Reloading 3g Ipod

I put a new HDD in my 3g ipod
I go through the Itunes motions,
it tells me to plug into wall, battery dies
thats all she wrote..

Now I was able to squirt power into the battery but now all I get its the little plug in icon.
Wont charge, wont play, nada...

**I manually charged battery, so ipod should have had reson to need to be recharged.

and suggestions?

**When the 10gb hdd died, i opted for a 20gb one since you cant get new 10gb HDDs anymore

Did you check to see if the battery was reinstalled correctly?

I was thinking that if some one has a G3, can zip up the OS files and send it to me
I do this to restore video ipods and it seems to work, perhaps itl work for this G3
