Rotten Tomatoes Bans "Want to See" Score, User Comments before Films' Release

Rottentomatoes has been shit for years. Soon it will be irredeemable.

next in stop would be deep moderation of the audience review of 'selected' films. A low cost, high effectiveness PR countermeasure

*selected films being activist films, like how Captain Marvel is all about ultra-feminism, from big studios whom have sway to pressure.

Expect moderation for the critical first 2 weeks.

oh, and lolwtf. Heard this on some youtube channels about choices being borked in Aus, but they have picked up more here

I honestly just think we've hit saturation with Marvel movies.

Possibly, but honestly I think pretty much all of the comic book movies since Iron Man have been pure ass. Avengers? Sucked, all of them. Wonder woman? Dont get me started. Black panther? Too much SJW involvement for me. They're making movies just to make movies. They're picking all these obscure heroes that nobody but the biggest fans give a shit about. Even the latest batch of x-men movies during the wonder years are such a bore. Everyone thinks that marvel/DC is some amazing thriving universe with thousands of epic stories. No, there's like 3 or 4 good franchises and the rest was just nerd porn.

Yep not surprised I mean how dare people have opinions that don't align with a specific cultural narrative being pushed by movie studios. A real liberal knows the remedy to bad speech is good speech not censorship. Sadly real liberals all seem to have died off.

Yeah, the amount of butthurt over her disliking that her press junkets were 97% white male is pretty indicative of how broken society has become. She specifically said that she didn't hate white men, just that she wanted historically marginalized viewpoints represented.

Hey, white males are REPRESSED I tell you!

In fairness, not sure if she repeated herself differently elsewhere but she elaborated that she wanted more "chairs at the table, and not replacing white / male reporters" #backpedalling I know but she did do it. As for the "not for white males," she made that speech in reference to another of her movies, a cartoon / animation IIRC not Captain Marvel. I could be wrong, but that was the video clip I saw.

I'll give her a pass because she has nice tits.

Eh, I wasn't honestly going to watch this one anyway. Never heard of her character until this whole "i am woman hear me roar" thing started happening the past year. Otherwise, i think she's ok for the role. You need to be as slim and aerodynamic as possible to fly like she does, hence no ass or tits to weigh her down.

First of all, on Rotten Tomatoes. Regardless of anything else, I have zero problem with them removing a "want to see" comment/rating system. There's really no point for it as it can be easily manipulated and serves no useful purpose. It should not have been there to start, and this latest controversy simply sheds light on it - it should have been gone a long time ago.

Furthermore, we need to have a real discussion on the role of Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic when it comes to the value of our media. Both of these have proven to be a big issue by centralizing and averaging all the invited responses - from "official" critics or user scores alike - and spitting out a homogenized rating...which is promptly stuck onto that film forever. This has no say nothing for the timing in how early reviews can by nature (even legit post release ones) can affect what people will think of the movie/show/game; consider that if out of the 10 first professional reviews half of them were near perfect but a couple of them were midding-to-low...which now has handicapped the RT score until there are enough other higher ones to counter it but in the meantime, it means both reviewers and people going to the movies wonder that first or second weekend "eh, I hear its not so great"...which affects its overall score, popular understanding of its validity, and perhaps even its take at the box office.

This is to say nothing for Professional vs User reviews and the fact that a movie, show or game these days are nearly dependent on these aggregate sites for their overall "rating", sadly. Consider that when Zelda: Breath of the Wild came out there was a certain demographic that was absolutely livid because a couple of reviewers didn't give it the near-to-perfect 10 rating, which meant that it could never ascend as a high as older Zeldas or other older games in future "best reviewed of all time" lists because those older games were from a different cultural era when reviews were...well...different. Its crazy that reviewers got tons of hatemail and other nonsense because of their assessment that the game was merely awesome and not perfect, but its also crazy that just a single or handful or reviews like that will forever decide the game's "official' rating and kick it below others forever, is also a problem. We need to get away from these aggregate rating sites entirely and stop plasting their numbers and icons all over everything as if it is the final arbiter of the media's ultimate rating. Though their system isn't perfect, Steam's user rating system for games is tremendously better than anything that Metacritic or Rotten Tomatoes has come up with in terms of how they handle not just scoring (ie everyone gives it a Thumbs Up or Thumbs Down. That's it. No stars. etc) but how to deal with spoiler effects and more, as well as things like evolution "what is the game's score lately", what reviews are deemed helpful or funny, what curators like which titles etc.... this is leagues ahead of the hugely monetized Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic systems!

Anyway, now to the Captain Marvel / Brie Larson thing. First guys... seriously, if we're going to have a real conversation on this lets not spend time talking about her appearance/hotness/ass. It just gives the "other side" more ammo and justification, on top of being immature. Next, things are flying way off kilter here with some of the quotes about Jesuit conspiracies and links to heavily biased websites (Brietbart and OneAngryGamer play to this kind of rage from the other side, exclusively); lets keep them off as they don't offer very much but screaming from the other side so to speak. From what I've read, there seems to be a lot of "I heard that she said this" kind of misinformation or at least questions of its validity. Like a few others have posted, its at least possible that her statements have been taken out of context (ie someone above linked about her show being targeted not at white males was some other female-focused kids project not in reference to Captain Marvel. This isn't necessarily a bad thing - if you asked me if Dora The Explorer was "for" adult white males I'd say not to that and it shouldn't be controversial, right?).

I've not looked deeply into this issue to piece through the narratives, but I don't see any reason at the moment to simply not see Captain Marvel if you were otherwise interested in doing so. Maybe if I have the time to really look at all these clips in question - not clips from the clips devoid of context, not other people's raging over them etc.. - I'd feel differently if things were really bad enough that her presence tarnished the project.. but that doesn't seem too likely; its not like she has stated that every ticket bought or her take goes toward sterilizing white cisgender males or something crazy. Ultimately the movie will succeed or fail by its own merits as a Marvel universe property, but look at it another way. You don't want the politically correct corner to come out if the movie doesn't do as well as expected and blame it all on white male nerds who threw a tantrum...and have it believable, right? Lets try to look at the whole picture.

Yeah the judging a woman's merit based solely on her ass or tits is bullshit. That toxic masculinity guiding your life ensures women see you as a shallow asshole. Sure looks are part of the equation, but a little life advice, starts viewing them as people, not just based on two bags of fat hanging off the front of em. You'll find a much more fulfilling relationship.

I like that Brie speaks her mind and isn't a brainwashed celeb just spewing PR approved drivel, same with JLaw. Personality and sense of humour do it for me. Looking forward to seeing it and then judging the movie, one off comments taken out of context shouldn't have you boys shook

careful here, we are all getting into soapbox territory here. (by that I mean everyone including me now) but I still think that she had much better option to try and be "inclusive" that would have not alienated so much of her perspective audience. she is after all supposed to be selling a product first and foremost.

They really do need to put a warning label on soy packets.

"other side"

As I read your post I know you mean the "other side" to be SJWs/Liberals. I get why you would think that, but you made an overall well thought out and reasoned post with a neutral viewpoint on this topic. I hope you realize that you are on the "right side" - intelligent people who can think critically and don't hold to viewpoints they haven't carefully considered - and the "other side" is actually the rabble who get outraged at everything, whether that is SJWs/Liberals or the Breitbart/Infowars/4chan types. There are people capable of thinking critically about an issue, and the morons of the mobs who cannot. Personally I think liberal outrage is often silly but is often out of overwrought kindness, while conservative outrage is usually greedy and mean-spirited. But the kind of people up in arms about everything all the time are definitely "the other side," no matter what political affiliation they ascribe themselves.

I don't use metacritic that often, but I'm fine with RT. I look at it as something that gives you an overall idea of what a large group of critics think (though I almost exclusively stick to the cream of the crop rating) and I also have a handful of critics I look at in addition to that (mostly Jame Berardinelli, who I especially trust for movies like Captain Marvel, because while he's a big fan of film, he's also a fan of SciFi/Fantasy movies. If a movie is in a genre that I often like and the reviews are middling and the audience is very strong, I'll probably go anyway. But for something like Horror, if the critics aren't really strong, I'm not going, because it's not a genre I like.

Alternatively, if RT has super strong reviews over all, I'll probably just go (and ignore the audience...esp on RT, where there are far more trolling reviews than you'll find on IMDB...or alternatively the trolls are just outnumbered by people who actually saw the movie).

Whatever the case, I find it a useful tool, but I go to a lot of movies, since AMC started a 20 buck/month for up to 3 movies/week program.

My $0.02

When they dropped the first trailer for Captain Marvel, it looked like fun. There were some dry character bits, some funny-ish bits, interesting stuff like the grandma fight, and a small bit of some not very good CGI captain marvel.

Then the TV spots hit and made it look not very fun at all. It was mostly a few of the dry boring bits with teh bad cgi as the halo scene.

I don't know which is right, but at this point, the volume of content produced and disseminated are primarily variations on the TV spots and all have the same problem. They are all variations on anchoring uninteresting looking stuff to that same bad CGI scene.

Then you top it off with some weird niche marketing about is the cat the alien cat like thing form the comics or not, and have the star bringing way too much attention to her own sense of wokeness to the table.

You don't need to argue about female representation unless you think the movie was treated unfairly and wasn't what you wanted. Just let it be a woman kicking ass and get on with it.

If you want to be interviewed by woke media, tell Disney you'll do that press junket for free. If they won't let you make that the news. Don't go projecting it on the public at large... bit the ahnd that feeds you or shut up.

IF that was even asked for, and that's a big IF there, the reason why you were told no is likely that once you get into the land of virtue signaling and purity tests, the credit of a rich, young, blond white woman doesn't go very far and the narrative will be 100% about why isn't captain marvel representing this or that marginalized faction. Disney likely doesn't want their marketing turned into a contest of who is the most aggrieved.

Me as a consumer? My question is if the original trailer was giving a fake impression of a fun entertaining movie, or if the TV spots were givgin a false impression of an overly meh semi boring movie. Either way it wouldn't be the first marvel flick to fall into either of those categories. Guardians of the galaxy seemed undersold ot me and was a hoot. The sequel was IMO way oversold and very meh despite me wanting to like it.

As for removing the want to see rating, it was never likely much use as a public stat, but was probably really useful as salable information combined with people's ratings for previous franchise films. I'm not sure how it could have a review bombing effect though.

If you are 37 movies deep in the MCU universe, you are probably watching it regardless. If you hate anything with a lead woman, you are probably not watching it regardless. If you have been dying for female led films, you were probably watching it regardless of what anyone says. That is unless you think she's too white, then your bigoted ass isn't watching it and was no more likely to be there opening night than a klansman was for black panther.

IMO the publicity machine for Captain Marvel gets somewhere between a C- and a D-.

After reality hit home of the disastrous marking tour, the guns came out. Latest new Marketing Art makes it look like she's about to burst out of her suit any second.

ROFL What Brie Larson was responding to was her press junkets.

Apparently not, because even in your link it mentions other times she has made comments about "white dudes". The problem is that she is consistently using labels while wanting more inclusion. Perhaps those wanting inclusion should just stop using labels...

The problem with this lingo is it goes both ways. You want inclusion, but you say you don't want to hear opinions from 40 year old white dudes because the movie wasn't made for them. Okay, well one, that is probably why it bombed (haha, no actually it was because it just wasn't good for any demographic). And two, then how about we stop pretending we need to make other things inclusive if you don't have to make movies that are inclusive? I mean seriously. The hypocrisy is thick here.

Now, as far as whether or not that will affect me seeing Captain Marvel, no, it won't. There was a lot of stupid press and crap built up for Black Panther, I still saw that, well not in the theaters, but when it was free to stream (which is honestly how I see most movies now)...

Have they seen the movie? No they have not. So yeah, their "opinion" is trolling.

Did you read the article? The thing people were commenting with before it got removed was "Do you intend to see the movie"

Of course they hadn't seen the movie! Would be a bit daft to ask someone if they intended to see the movie if they had already seen it!

Finally, the lead in the movie told men to stay away. So if a man follows directions and indicates they don't in tend to see the movie that's now trolling?

I can't believe I'm even having to point this out. Is common sense really this far gone in our society today?

"white men, this movie isn't made for you so dont watch it" paraphrased...
Oh bullshit. Brie Larson said that only to get people's blood pressure up and the whole lot of you fell for it. Meanwhile she's laughing at all of you, probably gasping for breath at the same time.

The day I get some time to see this movie I'm going to see it. I don't give a flying fuck what critics or other people say about a movie, I'm still going to see it if I'm interested in it. People said that Solo: A Star Wars Movie was bad and I didn't see it in theaters, instead I watched it at a friend's house and I loved the movie. It was a fun ride of a movie. That has taught me one thing... don't believe the shit you see on the Internet!!!

As i said earlier, if you haven't seen the movie, I don't care what you think. I also don't care what the lead said (and unlike so many hear, I've never seen what she said, because I don't care). It's movie. I'll look at reviews from some reviewers I like and that's about it. User reviews (assuming there's not a bunch of butt hurt guys whining) are almost always way too positive on Genre movies. If there's a big backlash because of whatever, they're way too negative. Again, I trust IMDB users way more than RT, but I'll trust a James Berardinelli over almost all user scores.

Yeah that's one where I was glad I saw it in theaters. It was excellent. I didn't get all the political complaints about the movie. It was fun and that's all I can hope for form Star Wars. It's never had particularly deep story telling.

Fine - but that's not what the original article or point was about so not sure why you are commenting in this thread.
My point is it's removal is irrelevant. What, do you really live to see uninformed opinions and meaningless metrics?

90% want to see X. 90% of what? why 90% of uninformed users who could be bothered to log into RT and say they do or do not want to see something.
And yes, they removed it, because RT users are often dicks. It's the same reason why they removed commenting on individual reviewers. It's the main reason I rarely look at the user score and even less frequently look at the reviews. Users are useless. For the most part, they're either trolls are fanboys of the movie or genre. The former is always useless, and the latter is only useful if you're a fanboy.

Only cheer leading allowed for the products of our corporate masters. !!!

lol - I live to see people making big deals out of "meaningless" things.

People love to use words like meaningless while their actions tell a different story

No. I literally said cheer leading is also useless, unless one has seen the movie. But trolling is even less useful than people posting because of some trailer.
WTH do I care if Brie Larson offended you or if Mel Gibson offended someone else? It has nothing to do with the movie.

Around here, everyone was butt hurt about Star Wars Solo movie. Guess what? It was a fun movie, something that has rarely happened after the 2nd act of Return of the Jedi.

Arguing about something doesn't make it less meaningless. Are you actually saying you made movie decisions based on the percentage of people, who took an online poll, that want to see said movie?

The last movie I see was Spiderman 2 and that screen blinded me for about a whole week due to the projector they used.
Maybe it's all digital or something I haven't tired a movie since then. Unless I buy a Hard Copy like I did with SOLO I really liked that movie as tame as it was. Hey it's Ron Howard how can you pass that up.
