Rumor: BioWare “Prototyping” Knights of the Old Republic Reboot

Is it weird how it took us this long to hear about a potentially new, standalone Knights of the Old Republic game? BioWare Austin, the studio behind Star Wars: The Old Republic, is supposedly working on a new KOTOR that began as a remake of the original but spiraled into something else. If true, this is great news for those who are sick of the MMO.

This bit of information comes by way of gaming journalist Liam Robertson, who discussed the topic recently on his Patreon page. Note that as Robertson did not reveal his source(s), this falls very much into the “rumor category” for the time being. “I’ve learned now that [BioWare Austin is] pretty much now exclusively working on Star Wars games and they’re going to be doing that for the indefinite future,” he said during a podcast segment. “What they’re currently working on right now—and I have this on good authority—is a sort of remake/revival of Knights of the Old Republic. I don’t know when this is set to come out, but it has been in development for a little while now.”

Bioware's history shows them only making games with pretty poor game-play (like KotOR) added to their new-found preference for writing stories on the wall in their own shit, how can anyone hold any hope for this?

Hey, KotOR was awesome! Mass Effect 1+2 were great too.

On average, BioWare is a 5.0 out of 10, but they have the potential to make great games.

Mass Effect 3 is awesome, I'm playing it right now. It's ONLY significant flaw was a lackluster ending that they've subsequently rectified.

Also, despite all the hate that it's been getting, Andromeda is actually a pretty damn good game, it was just.... rushed.

Haven't seen the extended ending but from what I was told it only explained more of the shit ending rather than really "fix" it. People weren't upset with the ending, just the lack of choices and making all the different possible ME outcomes boil down to 3 different colored explosions.

They changed the ending. The relay's weren't destroyed, the Normandy wasn't damaged to the point where it wouldn't fly again, you got to see how your decisions over the course of the three games worked out.

It wasn't the 'perfect' ending, but it was head and shoulders above what was originally there.

Damn, that's more than I expected. I need to get around to replaying it.
 
A few years ago I would have been very excited about this. Well, a modern sequel, that is. But I am not excited about 'new' Bioware touching this. Leave it alone.
 
I treat the entirety of ME3 itself as the ending, since the specific results of a lot of your actions are seen during that game, only at the very end do they all come together.

Also, I quite enjoyed KoToR2. I never properly played KoToR, probably due to how in the beginning you are not a Jedi, and I usually play Star Wars games to BE a Jedi.

Also why I enjoyed Academy on the whole than Outcast, but the plot overall is better in the latter.
 
Bioware is a shadow of its former self. SWTOR was fun for a couple of years then the the majority of the folks left when EA took over. They quickly monetized it focused on reskinning the same old items and ignored the storyl which was great! Much like Ubisoft, I've lost faith in their ability to deliver.
 
So, I lack faith in BioWare now (cue Vader quote). The reason is, the people who oversaw the original KOTOR were essentially forced out of the company after EA royally fucked up SWTOR and replaced almost the entire original team (forever fucking up the potential SWTOR had in the process). One of the heads of BioWare retired, and the other left to make his own company.

Since then, BioWare has been a SJW playground run by whiny bitches cutting every corner they can. SWTOR alone, with such great potential, was royally fucked over, its original premise destroyed, and its potential never fully realized (and to be honest, it isn't all on EA - original BioWare bit off more than it could chew in underestimating how quickly players can fly through content, with the pacing in the original middle act dragging and stories losing steam until the end of act 3.) Still, despite 2 major mistakes at the beginning, the game had a shit ton of potential and could have been fixed on the fly had the original crew not gotten fired, with the exception of a handful of holdovers. And to make matters worse, their new community manager didn't give a shit about the community, other than acting like a skeezy jerk on a "trying to sell ice to eskimos" level (Eric Musco can fuck right off).

But I digress.

If EA wants to recapture the magic, I would imagine this was an attempt to modernize the original KOTOR, however, given the new unified directive of everything mattering from Lucasfilm, right down to the games being included in continuity, this is an opportunity for BioWare to reboot the franchise in such a way as to fit into the new Star Wars continuity.

If they go that route, then the only thing I would suggest, other than that they keep their politics out of Star Wars, is that 1) they remember Revan only works in the fans' minds as a redeemed Sith Lord or at worst, a semi-redeemed Anti-hero embracing both the light and dark sides and perhaps rejecting BOTH jedi and sith. If you make Revan full Sith for the sake of continuity, simplicity, or some other bullshit reason, the reboot can fuck right off.

And 2) STATEMENT: HK-47 4 LIFE MEATBAGS. - Revan and HK ARE the KOTOR series. Get those 2 right and keep your politics out of the game, and it will be VERY hard to fuck this up.

This. 5 years ago I would have been jazzed about it, but they came out with SWTOR instead. Only thing I liked about that game was the cutscenes :)

But now? I dunno, kind of feels like Star Wars overload, but maybe just me. Plus the Andromeda 3 ring circus going on.

Lastly, I know this isn't Bioware's problem exactly, but why can't someone remaster the X-wing & Tie fighter games? Maybe expand on them and put in missions from Rebels or Skarif. I would pay cash money for a good Xwing reboot.
 
The frustrating part is every now and then, you find some Indy Dev who just starts making a reboot of a game; and the reboot looks awesome and all the fans are excited. And then the cease and desist comes; no company ever goes, "Wow, you're doing our work for us, let's hire you and promote the crap out of this reboot, look at this reception!" I mention this because there are so many new tools that make development much more accessible than in the past and there is all this nostalgic content that could be brought back but such a minority of it ever actually is.

Group you've been told to hate isn't always responsible for everything that makes you sad or angry. Bioware makes lazy, half-assed games now, they don't focus on group you've been told to hate.

They don't focus on making games at all.

Hence the aggressive marketing to all kinds of people, including group you've been told to hate.

Completely agree with but would like to note (not happily) Disney as being more of a culprit of politics - SJW or other - than even Bioware.

Well, Bethesda RPGs and BioWare RPGs are bought for different reasons. Nobody purchases Skyrim or Fallout for tight combat and expertly told, character-driven stories. Nobody bought Mass Effect or Dragon Age looking for sprawling freedom and unique stories of exploration.

I've seen indie games that had better facial animations and entity positioning. 45mil should buy me decent facial stuff.

Disney is no better, but keep in mind, EA bought BioWare and trashed SWTOR before Disney bought Star Wars.

While I enjoyed Bastila (as well as sussing up that prim brit), even I have to admit she isn't truly core to the story - its always been centered around Revan, and HK was the breakout star that it just wouldn't feel like Star Wars without him - like the original movies without C-3P0.

Don't get me wrong - they could choose to include Bastila, but then by that point, it might restrain Bioware creatively - half of the fans will want a recreation, and the other half will bitch that they are covering the same ground.

Creatively, if they reboot, having them move away from all the other characters and just have it HK and Revan in a new and different story might make sense - I'd even have Revan as either the primary antagonist, or an anti-hero that keeps popping up in the story trying to solve things his way while you are trying to obey the Jedi Council, which to me if you can nail a great new villain, and then add Revan into the mix as Anti-Hero, it could spice things up, as well as lead to some of the moral quandary choices Bioware used to be known for, if you are given a choice to leave the Jedi and become an Anti-hero like Revan at some point.

A video cherry picking the worst occurrences, and mentioning nothing about the hundreds of hours of other footage in the game that is fine.

Considering how long it's been since kotor, I wouldn't mind if they simply remade the successful classics like xwing, JK, but if they do Kotor, make it kotor 1+2 with modern graphics, fix the ending of kotor 2, then proceeded to make a sequel.

That and let the bioware artists do their thing and have the characters be beautiful instead of the "lets make them more realistic" like they did with ME:A. It's amazing a big company like EA has forgotten that they hire actors and actresses for their attractiveness, not because they look like the average people next door. It's supposed to be fantasy, not reality.

Kind of timely.

I just reinstalled Kotor 1 from GOG. I still have the boxed game from ages ago when I last played(memory mostly faded), but I didn't want it's crappy Starforce or Secure Rom DRM or whatever infecting my system. So I picked up Kotor 1 and 2 on a GoG sale.

Just last night I built Scout and went planetside...

That's what all of them say. I generally don't like people spreading misconceptions. But if it's by a new reg I get doubly suspicious. It might even be someone trolling with a second reg. But you dodged the real point. Does your knowledge of the animation quality in MEA extend beyond what you saw from some youtuber(s) wanting a piece of the pie?

Dragon Ages are the pinnacle of Bioware now i'd say. Great games and story.

Every new reg that suspiciously appears when the discussion is about something "controversial" says that they're lurkers who lost their reg, or never had a reg before.

My point was clear you not addressing it is fact. Therefore there is nothing incorrect about the statement that you're dodging the point.
