This guy disagrees - (and SO DO I) "I disagree with this assessment. It may have been somewhat agreeable in the 2017 timeframe, but since the release of AMD’s Ryzen processors, there has been a renewed excitement in the PC and PC Gaming continues to grow..."

"As it relates to the future of PC gaming, I’d also like to mention what the “big three” – Intel, AMD, and NVIDIA -- have coming down the pipeline that will likely entice current and new PC gamers." Lets bring it!

and if it Game Streaming takes over one day? Then that's the end for me. I mod / tweak about everything I play. From FOV, mouse/control fixes, texture packs and Reshade enhancements all to fix lazy ass devs shit jobs to full out modding. That will of course end with streaming, and the end of gaming period for me.

as consoles get more and more powerful I can definitely see more players shifting to consoles...with the next gen consoles supporting ray-tracing etc it looks like a decent setup...PC will always be more powerful but you also need developers willing to make PC a priority...unfortunately that isn't happening

Consoles might use ray-tracing as a new buzzword, but it won't mean anything this generation. Even with their custom APIs and all that the consoles will be nowhere near powerful enough to handle real-time ray tracing.

They shot their wad with 4k - which was never legit 4K60 but uprezzed bullshit - now they're looking to latch onto whatever buzzwords they can - raytracing, 8K, VR ("we really mean it this time"), all driven by a peashooter AMD APU yet again

Where did you even find this clickbait garbage? I made it four sentences and realized the guy is some idiot with a fake org trying to generate traffic. Look at the bottom of that JPR site for the address and Google it. It's the guy's house (or his parents house) in some residential neighborhood. And he's trying to charge $12,000 for an annual subscription to his brilliant "research".

I'm going to laugh myself batty on this one.

They primarily do stuff regarding GPUs and GPU tech. They're the folks that have talked about GPU shipments being down recently and all that stuff.
 
Guys this has nothing to do with financial forecasting.
When you have a low budget gaming PC the option is clear.

You can not spend $500 on a PC with the performance of 2160p at 60fps in 2020.

Many will do the console thing that it is not likely to hit the [H] demographic is pretty trivial.

Consoles will fill that gap easily when you have to be "rich" to get a gpu these days what other option is there (2020).
It is bound to cause more then a slight ripple effect...

Yes yes. We've heard this song and dance every generation for nearly thirty bloody years. New consoles come out and everyone cries doom and gloom for the PC industry only for the industry to get even bigger as time goes on. Let's be realistic here, last generation GPUs are perfectly fine for 99% of PC gamers. AMD's upcoming Navi, even if its only mid-range, will be perfectly fine for the vast majority of PC gamers.

especially since having a high end super-rig is rare...most people don't have 2080Ti's in their system...most people with 'gaming PC's' have lower to mid range systems...so for them a powerful next gen console would be an upgrade

It is not about that it is about how ecosystems work. The last consoles that came out were not even starting a new cycle they just came in as updates that is how much that has changed from the normal console cycle.

It is not about doom and gloom it is about realistic expectations and people that brush these things aside can not see the writing on the wall. People happy with PC will be still but it is not about them.

The last time a console launched were still talking about 1080p not even at 60 fps for most titles. Now that Sony and MS oversell their new hardware is also pretty normal but look at where it is going...

How many of us are gaming on 2160p? Not that many but look at what the whole world is gaming on that resolution and is still likely to be 1080p. The graphics increase for the money can not be denied as being good value for money.
The difference in money versus a PC system will make no sense to people when you need $1800 to play on 4K on the PC.

That is something which will change if consoles deliver (2020) and it won't kill the PC ecosystem but it will certainly grow the console ecosystem at a faster rate.

I highly doubt that number since the PC has a much wider share of games, modding, and generally a better experience.

You can build or buy a dirt cheap PC for the price of new console and get a similar (or better) performance result.
 
i switched to the pc a few years ago for gaming, im not switching back. i just upgrade bit by bit when i see something cheap but better than the hardware i already have, if i think i need to upgrade.


bonus i can still play most of the old pc games, if you switch consoles your lucky if they have any backwards compatability.

how much did sony and microsoft pay for this research because in my personal experience i've had more console only friends switch to PC then my PC only friends switching to consoles(aka none of them)..

PS4/5 and xbox are becoming more and more PC like which means there's less need for developers to continue to make console exclusive games anymore unless they're getting a huge chunk of change from sony or microsoft. also microsofts move to include what use to be xbox exclusive games in their windows store for PC will further shift people to PC and/or use both.

so yeah i call bullshit..
 
The young ones are addicted to cell phones not sure how many of those even have consoles let alone desktops.
 
I know a lot of folks who have switched to consoles. Makes sense to, they're cheaper and the majority of games are made specifically for them while the PC port is a lowly after thought.

As a matter of fact none of the younger gamers I know game on PC. They all game on console and so do all their friends.

Does that mean PC gaming is dead, of course not. But it is no longer king of the hill.
 
As a long time pc gamer , and gpu's hitting all time high prices ......., I had to try console..
Bought a ps4 and it's ok, but controls suck.......... guess If I could get use to that, or get
cheap reliable keyboard/mouse for ps4 , and I might use it more often.

As of now, I'll be using pcs for 90% of my gaming time........ Maybe the next gen. consoles will be good enough
for me to try again.

Not doing game streaming either...... not unless I can get at least 100mb download speeds and low ping times..
 
MS is adding native mouse and keyboard support to some of their newer unreleased titles. This is getting a lot of my console friends upset.

But I do feel the next Xbox will feel a lot more PC like.
 
I have hated consoles with a passion for years.. Expensive hardware, expensive software, clunky and Ad filled, paid online play, almost non-existent backward compatibility unless you buy a new copy.
Borderlands 3 twisted my arm for this.. Instead of buying on Epic and being forced to delay to get it on steam, I just bought it for XboxOne.. I only need 1 copy for me and my son untill this bullshit train is over with.

I hate it so much.. but Id rather not fragment my purchased games all over the god damn place...
Bonus, Later on ill sell my XBO BL3 and buy BL3 from a STEAM sale for 8$
 
I don't hate consoles, but I do dislike proprietary boxes. Gaming systems that aren't backwards compatible and overpriced games.

There are pros and cons to either setup, console or PC.
I had an Xbox 360 and a PS3 once upon a time. Seemed cool, but then you add in Xbox gold, and pain in the ass controllers, it just seemed a better situation for me, to just fire up a PC, which does a lot more than just play games.

What? Well, I don't have experience with Xbox since the early days of Xbox360. But my rebuttal to your hatred for consoles is based purely on my experience with Playstation and is below:

Hardware - it's not that expensive if you wait a bit to buy it or get it pre-owned.
Software - game prices are the same as PC ($60 new) Playstation has good sales through their store lately, games are on sale all the time on Amazon or Target, or, second hand purchases are cheap.
Clunky - Playstation isn't clunky. Not sure about Xbox. The interface on PS4 is simple.
Ad-filled - The only ads I see on the homescreen of the PS4 are under "what's new" and it'll tell me when a sale in the PS store is happening. Or, I open the PS store and it tells me what they recommend or is on sale. No ads for products that aren't Playstation related.

Paid online pay - I agree, it's BS. But getting it during black friday and the free games each month makes up for it.
Backward compatability. I was upset the PS4 didn't do this at first, but then, I looked at my gen1 PS3 which played PS1 & PS2 and I realized I haven't played any of those games for years. I still have it so if I get the urge I will, but, I haven't had that urge Since, well, shortly after I got my PS3.

How many people do you think do any resolution above 1080p today? not me, I run a 1060, and have a nice 144hz monitor. you really think it's going to change much in 1 year? I could easily afford it if I wanted to, but it's just not that important to me.

The difference between console gaming and PC gaming is less about resolution and more about controls and culture. I have a PS4, but it's used to stream Netflix and PS Vue 99% of the time.
 
I agree with OP 100%, if it becomes a "locked down experience (just cause streamed not for sure mean cannot mod), though if "consolized streaming/set box top that is 99% lockdown, though not need be)

Bethesda, Tripwire, some Valve quite a few others likely would still allow (it helps their bread and butter be better/promotes sales)
I am done, done, I will find something else to be doing.

We have a right to enjoy what we do without being "always connected" FFS .. stream to play solo drop in and out would be cool as hell, but ONLY if adjustable stuff, this way here you can swap out bad parts, adjust for your eyeballs etc...


The moment MSFT etc "clue in" as they should be for those folks like my brother (or me) who once was "a PC gamer" according to him (he never truly was living and breathing it for days on end with just enough time to shit, shower, shave, work, play, get 3-4 hour sleep, rinse, repeat, or me that I need the PC for "work" and "fun" (online banking, at home write document, spreadsheets etc......

sadly they do not see or ignore for some reason, I know for me, console, nah, I play here and there and love some games on them, but I am PC, at least until they truly "wisen the hell up" I not want 5 sony devices to play diablo, I want one device that can play diablo and numerous other things, allow me to reapir if breaks something,
 
Yeah well STEM education is further pushing children towards working specifically with PCs... and once you realize a console is simply a locked down PC, you have no need for a console unless there is a specific exclusive title that you want to play so badly that you are willing to fork over the extra money to get the console.

Besides, all games are eventually playable on a PC... emulation is a wonderful thing :).

All games, unless its an Xbox console. Somehow MS has made the OG Xbox and 360 incredibly hard to make emulators for. PS3 emulation is further along than either of those systems.
 
I'd only see see it happen if PC hardware continue to grow in cost and console prices remain roughly similar or see very mild increase and the PC game distribution portals becomes a race of exclusivity meanwhile console hardware keeps developing at such a pace 4k 60 FPS can become a thing which we won't move past for PC either for quite a while.

But it's entirely possible new generation grows a different kind of stance towards PC use, be it laziness or convenience of a console platform or whatever, difficult to predict youngster mentality. It's a possibility in the future a PC gets the "granny stamp".

Take piracy as a good example and how it has changed more recently, nowadays many kids are even too lazy to pirate stuff as there's more convenient online retail distribution options that would be worth paying for. I think PC gaming scene needs to focus on keeping PC gaming as convenient as possible.

The only thing that speaks for that PC gaming popularity won't be going away anytime soon is the growing business of e-sports which is the major player in keeping PC gaming healthy.

You make a distinction upon what you use your console for. I'm saying that the 2020 consoles will reel in more people due those specs.

Where people see monetary boundaries in PC gaming those will go away when you purchase a $500 console. People will save money for consoles on the PC it does not matter what you are saving in a year your video card purchase could be something that limits your performance. You don't have that with consoles the money you spend on it will seem way more of a better investment.

You buy hardware that holds value longer with a console. Not that people will abandon PC I'm saying that it is likely to happen that in 2020 people see 2160p gaming at 60 fps as something they can not afford on the PC . And that will draw them in.
 
LOL, no. Unless I can play with mouse / keyboard at 3840x1600, without upscale shenanigans and definitely not locked to 25 / 30 fps. Oh and ofc must be able to turn off motion blur depth of field and chromatic aberration and all such nonsensical effects. Oh don't worry I don't play PC games either where I can't turn these off.
 
I don't want to agree but there is a possibility of a big growth in console users.

Why? People are lazy as hell.

Also if consoles are using x86 then it should make backwards compatibility easier on next gen consoles. Not as great as PC-wise but enough to satisfy the lazy mass.

When consoles to legit 4k@60 PC's will be doing 4k @144htz +.

And soon 8k.

Consoles ain't doing ultra wide 1440.. that's what I like.

The big 2 for me is:

1. Using a mouse and keyboard!
2. Not paying a monthly/yearly membership to play online.

But speed and visuals is king on a pc.

Honestly I'd love to toss a grand at a console and call it a day.

Set it up on a desk and use a ultra wide screen with a mouse and keyboard.

Let me know when that all happens.

Edit: I'd like to add that I also own and xbox one,xbox one x, ps4,ps4 pro and a Nintendo switch. All that connected to a samsung 65" nu8000 tv. Keeps my 10 year old busy. But he also complains at times of wanting to use a pc keyboard and mouse to play fortnight better.

Now all that's fine for casual gaming but fps without a mouse sucks.

I'm not trying to make a stupid debate about PC vs console but generally if someone wanted to game at the most convenient way (the least amount of thinking and efforts involved) then they generally would go with picking up a console.

Most console gamers I know that doesn't play PC games aren't doing it as a cost factor but more of a convenience factor.

If you wanted to debate about cost then how about factoring how folks trade-in games to gamestop for almost nothing and buying used games for $5 less than new?

PC games are more often to go on sale than the console games counterpart.

Hell, by the time a console user buys their 6th or 7th game, they are already exceed the cost of a PC build.

There are folks still gaming on Sandy Bridge which came out 8 years ago with just an upgrade on the gpu. That is pretty much two console generations right there.

Also I highly doubt you will find a PS4 Pro (used) for $120 on ebay unless it was a scam.

I flipped a few PS4 Pros within the last few months and each were $300+ easily.

I play both console and PC games. With disregards to exclusives, if folks wants the most return and cost-effective then they go with PC gaming. For folks wanting the most convenient method of gaming, then they go with console gaming. Which goes back to my point that people are just getting lazier.

I think that gamers have aged a good bit and most of us are too old / busy to care much about PC gaming anymore. At least those of us that grew up in what I consider the golden age of pc gaming. I switched mostly to Xbox one x for the few games I do play the whole 2-3 hours/ week. The only thing on my PC at this point are games like desktop dungeon I can play while taking a break from work or other misc downtimes. So ya, I can see us moving more towards console as the consoles become more like pc's. At some point it's going to be hard for a layman to tell the difference.

I just passed 40. Make sure shy of 6 digits in South Florida. I can buy or build basically anything I want.

The only thing that keeps a gaming PC in my office is a mouse. That's it. Everything else is just more polished overall on a console but the fact is I really dig FPS games.

Give me real mouse support on a console and I'm done with PC gaming.
