Running a bigadv WU in a VM

Hey guys, I was curious as to how I can tell whether I have downloaded a -bigadv WU or not. I think I have things set up properly, so let me detail what i've done as i've had a nightmare trying to figure this out.

I went to that link on -bigadv in Freakys guide which automatically links to the eVGA forums. I went ahead and downloaded VMware 3.0 and downloaded the FAH linux image version 1.2.

I went ahead and installed the VMware and unzipped that linux image to a folder. After installation, I opened the fah6.vmx file inside the folder. I start up the VM and it goes through a menu of stuff. Within the VM, I run the configuration of the linux client by doing

./fah6 -configonly

From there, I make sure that advmethods is set off, and otherwise set it up how I normally do it in the windows SMP client. As for command line stuff, I make sure to set these switches....

-bigadv -smp 8 -verbosity 9

Once I have done setting it up, I start the client manually by typing ./fah6

I see something working, but am not exactly sure how to tell whether it is a bigadv wu or not. I know that bigadv stuf are A2 WU's, but I didn't see it pop up inside the VM.
 
Which WU did you receive? There are three possible -bigadv units from the ones I've seen: P2681, 2682 and 2683. All others are not -bigadv WUs.

I got WU 2683. I'm just worried that I didn't set up the client properly. When I tried to do the web setup that was listed on the help page, it kept crashing the client and displayed an error message when I hit the submit button. As a result, I went and set it up manually. So far, it is still at 0%, so i'll see what happens in a while.
 
So far it sounds like you have it good so far. Things to be sure of: passkey is entered and 10 regular WUs are completed.

If you've done all of that I'd give it a while to see what you got. In the meantime here's some code from my most recent download so you can compare what you are seeing to what I have. Please ignore the smp -6 flag BTW. Mad scientist and his pet 980x. Anyway key in on the text and see if you have references to the A2 core and one of the project numbers Apollo has mentioned. I have a 2681 running.

OK, that is definitely a -bigadv WU so no problem there. I never had a crash from doing the web setup. Assuming the OC is 100% stable, the only other reason I can think of having crashes is insufficient memory allocated for the VM.

I don't think it could be memory as I have allocated 9gigs of ram to the VM during the VM setup. Is there a log file I can fo find? Can't seem to find one when I looked into the folder that the linux image was unzipped to.

That's more than sufficient and nearly double the minimum so no worries. OOC, how mcuh did you install in total, 12GB?

Yeah, I decided to go safe and install a full 12 gigs. If it isn't needed, I figure that I could always remove 6 and use it towards boxen #2 at some point in the DISTANT future :)

After all, DDR3 is probably going to be around for a long time.
 
One way you can get to the log is by opening your web browser and going to //IPAddress/log.php. The IP address is assigned by the VM when you first start it.

Thanks as i'm heading downstairs now to check on things. I'll give this a try, although I wonder whether I might have screwed up by using the -configonly to set it up since the web setup by punching in that http:// crashed on me.
 
When I screwed up my bigadvs this past weekend I kept running into problems due to not paying attention to all sorts of stuff when I restarted them. Somehow I had autostart going and didn't want it to since I'd rather do my own configs once I got my name, team and passkey in from the webpage, or I forgot to change the Machine ID Number from 1 to something else within -configonly as Linux_FAH assigns the VMs to Machine ID 1 and I already had that number assigned to something else.

It took a few looks at one error in the log and a visit to Task Manager before I realized that I was fighting against a job that was already running. I stopped it from the admin page, went back to the config page and turned off the autostart, rebooted the VM and did the rest of the work in -configonly. I sure learned a lot from screwing up!

For now, I just installed the windows SMP client and will run A3 WU's until I have time to work out a native Linux install. No more of the VMware stuff for me........

I will try to make time this weekend after I get back home from Chicago to do a Ubuntu 9.04 install. Since I am leaving in a couple days, I need whatever is running to be in maximum stability anyway. However I really hope that they hurry up and get Windows SMP clients doing -bigadv for those of us who have been spoiled by GUI's.

If you're using Player 3.0, closing the VM will actually suspend it and therefore preserve its state at the moment of its closing. That is how it functions by default and could mean that your VM was not affected. In any case, you need to complete 10 WUs to be eligible for the bonus. It's faster to run A3 WUs to achieve it.

I actually completed 10 WU's a long time ago. My understanding is that those 10 WU's can be bigadv or regular A3 advmethods WU's. I believe i've comleted close to 20 under my passkey. When I shut down the VM and restarted it, I got a message that the client was unable to retrieve WU and that it was corrupted. As a result, it got rid of it and downloaded a new fresh WU.

I then screwed that up by accident as my computer went to sleep(forgot to turn off power management). When I went to reawake the computer, it was again unable to retreive the WU and discarded it. I am positive I have done something wrong, as I hear that VM is supposed to be easy to use. Until I have time to figure out a native Linux install, I am just going to do SMP windows client for now. I've already messed up 2 bigadv WU's and I don't want to mess any more up as that would take me under the 80% success rate required to recieve them.

There's a setting in the Preferences for VMWare Player you may want to check on to help reduce risk from losing stuff if the VM is closed for whatever reason (like oops I closed the wrong app-been there myself). Go to File>Preferences>When Closing a Virtual Machine and select "Suspend the Virtual Machine." It has saved me a few times where I accidentally closed a VM.

Maybe i'll give it another try, but i'm gonna go do a bunch of SMP A3 WU's for now in order to get my numbers up. Thay way i'll have a larger number of bigadv's I can screw up without dropping below 80%. I also have to get back to my real life as I spent an entire day yesterday stability testing, and I have stuff that desperately needs to be done before I head to Chicago the day after tomarrow.
 
You really don't need the -verbosity flag. :)
And 5gb of ram to the VM is plenty. ;) No need to give it more. :)
 
Well, I think i'm goign to give -bigass another try as I think I know what I did wrong! The web setup by entering that IP address into the browser didn't work for me as I got an error. As a result I set up the Linux client manually using the console to set up and start up. However, I was reading those instructions again and I think I might have had problems because I didn't disable the the web service like it says in #8 of the intructions.......

When this HUGE 6040 A3 work unit finishes(it has been taking a very long time), maybe i'll fire up the VM again and give it another shot. I spent part of my tax refund to build this rig and damnit I want it to be as productive as possible :)
 
Ok, i've got a bigadv going now on my folding rig, so lets see how well it works this time. So far, it is going at a rate of 40-42% of a WU per day. It has been working on it for 12 hours now and is 20% of the way through. Lets hope this works out :) I'm crossing my fingers.

BTW, did anyone notice how freakin huge those 6040 A3 WU's are? It tied up my internet forever uploading and I noticed that it was a 67 mb file.
 
Thus the reason I am seriously thinking of getting a second dsl line.
 
I'm trying one now also, in the VM that was linked in the EVGA forums. Seems to be running ok, around 44:15 per frame. It's about 25% complete.

I want to say the bigadv results are around 95MB....I recall seeing that someplace or another.

I'm out in the middle of nowhere so my upload is under 1mb... it takes a while. I'm going to put my (soon to be two) big adv boxen on a second dsl line that also just happens to plug into my main rig :D Wife is going to be abusing Netflix with the baby coming soon, and here being here at the house all day.
 
I have you beat Kendrak as my upload speeds are horrendously slow. Of the 3 speed packages, I have the middle one offered by Time Warner which limits you to 384kbps upload, and 7mbps download. They have a top of the line one that has 512kbps upload and 14mbps download, but there is no way in HELL i'm going to pay $120 per month for internet access.

I suppose that i'll have to start paying attention to when my folding rig is getting ready to upload before I get on to Xbox Live for multiplayer.
 
The line I'm looking at is 14.99 and has a 768 down and 384 up. Stick the boxen on that line and let them fight over the bandwidth ;)

Internet is really expensive here in Cincinnati because there is no competition. There is DSL which is absolutely slow and lousy unless you happen to live right next to the routing station. As a result, Time Warner and cable in general has control of the market here. I also tried DSL in my area and reliability was a horrendous problem as the phone lines wern't good enough for a consistent connection. I live in the ghetto so nobody gives a frickin care about the quality of service here. While DSL is cheap, the max speed they could get into my neighborhood if the lines were actually decent would be 512kbps upload/512kbps download.

That sounds like fun. Just let me know and I should almost always be available. I actually hope to get out of the city as it has gone to hell. Cincinnati is quickly becoming the next Detroit.

-bigadv will tie down your connection even more. Many people report upload times of 20 minutes or greater. The positive being these WUs take more than 2 days to complete, so it's not that frequent over the course of a week unless you have several clients.

Since I only have one dedicated folding boxen, at least it will be pretty predictable when it will start uploading. At least that will give me a chance to plan my xbox live gaming sessions. It looks like for me, I will be able to complete a -bigadv every 2.5 days @ 3.67ghz.

Congrats! To improve the bonus credit you will need to increase the OC. I know you have been experiencing limitations doing this but IMO your processor should be capable of higher clocks. If you can get it down to around 2.5 days which is achievable, it would be better.

Considering that my system hard locked on me @ 3.67ghz(now downclocked to 3.57ghz@same Vcore), I think I may have hit my limit in terms of speed and stability with this i7 930. I am just hoping that it is stable at the new 3.57ghz speed. Considering that I had to massively increase voltage to get the clocks over 3.67ghz, I suspect this is around where my chip is at the limit for this batch run of processors. 3.67ghz ran just fine for a few days before crashing, but to get it above this speed required a significant increase in voltage from the 1.2685 to 1.35. This took temperatures into the mid and upper 80's with my case. I did try running my case without the side panel, and it allowed the load temps on the cpu to drop by 6-7 degrees.

I followed a combination of Maximumpc, Cecil, and Tomshardware's overclocking guides for the 920.

So long as I can continue to help our team, i'm happy even if I can't net the big points I thought I could. After all, running a -bigadv in less than 3 days still allows me to get more points than just running A3's all the time. 3.57ghz still isn't bad for a processor that is rated to run at 2.8ghz.........

The same thing with the temps happened to me when I pulled off the side panel, my temps dropped quite a bit so it looked like I was just not getting good overall airflow. I almost put a blowhole in my case but decided to get a new case instead.

Yes, I need to recharge my "entertainment" budget but I think i'm going to move everything over to a full tower Cooler Master HAF932 case when I do get some more money. This case is just too tight anyway. However, I do like how that case is so nice and light. It is easy to move around while my desktop rig weighs like a ton.

That is what I get for trying to be cheap. I should have known that a case that was perfectly adequate for the little heat that those old processors generated wouldn't be adequate for a fire-breather like the Core i7. Damn this thing puts out a lot of heat, and I thought that my Phenom put out a lot of heat. I'm jealous at your 32nm chip :)

Yeah, I was talking to a fellow church member today and he was shocked that i'm running an overclocked Core i7 in that case. He told me to either fork over money for water cooling, or get a bigger case as those older generation mid-towers are absolutely inadequate for core i7's even at stock speeds.

If that's true, I'd run the system open without panels until you replace it just to be certain nothing overheats or causes other problems like crashing WUs.
