Right now I'm running a D-Link DGS-1024D and am less than impressed.

I'm looking to replace it with something that supports jumbo frames. Management doesn't need to be very robust since it will just be the backbone for my home network.

Another nice feature would be noise since the switch would be in my home office.

Since my budget isn't tremendous ($300-$500), I've been looking at these two switches:

Unmanaged HP that supports jumbo frames and uses passive cooling

D-Link managed switch that supports jumbo frames:

Netgear managed switch that supports jumbo frames:

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have a GS716T (16 port version of the GS724T) and it works phenomenally well.

I'm kind of leaning towards the HP J9078A right now. I can get it for $246 shipped.

The more I read about the managed features of some other models, the more and more it seems I don't need them.

The most that would ever be happening on my home network is email and web requests (seldom) coming in through my Linux router to my server, media streaming from my file server to one of my PCs, and someone surfing the web wirelessly.

Does anyone have anything positive or negative to say about the HP J9078A ProCurve 1400-24G?

For $20 more you can have a web managed switch. Dell 2724. I have mine sitting right in front of me and I cant hear it at all.

I saw that on their website, too.

Shipping and tax actually brings it to $300 so about $54 more than the HP.

I just don't think I'll ever use the management features.

I'd go with the Procurve all the way (actually, I have......several times :D ), either the 1400 or 1800 series if you want a little more in the features department. The Dell switches IIRC are just rebranded SMC's.

Great switch, quiet, jumbo frame support, and a killer warranty. And it's fairly cheap to boot....It's a no brainer for me.

OK 2 things.

HP's warrante can't be beat (lifetime on most network equipment)

I see that you have a VMWARE box, and it looks like you mess around a bit. One of the management features I have used on my Dell 2724 is the Vlan function. If you ever want to test out firewalls, routing, or any other cross network connectivity, creating a seperate VLan andplugging in a couple of ports sure beats adding another switch.

Procurve if I were you. I've done Dell Gig switches and had auto-sensing problems with them.

The HP warranty is the bomb too.

I have got the linksys srw2024 for the lan here and aside from the noisy fan its great.
