Well he thought he could do everything.
You do realise Kylo was not actually trained fully, he had strengths but in certain areas, and when she managed to match him in combat he had also been shot, which normally fully drops any other person we see in Star Wars films.
Rey also had a more aggressive background life to that of Luke Skywalker, and remember in the 1st film he started to learn quickly how to defend himself with blast shield covering his face so 'blinded' while blocking the attacks from the training balls (whatever they are called) which fires low powered shots at him.
Their shooting skills pretty much match and also their flying skills, while Ren did learn to perceive a person's mind quicker and with more detail (Luke could only generally I got a bad feeling) she could not force Kylo and only a weak minded trooper.

But then he was facing Darth Vader and not Kylo, and no comparison between the two tbh and would had been silly if he even survived like he did without even partial training from Yoda.
In the TFA did Rey ever lift anything with the force?
In all the narratives they have shown this to be one of the most difficult techniques to master (including in the animation series).
Anyway with partial true Jedi training Luke finally managed to defeat Darth Vader who was not just fully trained but also incredibly strong in all ways of the Jedi.

But both films (and especially Episode V) created some leeway for their narratives-plots-action with regards to Luke and Rey.
    Cheers

Yeah I got to check it out, shouldn't knock it till I see it. I've been very disappointed at movies where a weakly 110lb woman can smash a 280lb man, don't get me wrong, I hate movies where the male hero does everything perfectly (Vandetta guy... well, at least he's disfigured). Why not make a Pvt. Vasques-like character from Aliens a heroine? G.I Jane? That I can accept and will watch without rolling my eyes.

No woman has walked out on me from my kitchen, that's the respect I get from them when they are in my home. GilmourD, it's just my opinion on a movie which I have no problem if you enjoy it. Thank you kindly.

    That is what I thought.

How was Anakin a kick ass pilot at age (little - 7? 11?)? Strong with the force they are.

Movies are only one aspect of the revenue stream, the secondary markets that stem from this matter often more so, i.e. are they going to sell more toys. One of the big reasons a 3rd Tron movie was scrapped, not big on toy sales.

Pretty sure he was being sarcastic. That's great numbers and the movie will easily go past 500mil and then some.

Dubious relationship... I'm not the kind of guy that commits, there's much to enjoy here and I let them know beforehand... also, don't women respect you in your own home? I'd show them out if they are being disrespectful to me unless I rightfully deserved it.

Alright cool cool, me and the guys are going to see Rogue One this weekend, seems like the consensus here are saying that it's good, and not the same as the ultra fem TFA.

What a fucking bad ass movie. I played KOTOR and it was VERY refreshing to see the aspect of a Smuggler and even a trooper. So many damn lil things they put in the movie too. And the Reference to Star Wars Rebels was badass!

I really liked the movie, and getting it told from the "grunts" perspective was nice. I think that overall they did a really good job. Perfect? No but nothing so bad as to make me dislike any particular moment or that I had not seen something.

The fan service and nods to the original 3 were not so in your face as to make you see them, just hey, I recognize those folks...

That guys feel so threatened by women having the lead role in a film would be so hilarious if it wasn't so fucking pathetic.

  16. As I just watched star wars 1 yesterday, I can safely tell you as a child Anakin was a horrid pilot. Great pod racer maybe...Pilot horrid. It was pure luck he blew up the reactor in the battle station.

  17. Oh I have zip problems with a lead woman. But as I have said before "if I go into a firefight with an 80+ pound pack on our back...Nothing personal but I'm picking the guy.". Now if I needed a sharp shooter or a good pilot or analyst then I have zero qualms with a woman. In fact with a sharp shooter I would prefer it.

I like characters like Lt valesqez from aliens or GI Jane (as previously mentioned) because they are limited but real.

Likewise in movie the suspension of disbelief goes down when a tiny woman takes on a big military guy and wins. If they won it's because the fight was uneven or stupid luck or she took a cheap shot (gonads) that you never see.

There's a reason you as a man should never hit a girl. You have an unfair advantage.

  18. You'll have to wait. Given the tepid response the follow-up was cancelled

  19. Now is star wars dead? Nope. They will keep churning out crap because people desperate for more will pay for turds...Much like the star trek reboots.

Much better can be made. But it isn't because Hollywood has poop for brains when it comes to creativity lately.*. If I see another poorly written plot hole filled reboot I'm going to puke.

*I'll put an exception in for marvel avengers and X men which still invest in character development and motivation with logical plots.

What reference? I must've missed that. I was looking to see if they did anything towards Rebels, or a character from it somewhere, and I didn't catch anything.

There is a good amount. You can see Ghost, their ship from Rebels, multiple times. First on Yavin 4 then again in space during the battle. "General Syndulla" is being called over the intercom on Yavin 4 suggesting Hera is nearby. Chopper makes a full appearance on the left side of the screen, when the communications officer runs to Mon Mothma to tell her the news about the activity on Scarif.

Minor details, Zeb’s curse word "Karabast!" is used by Pao when AT-ACTS approaches. The Hammerhead Corvette, the ship that pushed the Star Destroyer, first appeared in Rebels.

I have my fingers crossed maybe Alien Covenant can give me some decent sci fi

I get the sarcasm, but the studio only gets a cut of the box office take. It's complicated depending on the movie, country of release ($290 million was the estimated world-wide take) and number of weeks since release, but typically varies from ~80% down to 50% for domestic releases for a big movie in the first several weeks. The $200 million budget doesn't including marketing, which could be from tens of millions up to possibly over $100 million for a Star Wars movie.

But to the point, it looks like Rogue One will be a very profitable movie for Disney even after all the expenses. My biggest issue with Rogue One is that Disney should have hired a better director. The first half of the movie is kind of a mess, and that gamble to possibly save some money could have ruined the potential of these stand-alone movies. If Rogue One turns out to exceed expectations, I think Disney will have better chances of finding better writers and directors wanting to work on these stand-alone movies.

If you like Star Wars and put it in proper context with the other films, it's a good movie. The complaints I see are valid, but nothing that kills the movie for me. Not even close. Some things are nods to the Clone Wars and Rebels TV shows, but they still stand on their own in this film.

The last few minutes .... well, I watched it Sunday and I'm still sporting a hard on after that last part.

Harry Potter pulls the same survival stunt in one form or another seven times and everyone loved it.

The TFA bashers need to just shut up and enjoy the damn movie. Seems like most of them are either mad that the terrible Star Wars EU finally got trashed or they're conservative political trolls out on their own mindless social justice crusade.

He wouldn't want to hit my wife. He wouldn't win that battle. There's a reason I call her The Beast From the East. Good Estonian/Ukranian women will fuck you up if you get them angry. I'm glad she's on my side.

Thats great that you enjoyed it. Some of us didn't care for it. Too many coincidences, plot holes, etc... I can't hate on Rey though since she is a decent character except for the fact she is perfect in everything.

Saw it last night. R1 significantly better than TFA. Great movie? Nah, but a good one, good enough to be worth the 10 bux for the 2 hours. The only thing I'll agree with on the OP reviewer is that it is literally too dark, at least for 3d. Invest in some set lighting for God's sake, or at least turn up the brightness slider a notch or two in post process....

Yeah, I have to be some kind of SJW because I don't like TFA....totally nailed it!

Nope, sorry, some people just have different opinions and think it was a poorly written movie that borrowed too much from A New Hope and had terribly written characters.

Has nothing to do with her being female at all.

You want to see good female action characters? Ripley, Furiosa, Sarah Connor, Vasquez, Beatrix, etc. There's plenty of good movies with great female leads.

Finn was just as poorly written as Rey was. He had a great origin and setup, a Storm trooper who has a mental break when he sees his fellow stormtrooper die and the violence. Where did they go with this? Absolutely no freaking where! An hour later and he's laughing while shooting his fellow storm troopers (many of which he grew up with/knew) with 0 problems. His entire character devolved into being NOTHING more then the "funny" man, they basically tried to make him into the new Han Solo, but they left out all of the other facets to Han's character that made him a great and memorable character, it wasn't simply his wise cracking lines.

Both he and Rey were poorly written one-dimensional characters with as much depth to them as a puddle.

Which is why Rogue One was surprising and shows that they can actually make good movies if they don't try to make a cheap rip-off of the old Star Wars movies.

That's all JJ Abrams knows how to do though.

Saw it earlier and I really liked it. I didn't leave the movie all hyped and ready to go again, it was a movie that left me more thinking about it. The movie has it's share of problems, like all movies, but there is one big thing that bugged me: The CG faces. For Leia is was fine since it was one scene, but holy fuck they butchered the job on Grand Moff Tarkin. I know there is only so much they can do given the constraints, but they should have kept him more in the shadows and not had that uncanny valley face full force on screen for extended periods of time.

To counter that nitpick: Holy fuck the camera work in the movie was outstanding. The movie not only looked beautiful but the way everything was shot was amazing. Edwards has a real eye for scale and he showed it off in full force here. Even the action scenes were shot really well. Easily the best camera works in the entire franchise (especially coming from the decent, but not amazing work from TFA). A couple shots made the models a bit more obvious than they needed to be, but it was worth it to understand the emotion of the scene.

Really? I never got the uncanny valley feeling from Tarkin at all. I thought he looked great.

I saw it in Imax 3D though, maybe the 3D effect softened the image so much I didn't notice.

I thought the models looked poor, worse than GCI. I assume the star destroyers were the models, because they had a distinct lack of detail.

Aside from that I thought the movie was rather good. I enjoyed it a good bit more than The Force Awakens. The previous movie felt like a lot of cliches were forced and everything seemed a bit rushed. Not a horrible movie, but this had a much more developed and focused plot. Going to agree with you on the sense of scale though. Excellent job and I thought the battle scenes looked excellent because of it. We got to see the big picture of the battle, and honestly, I think the end battle was the best battle scene out of the last 5 movies. Perhaps even better than some of the originals.
