Recent games? Nope. But Independence War 2 may fit the bill. It's more of a piracy space-sim than a trading sim, but the combat is solid. And it still stands up, even though it's almost 20 years old.

Granted you mentioned X series having a steep learning curve, but X4 comes out in 2 days. Not sure how much its learning curve is changed good or bad since the previous ones. but it could be worth checking out reviews after its released

Oh ffs. Do developers really think Epic won't jack their cut up once they've undercut Steam (if they're succesful)?

With the amount of money they're raking in from Fortnite they can keep it up for a long time. My issues with the Epic Store are twofold: exclusivity does not promote competition and right now it's pro-developer but at the cost of being anti-consumer.

I'm mainly concerned that Outlaw wont get enough exposure on the Epic Store. I guess with Fortnite, Epic does have massive user base so that could be advantageous for them. Either way, I really like Double Damage games as a developer and will plonk down my 30 bucks regardless of their e-commerce platform.

Yeah, they kinda lost a day-of-release purchase from me. Steam, Blizz and GOG--- that's my current limit.

I don't think we'll be seeing a Q1 release, but looking at the Rebel Galaxy twitter account, it sounds like they are deep in development mode.

Love the reference maps :) Gives me nostalgia for 90's gaming

I'm not going to let the fact it's on Epic store prevent me from making a purchase. To be honest, practically all major publishers have their own launchers / stores in some form or another. I honestly don't see it as that big of a deal.

Exactly. At this point in time the only way you're not seeing it is if you actively bury your head in sand, put your hands on your ears, and shouting la la la la la at the top of your lungs.

Why are people acting like this is new information? It was revealed as an Epic Store exclusive during the Game Awards. The only thing new here is that the deal is only for a year and that they game isn't exclusive forever.

As for the Epic Store. Eh. The Store itself is fine. Not great, not bad, just fine. Epic, the company, raises some concerns.

That doesn't mean it is not new information to them. Not everyone watches the game awards. Which is a shit show anyway.
So far every deal was for 12 months that I know of. That's the only kind of deal they seem to be making. And frankly it makes no difference. I'm not waiting 12 months for any game.

What is concerning is that epic is acting in bad faith of the customers. They don't give a damn about you the consumer, they made that perfectly clear. And I'm not going to support such a company in any way. And I consider not supporting any developer signing such an anti-consumer deal, even after the exclusivity period expires.

There's no MP component to Rebel Galaxy at all- so I don't mind waiting 12 months. Most games improve dramatically a year down the line versus their initial release versions anyways.

That part that bothers me about the Epic store is no mod integration. The devs have expressed intentions for mod support so I hope Epic's exclusivity hasn't changed that.

Steam Workshop support would be nice, but as long as RG: Outlaw allows modable content to be added from hosting sites like modDB, I will be happy.

Epic had just detailed their roadmap and mod support was part of it.

Here's a snippet of their mission scripting code:

    Code:
    [EVENT]
    [CONDITION]
      <STRING>TYPE:FLAG
      <FLOAT>VALUE:10
    [/CONDITION]
    [CONDITION]
      <STRING>TYPE:SHIPEXISTSINFLATED
      <INTEGER>ID:8
    [/CONDITION]
      <FLOAT>DELAY:1
      <INTEGER>ID:8
      <STRING>TYPE:PLAYCOMMFROMSHIP
      <STRING>STRINGVALUE2:MARLAMISSION2_6
      <INTEGER>SETFLAG:13
    [/EVENT]
Looks to be in a fairly user friendly format.

I feel slightly less enthused about RGO after watching half of the gameplay video; even though this is clearly a throwback to Privateer. RGO is a game I would've gone ape over in 2001. Just not sure about 2019.

And I found the in-game radio stations really distracting.

I hear what you're saying. It really hit me in the nostalgia feels, and too be honest, it's EXACTLY what I've been looking for since Freelancer. Remember this is an indie game too.

The radio stations are 100% customizable and also you can disable the stations for general in-game soundtrack.

Another 3 hour stream! It covers a lot that was already in the previous stream, but still good.

I understand the spite, but my need for this game far outweighs my silly disdain for another "launcher". :)

It looks like we're in the final stretch! Game is complete, they are just waiting for translations to come back and to make any necessary modifications to the chat box UI. It's looking amazing :D

    Some recent updates:

Oh yeah, also OG Rebel Galaxy is free for a week :)

I guess they are using different views, the first video had a cockpit view then the others had a third person view. The cockpit view reminded me quite a bit of the old Wing Commander / Privateer games. The customization (at least for the look of the ship) is looking pretty good. Too bad its on Epic Games Store though...

Meh, idc about epic, but I also don’t care to add another platform to my PC. Maybe Epic will get a killer game to tempt me, but CDPR is already on GoG so good luck with that :)

    Quarterly thinking is universal anyway.

It isn't necessarily being about anti-Epic, it is more anti-exclusivity. It is also about wanting a game that is supposedly to be very mod friendly on the format that already has a well established and supported mod community. One could also say you could get over people not being fans of Epic or wanting games to be available on their platform of choice rather than having to use a different platform for no real reason.

I don't mind waiting out 12 months of exclusivity. I'll be playing it on Steam sometime in 2020.

You have to draw limits. There's a neat TV show about an alternate history space race called For All Mankind that's premiering exclusively on AppleTV- (only on the AppleTV+ service and on AppleTV devices) Doesn't mean I'm going to buy a $150 box just to watch this show. You have to draw limits.

Yup, between this and Phoenix Point it just means I have to wait a lot more time. Part of what makes XCOM so great right now is the massive amount of mod customization. I am hoping for the same kind of thing in Phoenix Point and Steam has shown itself to be the best platform for that so far. So my disappointment is having to wait to play the games, not that I wouldn't support the company making the game.
