There's nothing specific in the rules about this so I was just wondering what the general consensus among the admins is about replying to old threads. It's not like I plan to go bump 50 old topics or something, but I'm curious; if you happen to come across a topic and you have something relevant to say, what's the correct/preferred thing to do... eg, just shut up because the thread is old, or post a new topic about it or it's okay to post in the original thread as long as you're not going around bumping old topics just for the sake of it.

IMHO it really depends on the thread. Has to be a subjective decision.
There are people who bump old threads and say things like "I agree" which is really stupid in my opinion. Others say "can I get any more information on this" and thats what this forum is for in my opinion.
There was a thread about a water pump in the Hot Deals section. It was brought back to life about 4 months after its first death. The next guy in line (the one who brought it back) put in useful information, and the thread actual gained from it, and others replied concerning it. Now, had the deal be dead, that threads prime for the lock, but I think the deal might have still been active.
One place not to start a new thread is in the Hot Deals section, or especially the Free Stuff section. Many people start threads with titles like "Got my free [Enter Product Description] Today" and that is unnecessary IMHO. They should have just bumped the original thread.
If a thread in either of those sections is dead (more than 2 months old) and the deal is off by replying with no good information your basically marking it for lock. By replying to a thread thats dead in any other section with no good information your setting yourself up for responses that will ultimately lock the thread. These responses include, but aren't limited to, "holy thread resurection Batman!" or "You realize you bumped a 4 month old thread"
One place that enjoys thread bumping is WLWC. Thats not to say go out and bump all the old threads, but everyone will shout repost if you start a new one. Bringing things that are funny back to life is always good.

As stated, it depends on the thread and what you have to add to it. Sometimes it's better to start a new thread and just quote the old thread without resurrecting the dead. What riles the mods/admins is pointless resurrection of a months old or even a year old thread and posting something that has no real impact other than to bump it to the top....this is considered spam and is dealt with accordingly....repeated offenses can lead to banning the 'spammer'.
