Reformatting...good reasons to upgrade to W8 for gaming?

It's that time of the year to reformat.

I primarily use my PC for gaming and do light encoding on the side if needed. Other than that its all standard fare (videos, porn, music, etc).

Any reason to go with Windows 8 over Windows 7 given my uses? I wouldn't mind trying something new but, ya know, Windows 7 just works and I know it works.

Thoughts? Thanks!

Gaming benchmarks have showed that 7 and 8 are identical +/- 1-2%. Windows 8 runs about the same amount of services and memory as 7 does, so I don't expect it to be faster in processing. 8 does however scale down very well, even better than 7. People with old computers (Pentium D/Centrino/Athlon - with 1GB of ram) that have 7, may get a performance boost going to 8.

On a modern rig, you would pick Windows 8 if you wanted the feature set. Keep in mind that they have also removed some multimedia capabilities from 8 though.

So basically if you are a PC gamer just stick with 7 then? Hmmm...might TRY 8 just because I can :p

I don't think theres anything for you to gain from moving to Win8 for gaming.. In fact, you're better off staying with Win7 for now. Better driver support and known compatability with games.

In my mind there's no reason not to upgrade. There is no reason to upgrade, either. So basically, it comes down to this: Do you plan on upgrading to Win8 in the future? If so, might as well do it now, because the license can be had for $40 ($15 if you're willing to lie) as opposed to the much larger amount later.

There is ZERO reason to upgrade to Windows 8 especially with that godawful Metro UI.

From what I have been reading, some have had better compatibility with windows 8. Of course, that depends on your hardware and the software you are running in the background.

I would say go for it, you have nothing to loss. I have it on my dual screen work laptop, my tablet and will being going to it on my desktop when a couple of software programs are made to work with Windows 8. (Dataplex caching software specifically.)

lol @ this post. what a joke

anyways.

for gaming there are no benefits to moving to W8. In fact I have a couple games that dont work although I am sure thats origin/EA's fault if anything. Everything else works great. There are other reasons I upgraded however gaming is not one of them.

I just recently upgraded both my son's and my own rig with windows 8. I didn't have a need or even a really good reason other than I wanted to try it out. My son is using the UI quite a bit, but I am not. I basically have the normal desktop with most of my icons just like in windows 7. There are a few things I like on the backend of the OS, but as I'm old, I'm not liking the new user interface.

The next test will be on my wife's rig, as I'm building her a new one this weekend and will install 8 on a new hard drive in a new system, to see if she likes it. I did get her a touchscreen monitor though...

Actually, one of the reasons I want to do Win8 on my gaming rig is that for my personal gaming the desktop is basically useless (I tend to play my games in full-screen) so to me having a screen full of tiles with my games on them makes sense.

Once my game is running the Start screen can look like whatever it wants, since I won't see it.

A serious gamer should probably wait for a few months for the driver support to mature. Still a lot of hardware that lacks proper support. Amd for example has droped all support for pre 5xxx hardware in Win8 drivers.

Then again you can try it for free which is the only reason I installed it on an older gaming box also. It works surprisingly well despite the lack of a proper driver. Win8 is also a tweakers dream, never before has there been so much bloat on the background to disable! :)
