.0 system really does mean that characters do things differently than other games, then I'm very interested. What's the point of having a powerful PC if all you get is some extra blades of grass on the ground or slightly more stuble on a character's face or a few more objects in the environment.

I DREAMED of the A-Life simulation system in the original STALKER and was disappointed when it finally came out and the NPCs didn't do almost any of the things that they had been touted as being able to do so. Every time I hear about advanced AI in games, it rarely ever does the things you imagine they do. I still remember when Oblivion touted it's 'Radiant AI' system when it was first being shown and had all these cool stories of Vampires taking over the world...then the game came out and none of that stuff was happening at all. The AI/A-Life system is a make or break for the game for me...

Also, I truly hope that STALKER 2 will have actual stealth capability with light and sound and the ability to sneak around in the dark...no pre-orders ever, will wait for reviews and a sale no matter what.
