Hi,

I'm installing a pair of GF 9800 GX2's into a new system I'm building. I plan to use them for Folding@Home.

I have an Antec TPQ-850 (850 watt) power supply. Will that be able to handle both those two (2) GX2's, four (4) WD Raptor 74 gb HD's, and an Intel Q9650 cpu?

What about three (3) GF 9800 GX2's? What kind of wattage will that need, 1000?

Thx

.

i think you cant tri-sli 9800gx2

as for wattage you might need to get 1000w so you will give about 50-70% on your PSU for longer life

It was w/using three (3) GX2's that I was concerned about.

Any recommendations for a 1000 watt power supply?

Huh, and it worked fine, you say? Well then ignore my previous advice. I was going off from the Corsair PSU finder. Entered in your specs and Corsair recommended the Corsair 1000HX for your system. Though I suspect it's because Corsair does not have a PSU in the 800W to 950W range.

Either way, the other system I posted is still evidence enough that 750W is enough for a decent system with three GX2s.

the reason if you push PSU at 100% load all the time it will give PSU very short life

I work on ~200 watts from the wall per GX2 card folding.
That works out ~160 watts from the PSU.
So 3 cards will be pulling close to 500 watts.
I'd add 50-100 watts if your not CPU folding, 100-150 watts if you are.
I'd call it around 600-650 watts.
So its do-able on a 850 watt PSU but you close to the limit.

My quad GX2 pulls ~900 watts from the wall, that around 700 watts from the PSU.
Thats without any CPU folding.

Luck .......... :D

I'd be running four (4) WD Raptors as well as RAID 0. So that will eat up some power.

To run Fold@Home w/peak performance, using three (3) GX2's, is my Q9650 quad core cpu an overkill? Will a dual core do just as well, w/no performance lost?

How about for hard drives, are using four (4) WD Raptors in RAID 0 an overkill here too, running Folding@Home? Would one work out just as well?

I've also got a dual core AMD 4400+ cpu w/an Asus A8N32-SLI m/b collecting dust. Would running two (2) GX2's on that work out just as well as running them on a system w/an Intel Q9650 cpu, w/an appropriate m/b?

Sorry for the questions, and thanks.

A dual-core will work just as well, as long as it's a decent one. An E4500 or E5200 would be the minimum I'd suggest for three GX2s.

Hard drive speed is insignificant for F@H. If this is a dedicated box, just stick in any drive you have laying around.

I don't know if an A64 X2 would be fast enough to handle four GPU clients at full capacity. I would personally leave it at one client per core, so I'd limit it to either one GX2 or two single-GPU cards like 8800GS/9600GSOs.

Thanks again.

My two (2) GX2's are arriving tomorrow. As for a thrid one, Newegg ran out of them again before I could order it. :(

Have a local Fry's Electronics, so I'll check there this weekend for a m/b before ordering one. I'll also check on a 1000 watt power supply and dual core cpu there as well.

Finally, I'll use just one hard drive w/the setup then.

Like I said earlier, a 1000W PSU is not necessary for what you're planning. Take a look at the second link I posted above. Kendrak is pulling around 530W from the PSU.

This is for running three (3) GX2's, if I can get that third one.

Picked up an EVGA 780i m/b, w/a Thermalright Ultra 120 HSF Saturday, and got the system up and running w/two (2) GX2's. Waiting for my third GX2, which is in transit from Newegg.

I set them up the two (2) in SLI, w/no problems, running beta driver 180.70. I'm getting a 3DMark06 of 14xxx, w/my 3.0 GHz Q9650 CPU. Nothing is tuned, or overclocked.

Any idea what I should get w/3DMark06, w/my dual GX2's in SLI, and what is possible?

Thx.
