Redditor Archived Nearly 2 Million GBs of Porn to Test Amazon's Unlimited Cloud Storage

Well, some one had to do it, for science -- of course. A reddit user by the name of beaston02 decided to take things into his own hands by archiving almost 2 million gigabytes of porn to test Amazon's supposed unlimited Cloud Storage. That's about 1.8 petabytes or the equivalent of 293 years of viewing pleasure to make sure the company is keeping to its words. Why he did it? It was to help with his coding by writing scripts in Python used on various camsites and learning SQL databases.

"It is nearly entirely porn," he told me in a Reddit message. "Ever since I got into computers, I found myself learning more, and faster when it was something more interesting. Call me crazy, but women interest me more than most other things on the internet and there is a huge amount of data being created daily, so it was a good fit for the project."

Amazon had to know about this. I used to work on a server team at a corporation with no data quotas. We server guys would work weekends to expand the drive space to accommodate growth with minimal impact to the customer. We knew exactly the customers who were using the most space and requiring our work on the Distributed File System shares.

When you think how much time and energy was afforded by Amazon for this no value experiment, it's actually not heroic one iota. What did he prove, besides waste? That one guy probably cost Amazon multiple millions of dollars. SANs are not cheap, redundant backup solution for 2 Petabyte? I have no experience dealing with data of that size, but to service one customer's whim to that extent is absurd. Amazon will have to change that policy.

I agree with you..........maybe they should take the world "unlimited" literally and understand what the impact would be before they use it. If your going to market something as unlimited......then they shouldn't complain when some knucklehead tries to find that limit.....on their dime. I doubt he did anything more than download links directly from streaming sites into his account. Or maybe it's just uncompressed multi-angle 8k livestream of him pleasuring himself 24/7. So all he achieved was killing Amazon Cloud Drive, consuming tons of bandwidth, electricity and he didn't even get any cryptocurrency out of it in the end. I guess it wasn't people using Cloud Drive to store encrypted plex libraries after all.

Finally got them all uploaded 4 months later earlier this year only to have Amazon tell me i'm fucked. So Im' under contract now for an internet service for a few more years, and I'm still trying to find an alternative. Anyone have any suggestions?

Corporate storage teams don't use consumer sata drives. They use enterprise drives. Quintuple that $200 figure at least -- and that's just the drives.

Sounds like it's a business use. You can store that in Amazon Glacier for $170 a month. You can rent one of their 50TB snowball boxes for a couple hundred dollars (for 10 days, $15/per additional day), and transfer your files over 10g instead of uploading over the network. They'll then ship it back for upload to S3/glacier. After that, just incremental uploads. If you want cheaper, you might look at backblaze, since you're already paying for your ISP. I haven't used them however so I don't know if there are any gotchas.

So far they say they are keeping free photo storage and they recognize the thumbs in my Raw files so they were freely stored before. Videos aren't stored :/ I was looking into backblaze as someone else suggested. I have not tried them either and they have an all or nothing approach but if you have a vault machine in your business it's not a bad catch at all. Their newly advertised features are nice too.

I have no idea if I'm going to continue with photography as a hobby or not but just over this weekend I was looking for lager laptop drives as I'm at 1.04TB on my 1.5TB seagate. I know it isn't exactly equivalent but when I think about buying (a respectable) cheap drive every year, loading the stuff I've made that year on to it and putting it back in it's box and off into the closet somewhere is cheaper than online storage, I start to think about giving that a try instead.

At my prime for photography I only shot about 700 gigs a year with 150,000 photos per year. I think a 4tb drive will probably be fine for you, but I would get 2 for redundancy. I won't lie there's a lot of photos I've lost form my early days, and it sucks. I was the victim of IBM'S deathstar and Seagates 1.5 tb debacle.
