I found out that my scenario is not unique and is becoming more and more common as the homeless population grows.

That's the problem you let one guy stop you.....if that's the case then all welfare programs and social programs should stop because people abuse those systems more wildly.....Get my point? That guy deserves to be on the street sure, fine, but someone else might be more grateful....you never know who's life you can change by one simple act that's all i'm saying.

It's actually funny you mention that, because at a place I worked years and years ago the easiest method we had to deal with vagrants out front begging for stuff was to hand them a job application.
 
Those do gooders should've helped the homeless already. Oh no we don't want to help them, but don't send them away from campus grounds. So that's the standard you care about the homeless problem? It seems to me that all you care about is your own conscience. If you really want to help them help them, volunteer, donate, whatever, but allowing them on grounds where they have no business being is no help, it's just virtue signalling.
 
All you need to do is dry up the supply of crumpled hats and pocket lint and they'll shuffle off to LA.

All welfare programs should stop, but that's another topic.

To think that giving a meal to somebody is going to change their life is naive. Real life isn't the movies, they aren't going to suddenly pick themselves up off the streets and change their ways just because you gave them a cheeseburger. If you truly want to help, then by all means do it, but don't chastise those that have no interest in doing so. These people are fully grown and are not our problem, and there is no reasonable expectation that they should be my problem.

That might be a good idea actually. Get a stack of applications from your nears McD's (if they even do paper applications anymore), then when a vagrant approaches you for food or money, hand them an application! Assuming they can read, maybe a few might try. It would certainly be better than food or a few dollars.

I was in SF with a class going through some training out in the streets there. They came back with several stories about their encounters with homeless there. One guy reported seeing this woman get up from the bench at the bus stop, walk around behind it, and she dropped her drawers and a deuce on the spot. She just tugged them back up and went right back to her stoop.

What do you think? Maybe she'll use that application to wipe her ass with?

I would be willing to help anyone who is actively trying to turn thier life around and on the other hand I don’t give two shits about leeches to society.

And that is all the more evidence that people like that don't want help, they just want handouts. It's still a better option than feeding and paying for them. At least then you can say you really did try.

Sound like Seattle. People who want the help get it, and those who don't are all over the streets crapping and injecting themselves. The majority of people you see as homeless in Seattle are simply BUMS, and will take all you give them and more.

This is exactly where I live. I am right against the canal as well with the dirt field right in front of my house. Its a very prime spot.

Actually, you're just missing the point entirely here. Im all abojt helping people out when possible. But im not going to support people who break the law. The use of iilegal drugs and automobile vandalism must not be supported.

No one here is saying "I don't believe in helping people." But just because someone is homeless doesn't suddenly mean they're entitled.
 
I think we're mixing up homeless people with bums. There are homeless people with full-time jobs and good members of society.

Thing is stealthballer123, I see something in your posts that I agree with. Something along the lines of X-mas time is supposed to be a time when we take a look at ourselves, that we take a moment and do something for someone, some kindness, that we just never seem to have time to think about most of the year. It's like a reminder that we can take a short break from worrying just about ourselves and our own, and for a moment do something kind for a stranger who isn't doing as well as we are, no matter where you are on that scale, usually someone is a rung down from where we are sitting on that ladder. So I get that, I think most all the guys here get that.

But what we also get, is that some people deserve some help, and other people have been offered every kind of help there is and won't make good use of it no matter what. The label "homeless" is not one size fits all.

Maybe you can find a way to extend just a little credit to the douche bags that maybe they are "shitting" on a particular species of homeless and not take it for granted that we are shitting on good people suffering from bad times and that instead we are directing our comments against those who actually deserve some ridicule not because they are in bad shape, but because they choose to be there and take advantage of those who would really want to help someone who needs it.

Well we're certainly trying to blur the line at least.
 
I volunteered at a local food bank for a few years. We got food from local businesses, trucked it to a church basement, set up tables and created meal prep plans based on what we had available each month. We also had county workers set up for state benefits, health care, housing, etc.

It was a tough few years to say the least. I lost a lot of faith in humanity. Generally speaking, it was the most entitled group of people I ever interacted with. They would bitch and complain that they got 5 pounds of frozen chicken last month and it's chicken again this month. Note, this was in addition to other seasonal or available protean offered each month. Some things like chicken, potatoes/rice, canned vegetable, were staples that we had every month from corporate sponsors. They complained about the boxed goods and canned goods, the fresh fruit that was available... They complained about everything.

This was all free food, no cost to them. It was shelf ready. name brand, good food that they complained about. Our servings were based on household and current nutrition guidelines. That is, they received a mix of food for the entire family. For free. Never mind their food stamps and other benefits.

The last straw was seeing how much of the free food was sold for cash that went to tobacco and alcohol, or was just thrown away outside the church.

So call me heartless or call me cold when I walk by a homeless person. But I have seen what is available to them. Not just in resources and goods, but in human capital. The time I spent with dozens of others to help the needy, only to be bitched at, and to have perfect food tossed aside, has made me jaded.

With that being said, I absolutely encourage everyone to volunteer and help at least once. There are a few, so very few, who actually want and appreciate your help. And you'll also get to see the real side of so many hot button issues and form your own opinion.

That site that Stealthballer123 pointed out above said that there is a good half a million homeless peeps in the US on any given night. I'm thinking that the percentage that have paying jobs are rather low and certainly far from common among them.

Same experience here.. Some folks I truly felt bad for and I thought absolutely deserved the various government entitlements. Some of these people were just messed up in the head and really should have been in a mental asylum. Unfortunately we just don't have these institutions in place anymore for people who actually have mental problems.

That being said - The majority of people I interfaced with were people that had absolutely no mental/physical problems and were what I would call 'generational welfare recipients'. Due to the structure of our welfare/entitlement programs since the mid/late 60's you've got multiple generations of people now who live like this because the entitlements exist to allow them to do so. These people are also typically completely ungrateful and tend to put the blame on everyone but themselves. You could give a person like this ten million dollars and they'd blow through it in a matter of years and be right back out on the streets again. They simply don't know how to support themselves, and the system has been designed to where they are never weened off the government's tit. I'll note that this is largely by design by 'progressive' politicians. The more folks the left can suck into welfare programs and make dependent on the government the more votes they'll have.

My ex wife took my kids in 2013, she then joined a cult. December of 2013 my ex wife took my 2 children to a cult compound and she signed up quick. They then spent 12 months extorting me for 122k. I messaged kyle during all of this, I have been a member since 2001, and I was told by kyle I was only allowed to talk about it if I was a paying member. I was fucking broke and begging for help, and kyle decided I should pay him for the privilege of voicing that opinion.

I don't honestly give a single fuck if you listen to me. This site is a coalition of immoral people looking for a handout(cut my taxes!!!!!).

My dad's dying of cancer and I found a way to let my kids know.
she(my daughter) told me to go fuck myself for ruining her life.

there is no positive outcome. My life is a complete waste.
I am not out of line for trying to make a difference in those who aren't in my position.

we can be so much more than this.
