Well, there are two separate issues here: nexus as defined by the person in that piece means "vanilla android." Nexus to most everyone else means "cheap, high end vanilla android." They said nothing about the main thing people want; cheap high end handset. And this still didn't say much; Google already said that for at least through 2015, there will be new nexus devices.
I think Google should just write a T&C clause which states that all Android phone manufacturers must provide a GPE/pure Android ROM for each phone model freely available to, and installable by, the public.
