replacing a dying Radeon HD 4850... equivalent performance?

just trying to get this PC rolling again, not upgrade it. Is there anything out there in the sub $75 range that has equivalent or better performance?

a R7-250 would be in that price range, and would perform better actually.
 
For AMD, you can score used HD 7850s on Ebay for <$80, HD 7770s and 7750s for even less.

Here's some benches of the 7750/7770/7850 cards vs the 4870
7750 vs a 4870
7770 vs a 4870
7850 vs a 4870

The 7750 is very equivalent to the 4870, so it'll be slightly superior to your 4850. Used 7750s and 7770s are going for $60-$70 on ebay. If you want to get a serious performance boost, but go full on your max ceiling expenditure limit, the 7850 will really provide you with some leg room. Going with the 7850 means you get that nice upgrade and don't really break your budget.

If you go new, you are looking at an NVidia GT 730 or R7-240... *maybe* also a R7-250.
The R7 240 is a rebranded HD8650 (which is a rebranded 6650)
The R7 250 is a rebranded HD8670 (which is a rebranded 6670)

Now, here are some benches of the 6670 vs the 4870.

As you can see, you are likely *downgrading* going with a R7 240/250. Yes, those benches are against a 4870, but the 4850 was not that much slower than the 4870, and the 4870 is more than a little bit quicker than the 6670 even.

I would honestly recommend you get a used 77xx / or 78xx card if you want to get your money's worth.

its good advice, i didn't bother mentioning used cards. Just new store bought ones.

the gap between the 4850 and the 4870 is a-lot bigger than you let out to be, remember hte difference in price for these cards was like 100$

From those 4850 vs 4870 benches then, the R7-250 would likely be on target with a 4850.. but the OP can do so much better! :)

That would be a a great deal for the $$$. A GTX650 is very equivalent to a HD7750 (or a R7 240/250), so if you're scoring that kind performance for ~$50 then you're definitely winning. Retail R7 240/250s are very near $100, and used 7750s / R7 240/250s are $60 and up.

However, I still recommend you grab a $75 7850 of Ebay. It obliterates the 650 and any of the 77xx cards or their analogues for only 20 bucks more.

It's really hard to recommend spending less than $120 on a video card. You'll actually be getting less for your money below that point.
