Finally going build a new rig, and I am stuck on which of these two cpu i want to go with. i know the 2600x is more for gaming, but I was thinking, would getting the 1700 and overclocking it with a hyper 212 give me much more bang for the buck?

I would go with a used 1st generation Ryzen since they still have AMD warranty and you can get them for cheap.

If you hunt around on the for sale forum or ebay, you can pick up a 1700 for $180-200 (cheaper than 2600X).

Then overclock that sucker.

the question is do you need the 8 cores ? If not get the 2600x better single threaded performance better performance overall and you don't have to bother overclocking it

I was in the same boat (1700 vx 2600x) but don't want to play the segfault lottery. I'm assuming Ryzen 3/5/7 2xxx has this fixed, right?

From what I understand that was fixed on all 1000 series produced after a certain date but I don't recall what the date was.

I'd still probably get the 2600x over the 1700 but it depends on the application and $165 is a great deal.

With Microcenter nearby, my choices are $199-$30 = $169 for 1700 and hopefully I don't have to spend my time RMA'ing if I get old stock, or $229-$50=$179...

I think it's a no-brainer to go for the 2600x actually. Now I just need to score some DDR4...

Passmark says the 2600x beats the 1700 even in multithreading...

It looks like that benchmark is at stock which isn't really fair to the 1700 since it has a lot more overclocking headroom but I certainly can't argue against the rest of your logic.

Memory was a tough decision, I ended up going with a 3600 mhz cl 15 Trident kit. It's not on any of the QVL lists but it's supposed to be highly binned low latency B die that many people have had success with on Ryzen and it was only $10 more than the 3200/14 Flare X kit that's often recommended.

@OP: I'm sure that you will enjoy your new system.

I don't really oveclock these days, as I'm partial to 100% stability.
