Dang!

"Russian search engine Rambler.ru claims full ownership of NGINX code.

Moscow police executed the raid after last week the Rambler Group filed a copyright violation against NGINX Inc., claiming full ownership of the NGINX web server code. The Rambler Group is the parent company of rambler.ru, one of Russia's biggest search engines and internet portals."

All your base are belong to us.

Doing some reading, that Russian Rambler company no one has ever heard of is apparently claiming that one of the founders of Nginx Inc. Igor Sysoev developed Nginx while employed by them as a system administrator.

Under their employment agreement, any work originated by their employers is their property.

I have no idea if their claim is valid or not, but either way it is a huge dick move to take this action 15 years later once other investments and developments have been made. Nginx Inc. (a Silicon Valley based company that leads the development of the open source software and makes money selling support contracts) was recently sold to another American company for $670 million.

I agree that work developed while working with an employer (except where permission exists andnitbis done outside of business hours) should belong to the employer in question, but IMHO there needs to be some sort of statuate of limitations to prevent this kind of selective bullshit where they allow other parties to continue development for over a decade and then sue.

If they have a problem with it, they should have a year to make their claims or STFU.

At this point any American company that thinks it's wise to do business in Russia or China is deluded. This is exactly the kind of bullshit that people who scream socialism are so afraid of but are afraid to call it communism. There is a difference.

It's not necessarily either Socialism or Communism.

It's a matter of corruption and the rule of law.

It is theoretically possible for a communist system to not be corrupt, and exhibit rule of law, but the world hasn't seen it yet.

Don't get me wrong. Communism, even with the above, would be an unfortunate choice, and worse than a market based economy in almost every way, but just because a communist system is in use doesn't mean it has to be corrupt, and leaders who are above the law.

True,

However - being a member of the Communist Party or like Xi - "President for life" - there is almost nothing to stop the corruption as long as they don't step on the wrong toes.
ie. their own party members. There are no statistics of course, but it is more likely these forms of "government" breed corruption at a much higher rate than a more open democratic form - that has checks and balances built in.

Communist Scenario - in the best interest of the state, we now "Nationalize" Company X.

DONE.

Any system is corruptible, including our own (obviously), but some are easier to corrupt than others. I should have been a little clearer in that regard. I'm just sick of people conflating socialist programs like SS, police/fire depts, schools, etc. (i.e. socialism) with autocratic/communist states like Russia and China. -end rant-

Are you paid to post this propaganda, or just feeling a bit nationalistic today? This reads like soapbox material

Communism looks great on paper in theory, but in reality it will never work well because of human nature. China lost their battle against corruption within their government.

See my comment right above your post. And no, I am not a paid agent of (fill in the boogeyman of your choice).

I work for F5 Networks in Seattle (the company which recently purchased NGINX). I'm curious how this will play out!

...but just because a communist system is in use doesn't mean it has to be corrupt...

Did you read what you typed before you pressed the Post Reply button? All forms of marxism are fascist ploys to steal and consolidate power every time without exception and regardless of what BS label is being used to describe it.

Fair enough but not an excuse for the non-sense that I quoted.

Which part did you presume to be non-sense? The part about American companies (could be any company based outside the nations mentioned) being foolish to do business in countries that have no respect for individuals or the companies at which they work? Or the second part?
