Recommendations on learning two independent, yet connected, topics

I'd like to learn more about AD and all of the AD services that Windows Server 2008 R2 or 2012 or 2012 R2 has to offer.

I'd also like to learn about VPN connections, how to set them up, what software/hardware you need, etc.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I have a Dell T430 server at home to play with. I think only 8GB of RAM, but it can create VMs.
I also have unused machines that I can use to create an Untangle box or pfSense box. Or, I'm willing to spend some money on a hardware firewall if you think that's the way to go.

Do you have any idea of the hardware or software you may be using in the future for VPNs, or is this just something to put on a resume?

Just something to put on a resume and learn for myself.

I'm thinking SonicWALL but I'm up for anything in the beginning.
