Requiring bloggers to register with the government? What could possibly go wrong?

Russia: the home of shirtless autocrats, vodka and a love of free speech rivaled by only China. The Kremlin is taking another step to squash people speaking their mind online. After building out an infrastructure that allows the government to more easily block sites it finds objectionable, now it's building a registry of bloggers.

They just outed the VK boss (russian facebook pretty much) because he never enforced restrictions of what people could talk about, so the truth of what was coming from Ukraine and more was discussed on VK and yeaaaaahhhh that former boss isn't going to make it out of the country alive and if he does he needs to look out for men with umbrellas and all that.

US is on its way.....well the rest of the world is on its way to shitsville pretty soon.

Things are not changing for the better in Russia these days. This and the more serious issues in the Ukraine, it almost seems like the old way of thinking is coming back.

I really hate to see it. They made SO much progress over the last 20 years.

was coming here to post "in before hating on usa although unrelated to the article" but I am too late

I think the US needs to do this too. There are too many extremists like libertarians and rednecks abusing the Internet to share their crazy views with others like them. Even worse, there are intelligent people who are evil that are doing things like manipulating those same easily victimized anti-government groups into supporting crime through seemingly legitimate organizations like the NRA or through by getting them to advocate the use of bitcoins.

Not sure if serious.

The US/EU has NGO's posing as dissidents/bloggers in Russia trying to push different western agendas.. Russia is now cracking down on these "foreign agents" So I feel there is a bigger picture here then what is portrayed.

It sounds like you're still drunk from the night before.

That's true for any nation. Welcome to our little blue/green Earth.

I think you've got a hell of an idea there. Perhaps we could extend this "protective ledger" to people with other harmful opinions that cannot be tolerated, like gay marriage opponents and climate change skeptics. Their views are too dangerous to be allowed to be considered openly. We can't take the chance that others might agree with them.

They turned their back on progress when they decided to pick leaders based on Bravado.

Once upon a time I think we would have helped the guy get out, now in the name of good relations we'll probably drone his ass as a favor to Putin in hopes he'll be nicer back to us.

Head of Russia's facebook is an NGO and it wasn't found out until now? Believe that? Really?

That's so silly. I mean, what, you think they want Stalin to come back or some-oh...

An opinion survey commissioned by the Carnegie Endowment has revealed Stalin has remained widely admired in Russia and other ex-Soviet nations despite his repressions.

...well, then.

Ok, let's start with YOU.

Damn, this made me spit out my coffee...

I'd be completely happy with registering the blog I pretend to write with the US government. Besides not being a libertarian or a redneck, I have it on pretty good authority that my personal views are teh kewlz with Uncle Sam. :D

As both a redneck and accused Libertarian, I sure hope that you are being sarcastic in both this post and your previous post. I would also like to quote Rand Paul, “I don’t want to be associated with those people, but I also don’t want to limit their speech in any way in the sense that we tolerate boorish and uncivilized behavior because that’s one of the things freedom requires.” If we cannot have a free and open exchange of information, especially with people whom we do not agree, we will find ourselves in the very situations many of our ancestors came to this country to get away from.

I do not think that anyone is actually in favor of the recent actions of the Russian government with respect to Ukraine outside of a select few oligarchs and their puppet politicians. What boggles my mind is that if Putin continues down this path, he will not only undo the last few decades of progress made in Russian society, he will likely destroy their economy once again. The kind of socialism that developed in Russia was tried and failed. Bringing it back in a renewed fashion by further limiting people's individual liberties will not make it work this time. Why repeat the process unless you are insane?

You're right!
Freedom of speech should only be authorized by Our Lord and Savior Barack Obama and the Holy Trinity of Madonna Hillary and Harry Reid.
Anyone who disagrees with this blessed trio must be blocked from all contact with the intelligent and progressive America we must be.

Who said they just found out?!? They knew about them if you've been keeping up with current events. They are just now doing a tit for tat with US/EU and squeezing these agents is in their best interest nowadays.

Scratch a progress and you will find a fascist underneath.

We are on our way to something similar, this year the Democrats in Congress were trying to strip bloggers of press protections.

I dunno or even care about political parties. Who even pays attention to that stuff? I think it's a lot less important what this or that someone is and it's more important if they stop and look at problems without putting them into the perspective of some dumb, limited party-based set of requirements. I guess it's simpler for people to just go, "Oh I'm a <insert party thingey> and that means I have to think this is good and that is bad." That's gotta be the worst thing about people in the US because it polarizes them into two groups with opposing ideals that hurts discussion about awesome new things like banning pickup trucks or those awful Monster energy drinks and Google searches.

How are you letting Creepy drag you into such a conversation?!

And P.S., Russia sucks. On the one hand, I'd love for the economy to keep tanking and have the problem take care of itself. On the other, if their economy tanks that breeds desperation, and a desperate Russia isn't a good thing. If it isn't one fucking thing it's another. :(

Although I don't agree with restrictions on free speech from either party, I am not convinced that bloggers are deserving of the enhanced level of free speech granted the "press" (protection of sources, etc) ... some blogs, the Gawker family, seem to want to hide illegal activities (corporate espionage, etc) under the auspices of being "press" ... I think there should be a higher bar for a blog to qualify for the full press protections (otherwise they can operate just fine with the protections granted to individuals) ;)

The upside of Russia getting wonky again is it would increase the need for a bigger military industrial complex in the USA (which IS good for our economy) ... we have kind of been foundering since the end of the Cold War ... a return to the Cold War mentality might actually be good for us and them

I have to call BS that it is good for our economy. One sector of our economy, perhaps. Meanwhile, infrastructure across the land continues to crumble. And a bloated military crowds it's way into every political conversation. Which is why many of the founders were against a standing army in the first place, because of the distorting effects it has on democracy.

I'm not advocating going back to no standing armies, but we have a long, long, long way to go before that even gets close to being a concern.

Or we return to the reliance on our nuclear deterrent (which allowed us to maintain a smaller military) ... and nuclear weapons require LOTS of technology and R&D, so nuclear weapons are good for our economy (as long as we aren't forced to use them) ;)

I'm good with that. Long range missiles, nukes and missile defense. Let's actually let our 2 oceans and 2 borders with allies, y'know, actually count for something.

Well, I don't dispute the rational behind the Founder's concerns on this matter. But I would simply point out that the point, is moot. Warfare has gotten too complex and requires too much training to ever think that you can go without a standing army. We just can't do it, it takes years now for soldiers to become actually proficient at their jobs so it takes to long to increase effective troop levels if you wait for war to happen before you begin. For any Military that depends on technology as a force multiplier a standing Army is realistically a requirement. The size and scope of that Army is determined largely by that of your enemies. Even more so when one begins reducing things like Nuclear Weapons stockpiles. The ugly stick might be ugly, but nobody ever wants to get hit with it.

Or we return to the reliance on our nuclear deterrent (which allowed us to maintain a smaller military) .

Ummm, that wasn't the reality K, the reality was that a Nuclear deterrent only really deterred the use of other WMDs, no Nucs, Biological or Chemical weapons fun allowed. So that just put us right back onto square one because for awhile we believed what you said would work. But all the USSR did was keep building up it's conventional capability. Reagan accepted this fact and signed off on massive conventional arms programs, refitted and recommissioned Battleships, Tomahawk Cruise Missiles, B-1 Bombers, Stealth Fighters and Bombers(B-2), M-1 Abrams Tanks, Bradley Fighting Vehicles, FIST Vehicles, new Artillery, Apache Gunships, Blackhawk Helicopters, a modernized and technologically superior Military in every measurable way and still backed by Nucs and don't forget Star Wars.

At a time when the USSR was suffering defeat in Afghanistan the US Military had become a so completely overpowering that even those stubborn Russian bastards just had to give up. It was too plain for anyone to see, they no longer stood a chance of taking anything in Europe or anywhere else for that matter. They were bankrupt, destitute, and so the only sane course left to them was to dissolve the USSR and their massive and useless Military.

So all nuclear parity did was create a situation where superiority must revert to strength in conventional arms. You can't hide behind a nuclear shield because you can't use the nucs unless the other guys does.

Oh, and back on topic.I hope good old Ed is enjoying his new found freedom in Russia.

Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face.

And the locked up rock groups, etc are all US spies?

Do you really think they're going to put down insulted Vlad's policies on the arrest warrant?

Unconstitutional baloney

And who exactly makes the determination who is worthy of protections and who is not.... the Government? Really? That is down right scary.

To the writers of the US Constitution your concept of "the full press" or "the press" in general would have be alien and ludicrous, there was no such thing as being a part of the "press". When they talked about the "press" it meant a physical printing press that ANYONE could possess and use freely in their homes or places of business. Thier concept of "the press" an exact corollary of a modern blogger with a home computer.
