Should I RMA my card? It is doing a really loud coil whine sound during 3dmark11 and a little bit less when playing games.

Sometimes the noise is really annoying but from the other side my card can reach 1250/1700 with stock voltages running 3dmark full test, tested stability at 1200/1600 for some hours, but I use it as 1000/1500.

Headphones. They'll help you appreciate 3dmark11's "original" musical score :p

Yeah, I have the same noise with BOTH of my cards. Annoying, but only if I dont have my headphones on, which I do all the time, so I guess it's not a problem for me.

However, does it really mean that there is something wrong with the card? Or is it completely normal? I'm just thinking long term.

One of my fans makes a high pitched whine, but only when it spins at 35%. Very weird - 36% and no whine...

Same goes for mine, coil whine in 3d apps/games, LOUD coil whine in 3d apps without Vsync and also some "strange" noises from fans. Overclocks really high though.

But I have an XFX and its written on it "Ghost Edition" so I guess there is a ghost in my card...

The coil whine comes from near the fan or from it...
not sure which component it is coming from...

I bought 2 sapphire 7970, one had really really loud whine, 1 had a much more quieter whine, i want to say about 30% of the first one.

So it's a crap shoot sometimes.

You damn young kids! Wait until you get my age. You won't hear shit! Honestly, I hear nothing but the fan whirring.

yeah age seems to eliminate coil whine had to get my 16 year old to tell me what it sounded like - lol

LOL, yeah that's presbycusis. I can hardly wait until I have it. In fact, I'm probably on my way toward experiencing the symptoms -- or not experiencing, as it were. You'll never hear those pesky high-pitched sounds again!

You could also probably add one of these to your lawn ornaments:

That'll keep them off.

Hummm actually I am 34

I know some sound frequencies you can hear only when you are a child, but this coil whine I can hear it really clear

Personally, I wouldn't bother returning unless you can hear it with the case on.

My ears ring all the time so i wouldn't notice the difference :)

My card whines pretty loudly when the Alan Wake logo appears as I start the game. I'm geting something like 3000 fps. Doesn't happen with v sync. Oh well, the card rips
