My girlfriends laptop has 10 malware/trojan files and I don't know what to do about removing them. I detected them by running windowsecurity.com/trojanscan but I don't know where to go from there. I ran HijackThis v1.99.1 but I couldn't find the directories that the trojanscan listed. What do I need to do?

Here is her HijackThis report in case anyone can tell me what I can safely remove:

Once you have read the above
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [{00-00-0A-A4-ZN}] c:\windows\system32\dwdsregt.exe FI002

Those need to be deleted (odds are you'll have to do it in safemode)

Great thank you. I ran trojanscan again and I'm still getting Trojans in the following:

Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\0T278PMJ\installer_251[1].exe
Local Settings \Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\97WI4ZL4\emg2[1].exe
Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\97WI4ZL4\stubNsbg[1].exe
C:\Program Files\Common Files\InetGet2\mc-110-12-0000080.exe

Adware:
Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\KT2ZCTY7\ZIFI002[1].exe
C:\Windows\system32\dwdsregt.exe
C:\Windows\system32\owinosap.exe
C:\Windows\system32\qwinrsap.exe
C:\Windows\system32\rndsregj.exe
C:\Windows\system32\ZIFI002.exe

I've got AVG on there, Spybot S&D, and Ad-Aware SE. What else should I add to help keep her computer safe?

Before scanning anything....do two things.
Turn off XP System Restore
Download and run CCleaner. It does a great job of deleting temp and internet junk files...which is where many trojans live, as you noticed. Often you'll find it removes from several hundred to a couple of gigs of junk...which can shave substantial times off of your antimalware scans.

Use your various removal tools in safe mode.

I like using
Adaware..update, scan, remove
Spybot Search and Destroy..update, immunize, scan, remove
Microsoft Antispyware...update, scan, remove, go into advanced tools, system explorer, check for and remove unwanted entries in BHO, LST, hosts, browser toolbars, then reset IE to default settings.
Spysweeper...pretty much the best antiadware program out there..however it's not free...BUT..you can download and use a 15 day trial. After a few days of scanning with it, uninstall it.
Online scans at trendmicro (housecall) and Kaperky.
All windows updates
Try another browser like FF, or my favorite..Opera.

Can you tell me what to look for, I'm not very familiar with that stuff, or would it be safe to post a screenshot of the entries and you can tell me what to remove?

If you're not sure always ask for advice. Screen shots would be fine.

Screenies are fine if you feel like it, however the Microsoft Antispyware does a lot of handholding for you too.

thanks for all your help guys, after doing what you've all recommended I was finally able to get her laptop cleaned out :D

occasionally she still gets a pop-up ad out of nowhere and the frame of the ad has the IE logo on the top left corner. Is there something I can do to do away with these all together? Ad-Aware SE doesn't find anything, neither does Spybot S&D, Ewido is finally giving me a clean report, as is AVG. What might be causing these ads to still show up?

edit: I've got her using the latest version of Firefox now (as of today) as her default browser, but the ads that pop-up still come from IE.

Did you run CCleaner and run online scans at TrendMicro and Kapersky?

Post another HJT since you've cleaned.

CCleaner removed quite a bit.

For some reason TrendMicro wouldn't load, I'm guessing something with the Java, and I haven't tried Kaspersky yet. I installed Java VM on her laptop and it's loading now, just let me know if it should be run in safe mode or not.

Here is her current HJT:

TrendMicro HouseCall did not find any potential threats on her computer (I didn't run it in safe mode)

Still getting popups but nothing else right?

Does anyone else on this board know if WeatherBug is still crapping up systems with spy/adware? Because everything else looks clean.

Right. Ad-Aware runs clean, so does Spybot S&D as well as AVG and ewido (I ran them after a normal start-up and in safe mode to be 100% sure). If that's the case I'll just run another HijackThis and remove weatherbug.

edit: Just found this online
"WeatherBug is an software program powered by AWS WeatherNet that provides weather updates (for American cities) from a small icon in the systray. WeatherBug gives you current weather conditions, your local weather report, and storm alerts, however the free version is ad-supported containing both banner and pop-up ads. In some cases, it installs the My Search toolbar. Currently there are two versions of Weatherbug, a version 5 and a version 6."

Looks like WeatherBug is getting the boot

EDIT: removing weatherbug through HJT in safe mode didn't seem to fix it. There are still IE pop-up ads when Firefox is open.
