The plan to mod the entire map for Red Dead Redemption into GTA V along with additional content, complete with graphical improvements, is now officially dead. Hmm, I wonder if this had anything to do with the fact that Rockstar is currently working on a new RDR game. In before “Take-Two Interactive is corporate scum.”

A video for the map mod, dubbed Red Dead Redemption V, was posted yesterday and subsequently pulled after the modding team was contacted by either Rockstar, or Take-Two, as it wasn’t specified. We’re going with Take-Two though because Rockstar is a subsidiary of the company. “I know this is hard pill to swallow, but as you may have noticed we did get contacted, and we sadly have to say we are stopping this project,” said .White’s Mr. Leisurewear on the forums. “So thanks guys, but it isn’t going to happen, sorry.” The team’s plan was to mod the entire map for Red Dead Redemption into GTA5 along with additional content, complete with graphical improvements.

Never, ever announce your mod project until it's already done.

Why, so you can release it and have to pull the files/development, forcing it into the gray market for mods after a cease & desist?

Sounds like a good way to do a ton of work and have it get burried really fast.

You should expect this to happen when you strip out content of another game and put it into another as a mod, clearly it's not legal but im curious to why rockstar didn't go after other mods for gta v that do the exact same thing like the vice city map

What will a cease & desist do if you release it to the internet and are not hosting it from a site.

And it lives on as a torrent?

Who's to say Rockstar isn't going to clean it up and release it? Maybe pay the guys for all the effort put into it.

+1

Unless the modders were intending to make money as they create the mod, it would have been better to just finish it then release.

Striesand effect much?

Because a C&D is ineffective if the project is already in the wild and being hosted by parties outside of yourself.

The Nintendo Mod community does it this way these days. Here's an example:

Because the suits get an itchy trigger finger whenever they see someone trying to plug a market hole they left open.

And RDR on PC is one of the hugest market holes in gaming today.

It's not necessarily mean they're planning to release RDR content for the PC any time soon, it doesn't mean they even plan to do it ever.

Their thinking is simply: "What if we decide to make a PC version in the distant future, and this project would mean 0.01% less sales for that project?" SHUT IT DOWN, SHUT IT DOWN NOOOOOW!

And that's what makes them corporate scum.

Who's to stop them from finishing it on their own anyway and releasing it underground?

Too bad, could have been free publicity for Take Two's new RDR.
They've got plenty. It's certainly one of the most anticipated sequels in my lifetime (besides HL3) .

I can see all downsides and no upsides for Take Two in letting the mod live. It's not going to mean any surge in new GTA5 sales, while it creates confusion, muddies RDR2's marketing messaging, and steals publicity cycles now mere weeks before the official RDR2 unveiling at E3.

Realize they've got hundreds of millions riding on RDR2's carefully orchestrated marketing campaign and strategy, and don't want it fucked with by anyone. The timing of this mod couldn't have been worse.

Bungie and Rockstar will never release any info on their upcoming games until like two weeks before release date.
Element of Surprise.

Another one that gets the ax. If I had the skills to pull this off the best way to go about it is to not say or post a damn thing. You should release it on the torrents, then after that, announce it. In this way even if they send you a cease & desist notice it's too late it's already up to download and will always be there. This should go to all future modders. Or if you like post it using the Tor browser, the dark web :D You can just put links up there.

i guess they don't remember what happened when some other enterprising modders tried to make map mod to play gta vice city on gta v.

Once it's done and released, people will have it and there's no going back. Even if they pull it, once it's on the internet it's there forever.

Take-Two Interactive is corporate scum

Or just running a business and being legally required to protect their IP. But children never see the business side.

Also wasn't the most brilliant move to call this alleged mod "Red Dead Redemption V".

Here's what grinds my gears about GTA V (on PC).

GTA V has 2 distinctive parts. The local Story mode and the Online mode.

For Story mode there is a very healthy and active community of modders because the game engine is fantastic. But the game does not natively allow mods, it has to be lightly hacked every time there is a patch in order to make the mods work again.

But the problem I have is that Rockstar patches the game like every 1-2 months and it breaks the mods....yet.....not a damn thing is ever added to the Story side of the game. It's all for the online stuff, for which you can't use mods in (and you get banned if you try). And the patches are big too....just did one a couple weeks ago for about 800MB and it had zero impact on the Story mode.

It's like they are saying, hey we don't give a shit about the people that don't partake in microtransactions.....but we still are gonna fuck with ya.
