Red team fan had to go Green. :D

Feel lucky you chose now to get go green. A few months ago you would have been pulling your hair out with the driver issues that were going on. One day I had about 20 driver crashes on my 980ti. Hopefully they don't make new drivers unstable again.

Yeah, Nvidia has not always had a good track record when it comes to new operating systems upon release. I will probably stick with the latest driver that I have installed unless I need something out of the newer ones. I have to say, the Nvidia Control panel is pretty barren and basic compared to the Crimson one.

3 months? 6 months? 9 months? 12 months? Do we have any solid information other than maybe sometime next year? Nope.
No firm dates but AMD and nV are both reliant on TSMC and that means Q3-ish 2016 is a realistic time expectation for a 16nm high end GPU. HBM2 + a significant process shrink means you can expect large gains over current top end GPU's. I'd be surprised if we didn't get a 30%+ performance improvement at the minimum. 40-50% wouldn't be unreasonable to expect really since they'll be nearly doubling the number of transistors and feeding them with gobs of bandwidth and GPUs do work that is retardedly parallel anyways.

The 980Ti is a nice card, and certainly a step up, but IMO you should've held on to your 290X for a while longer. I'm still using a 290 non-X and I've yet to be disappointed with the drivers or performance with a 1440p monitor.

Although I respect your opinion, I simply did not want to wait until next September or later to be able to play at 4k resolutions better than I already had been. Besides, I have already sold and shipped the 290 and Newegg does not give refunds. :) I will simply be able to enjoy this card for a couple of years just like I have the past cards I purchased.

Also, at least in the games and benchmarks I have tried so far, the 980 Ti blows away the 290 / 290x. :D Also, if I find myself in more of a need, I will just purchase another Ti and SLI them and they will still run cooler and quieter than the 390 Crossfire ever did.

The 980ti is s beast of a card. Enjoy! I'd stay away from multiGPU if you can. Check out the SLI compatibility thread if you need convincing. http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1884345

These thread titles always remind me of porn for some reason. "Red team fan had to go Green."

I'm a Red team fan but I see nothing wrong with going 980 TI.

Heck if I had a spare grand I'd grab a 980 TI Kingpin. Nothing beats a TI boosting to 1600+ core clock.

I hope AMD doesn't die. Having gone with Nvidia and G-Sync after buying ATI/AMD for some years, the difference in user experience is so much better with Nvidia than I ever had with AMD even when they weren't doing quarterly driver releases. I need AMD to stay alive so Nvidia doesn't jack the prices to hell, but damn if I'm not glad to be on the other side of the fence.

Just ordered a 4k monitor so we'll see how well my setup handles it. I ended up not grabbing the 390x as I just couldn't justify that cost compared to what I could get a 390 for. A site does have the PowerColor Devil R9 390x for about $340. Pretty good price for a hybrid cooling gpu.

I find myself in a similar position. Having just built a new 6700k rig, I find myself looking at a 980TI as an update over my 290. I don't want a 390 or a Fury, and I've been ATi/AMD since the first Radeon back in 2000.

@Violator - If you've already got a 290 and haven't overclocked it, you should consider doing this and waiting for next-gen, whether Nvidia or AMD. With HDMI support coming for Freesync, and better monitors being released for it as well, it's become a fairly viable alternative.

With a video card upgrade comes interest in upgrading one's monitor as well, and you may find yourself locked into an ecosystem you don't want to be in 6-8 months down the road. Such is the problem with G-Sync vs Freesync, currently.

Thanks for the info :) I have already mildly overclocked it and unfortunately the heat and noise is ridiculous. 94C playing a fairly demanding game and the fan ramps up to 48-50 which is pretty loud. The fact it can't give me more than about 35FPS in Witcher 3 at 1440 is a primary concern, I don't want to have to compromise visual quality.

Grab a water cooled 980 Ti like this one and start gaming in bliss would be my suggestion. If you sell your 290 on the market place, the difference in cost won't be too bad.

While that does indeed look lovely, I fear the price over here in the UK would be astronomical for something like that. A standard air-cooled MSI 980TI here costs about £550.

Damn and with another 20% for VAT that almost comes out to be the price for Titan X. I feel for ya Brits.

It's not quite that bad ;), the £550 includes VAT. All the same, most of the time we can take the price we see in $ and it's pretty much what we'll pay in £

Is your 4K one of the Samsung TVs? Then you can enjoy the benefits of HDMI 2.0 as well.

Nope but, that would be really nice as long as I was sitting back 10 feet from it. :) However, I am using the Samsung 28 inch 4k monitor (TN Panel which looks really good) and I am seating about 2 feet from it or so.

Monitor will be here in two days. Excited! I'm still extremely unsure of what to do about my gpu solution. This last week I've been running into a lot of screen tearing and my games getting minimized every so often. While monitoring temps on my Asus 290x xfire I hit 94c in roughly 15 minutes even when running fans at 100% I'm really not sure if I should just keep using them, sell them, or RMA. I do not feel comfortable doing a custom loop and I'd rather put the money towards a 980ti anyways. [H], guide me to the right path!

With Asus RMA, I am not sure I would recommend that. Also, would you be allowed to reapply your thermal paste without voiding the warranty?

Sounds like you need more case airflow. Reference cards or aftermarket coolers? If you don't have a side panel fan, that's the best way to reduce gpu temps. What case are you running?

If you ordered a 4k monitor, a single 980ti will still leave you wanting more. 290x crossfire will perform better by a good bit, when it works properly. Honestly i'd just try and make it till the new gpus come out. There is no single card for acceptable 4k game yet, other than maybe the 295x2 (but that's just a dual gpu single card)

To my knowledge once you remove the cooler that voids warranty. I'll have to double check later when off work.

Asus aftermarket coolers. Running a Phanteks Enthoo Pro windowed case. And I agree about the gpus. That's why I really want to make it work. I just really do not like the temps!

I forgot to mention, I have all 7 case fans hooked up to the hub for the case. My mb, Gigabyte Z97 Gaming 7, does not have a good fan controlling software. I was also thinking of getting a controller. Also was thinking of how I could position fans inside the case to blow directly onto the gpus. I could just get a couple of Kraken G10s and some H55s and call it good as well.

So as a follow-up to my previous post, given that I currently have a Radeon 290, coupled with a 6700K @ 4.6, is a 980Ti a good bet for a reasonable amount of time? I don't plan to go above 1440 for a while yet.

What is the 290 playing like at 1440p now?

With older stuff, fine. I've been holding off on Witcher 3 until I built the new rig, and at 1440 with nice visuals, it's trundling along at 30-35 FPS, with not much going on. There's a couple of other games I've got into more recently too that tank a bit at higher visuals.

Basically I think the 290's done me OK (had it 2 years) but now I want to move up a grade.

I think that if you went with a 980 Ti, you would be very pleased with the results. I have been doing 4k on my games and although I cannot get 60 fps maxed out on newest games at the res, I can get between 45 and 60 and the games still look good at reduced settings. (Batman: AK, Assassins Creed: Syndicate and Crysis 3 is just 3 examples of that.)

At 1440p, you could come close to maxing at 60fps I think. Check out the 980 Ti articles on this board since they use The Witcher 3 at 1440p for one of their game benches. I recommend the EVGA 980 Ti FTW since it has1190 / 1290 speeds and has been boasting up to 1390 speeds.

Well, I have been playing games more often now including the newest one for me, Assassins Creed: Syndicate. :D I know there are some here who are going to wonder what is wrong with me when I say I have been using my XBox 360 wireless controller more almost exclusively compared to my gaming keyboard and mouse but, it just feels more relaxing that way. :) I have been receiving almost twice the frames per second on this card over the 290x I was using at the same settings. (Crossfire was faster when it worked, though.)

Right now, there is no way I could justify spending another $650 on a second 980 Ti but, I would love to anyways. :D Seems to me, though, that the industry is a lot more tight lipped this time around about the future graphics cards then they have been in the past. We will see, I guess. :)

Thanks for that, about what I'd expect. Just need to pick one now.
