About three years ago, Putin signed a law that requires signed a law on data storage compelling tech companies doing business there that handle Russian citizen personal user data, actually store that data inside of Russia's borders. Facebook is one of the companies not doing this and Russian representatives are now signaling that Facebook has had enough time to comply and will be possibly blocked in Russia should it continue to flaunt the law. Guess this is payback for rolling over on them for running those political ads.


MOSCOW (AP) — In its latest attempt to wrest control of the Internet, Russia's communications agency on Tuesday threatened to block access to Facebook if the company refuses to store its data locally.

Not sure whats worse, that or an internet that caters to the lowest common denominator (China for example).

With that said, any company that wants to do business within a certain country should probably have to comply with the rules of those localities, regardless if they're a B&M store or a social media company. It's how it works when foreign companies do business in the US.


edit: This is why some people were rightfully apprehensive of the US/Obama admin giving away control of ICANN

Thanks! And you're absolutely right, I'm aware of that, because the actual content of the ads hasn't been released. So someone presupposing that they somehow supported Hillary goes against all the current evidence we've seen thus far.

See, this is one of the issues with now days. Its easy to just say that you know what they were, even when you don't. Multiple countries are playing with "cyber weapons" and tools of international propaganda with no fear of reprisal. The FSB is just more aggressive than most organisations, they've also been caught multiple times over the last decade. These online tools are real weapons though, and they can have very real and very far reaching effects.

The "you can turn the internet off" people are fools, information is real and it can't ever be destroyed. Whether it's used to liberate or oppress, whether for the best of intentions or the worst, these are real weapons with real consequences.

They've always been there. Just look at his Cabinet/advisor makeup -- chock-full of former KGB/GRU/USSR Armed Forces siloviki (securocrats).
Putin not only plays the role of autocratic ruler, he also plays the role of moderator between the two major siloviki factions amongst his Cabinet/advisors.
You want to see who has the real levers of power in Russia? Ignore the oligarchs, they are now second-tier at best (Putin made examples of those oligarchs who thought they would be more than businessmen, as per Khodorkovsky and others). Focus on the siloviki (and how Putin plays them both in order to maximize his powers/leverage, and prevent them from uniting against him).

That "report"? A big bag of nothing! "High confidence" is government speak for "we don't want to be associated with this should this be wrong yet we still want our funding so we are adding our name to whatever". It was nothing more than a desperate attempt at connecting dots and failing miserably.
 
step back and look at things without the anti-Russian hysteria for a while, as to why would Russia to this.

1. Google had refused to give emails to American LEA of emails stored overseas. (final decision still running through the court system whether they will be forced to , legally or by negotiations). No clear idea of what Microsoft, Yahoo, and the other major players had been doing with regards to this. And neither on the Fortune 500 companies with regards to email.

2.So far no major public reports nor public policy on cases with regards to cloud storage ( considering how phones and OS now push for cloud storage, we can hear this very soon)

3. Just how closely are American tech companies working with LEA to access information. The level of cooperation is deliberately issued in an ambiguous manner. From encryption to records. Public can hope for the best or for the worst, based on the language in issued statements.

Meanwhile Ebay and LinkedIn had already, or has validated plans to host servers in Russia.

Food for thought: how much cooperation would WeChat ( TencentChina) , LINE (NAVER-South Korea), VIBER (Rakuten-Japan), VK (VK-Russia) give when working with American LEA. What does Latin America (drugs, guns, human trafficking) , South America ( same issues) , Middle East ( same issues + terrorism) use?

So if they stop selling ads to Russian companies does that mean they get to keep their web presence?
 
Data localization requirements aren't a new thing. Many countries require foreign companies (including USA companies) operating within their borders to keep their citizeb's personal data also within their borders. The EU has this as well. Think about it this way, if Equifax or Experian said we can run servers cheaper in China with all of your data on it, would you want / allow them to? Russians and many foreign countries don't want their citizens' data stored abroad (which in their case is in the USA).

Why? It's done every day, from the prez on down. And it's accepted. Donny boy has set a new, low standard for what can be spoken as fact and what can not. It should be pretty easy, to just consider what you read or hear as 'just their opinion' until you research the material yourself. After all, no matter how good you think your source is, the person questioning it can just call it all 'fake news' and consider that his final judgement on whether it's true or not. I write something, someone demands, 'PROVE IT!' I supply sources, and then they just say it's still not true because it's all fake news. Which is why I no longer respond to people's requests for sources. Because it won't matter if I can back up my opinion or not. What we read here is simply someone's opinion. When we really want to be sure, we have to check it out, ourselves.

We have it one way or another. Post reference to a media news source that contains anything referring to a political move in a positive or negative becomes either supporting that legislation or whatever, providing support against it. Only the degree of which makes it either bashing or triumphantly supporting it with fanfare, or just casually mentioning whether you like it or not, in discussion.

That's a joke, right? Anything in the data centers here that can be accessed by hackers within the U.S. borders, is available to anyone on the planet for the right price. Or do you think that there are no foreign agents on our soil? Besides, all it would really take, is compromising someone with a corporate account somewhere, one cop (to look up your legal history), or even just one bribe to a person at those date centers to get whatever info you want. It's all there for a the right $$$$$.
The only security we have, is the good will of the corporations that collect our data. Which, of course, is available to anyone, as long as they are willing to pay for it. Capitalism has always been in effect, whether the prevailing government is monarchy, communist, socialist, etc.. He who has the gold can make his own rules, because nearly everyone has their price. Just look at congress. Consider how many have supported legislation which goes against their constituents' best interests.
