They claimed SP/co-op was the focus, but we've mainly been seeing stuff for the PvP mode. I assume that is because WIP AI is not worth showing, but I'd rather not see gameplay of PvP and just them explaining small features. Tactical shooters are based on the SP/co-op. Commanding and micromanaging a squad, that is where the tactics come from hence the title of the genre. That is what made SWAT and Rainbow 6 classics and genre defining. PvP? They were there, but mostly forgotten.

Plus seeing dozens of people flock to talk about how this will compare to CS/R6 Siege will be nauseating.

I still remember the first SWAT game I had like 15-20 years ago.

It was the most tedious thing in the world. You had to go through all this training, the load times were horrendous, then you finally got to a mission and I had no idea what I was doing. Probably because I was like ten years old.

I backed this game at the supporter tier, and have been playing the alpha since day one. I won't say much since they take the NDA seriously (not sure how they got permission to make the video above). I'm hopeful it'll be good, though. It's still very alpha. I question if the beta will really be ready for June, but I also don't know how close the released alpha is to where they are internally. There aren't frequent updates, so I'm hoping there is a lot of progress I'm not seeing.

The foundation that is there, feels good. It's without a doubt a spiritual successor to SWAT 4, which is exactly what I wanted it to be. SWAT 4 is one of my favorite games of all time, all I wanted was a modern version of that. With enough polish, I am confident RON will be that game.

What I needed to hear. I still think they're better off not showing PvP gameplay if they don't have anything ready for SP/co-op.

Agreed, I don't think most people are worried about PVP for this. Truthfully, I think they showed PVP because SP just isn't ready. I don't think development is on track, and I don't think they are ready to share that information. I think come June, the beta is going to be delayed. I expect the release date to be pushed to 2021. And quite honestly, I'm fine with that. I paid $100 for Takedown, and that game was a steaming pile of shit. I want a good game in this genre so bad it hurts. I'd rather wait and see RON done right than see them push out the game unfinished just to say it was on time, and then abandon it.

I need this to be good.

No kidding. I still regularly play SWAT 4, 15 years running now. In my opinion, it's the best FPS ever made (and I don't mean by 2005 standards, I mean ever). I want this game to be "SWAT 5" so bad it hurts. If they can pull it off, I'll probably get 15 years out of this one too.

The name is absolutely terrible. They plan on changing it right?

I'm neutral on it. I don't think it really personifies what the game is about, but I also don't care. Maybe the though process was that a well known, cliche saying would make it more memorable or more likely to catch the attention of someone who doesn't pay attention to the niche tactical FPS genre?

It might benefit from a name change but when the time comes hopefully there is some decent marketing for it as can be realistically done.

Notice: At the request of the publisher, Ready Or Not is unlisted on the Steam store and will not appear in search.

Doesn't sound good, not sure why they'd do that. Been waiting to pre-order for a while. They apparently have two weapon DLCs now, which is annoying to say the least. Wonder how much the game plus DLC will be day one.

It's been that way since the game first hit Steam.

They are using Steam for the alpha, and created the Steam page with the intent to open up pre-orders on Steam. The powers that be at Steam told them they would not be able to offer pre-orders on the game (it is apparently Steam policy that the first game you publish on Steam cannot accept pre-orders). My best guess is that the devs wanted it unlisted so that when new people hear about the game, they are more likely to be directed to their website (where pre-orders are still being taken) versus being directed to Steam where they won't have the option to pre-order and may assume that no pre-order is being offered. It's more likely someone would just follow / wishlist on Steam and then move along.

I think this is why you see so many new devs going early-access, because it's the only way to generate revenue prior to release if they are not eligible for a pre-order. In the case of RoN, I don't think EA would have been wise, the game is not complete enough or playable enough to live up to most peoples (unrealistic) expectations for an early access game. They would have been review bombed from the start by people who don't understand what an alpha is, and that could be difficult to recover from when the game is polished into a finished product.

Regarding the weapon DLC's, this was done as a way to throw a bone to the supporters who did not get the beta in June as promised. Like it or not, there is logic to it, the only people affected by the delay (in the sense that they aren't getting what they paid for) is the people who bought in at the supporter tier. It's not unreasonable to make new content that is exclusive for them as a thank you... and also I don't find it unreasonable to sell that content as DLC post-release. It's one of those situations where someone is going to find fault no matter what they do... so they might as well support the people who supported them. Same goes for the HRT pack, which has been a bonus only for the supporters since day one. I don't know if they plan to sell it as DLC, but I think it's probably safe to say yes.

It's not uncommon to have DLC as a pre-order bonus that is made available for sale post-release. I don't see why it's any more egregious when VOID does it than when Ubisoft or EA do it. About the only potential concern I see is how a weapon DLC will tie into MP. You know people will whine P2W (whether an advantage is real or not). They either need to make all weapons available to everyone for PVP, or make the DLC unavailable for PVP.

Apparently they had changed a lot of things prior without proper testing for that event. Things like weapon orientation in first person got screwed up, hence the odd twisted wrists when sprinting with pistols. PvP, as expect, looks like crap. As long as the SP and co-op are still the main modes that isn't that big of an issue. Apparently the weapon handling has gotten better again from what I have heard as well as some of the other janky things. But still a way to go I assume. Doubt it will hit the 2020 release date.

I'm not optimistic about this game's prospects all told given that development history to date.

They should not have done their whole PVP event that they did. The game wasn't ready to be shown off and PVP isn't what people wanted anyway. I am also pretty skeptical of a 2020 release, and honestly at this point I'm almost hoping it gets pushed to 2021. I'd rather wait to get the game done right.

Pretty much. I guess they felt the need to show something, but another dev blog would have been better. They needed to wait until the SP was worth showing off. PvP mode will be dead within a few months anyways, and PvP games pretty much all look the same.

As for the less lethal it does look a bit unrealistic and too effective, much like it was in SWAT 4 and I assume 3. But they're making some concessions for gameplay and are trying to go for the SWAT 3/4 feel it seems. Personally I'd prefer it being more realistic. If less lethal was that effective, we'd pretty much go for that straight away over lethal weapons.

This game will be getting RTX.

Nvidia RTX Page

Not too sure how this has been progressing but seems like they're getting a fair bit done but I am doubting the beta will be out later this year. For me I'm waiting until release. At best, pre-order for a discount and try the beta just a tiny bit to check out basic mechanics.

I'm more interested in the fact that Nvidia seems to think this is going to end up early access in Steam. No official mention has been made of that anywhere by the devs, but Nvidia is saying it in multiple locations.

I'm happy to see this though. Rtx support should get the game more exposure. I really, really want this game to succeed.

I think they're going off of old info. Game won't be in beta in 2020, we have 2 months and a week left. Likewise, they can't put the game in early access on Steam because it is their first project. Apparently Valve does not allow that anymore. But maybe something changed...

Weapon animations are looking decent to. Not up to par with CoD MW, but pretty close. Could use some smoothing.

Looks like it is getting DLSS support as well.

From the Nvidia website:

In other news, seems like the beta is pushed back. Sounds like it won't get released until late 2021 at this point. If Nvidia is marketing it, I assume they must have had some back and fourth with the developers which gives me some confidence despite the delays.

It definitely needs work. The videos linked earlier look atrocious.

And I'm fine with waiting. Been about 15 years, I can wait a bit longer to get it right.

They haven't been showing off the SP for months and are apparently doing a lot on the NPC/AI/animation side of things. I really hope so. Dumb AI and bad animations will break this type of game.

Yep, beta was pushed back until June 2021. Assuming they meet that goal, should make for a late-summer to early-fall 2021 release. Which, as someone who paid $120 for this game, I'm fine with it. If I have to choose between having a game soon, and having a game good... it will always be the later. I want this game to be good more than i've ever wanted any game to be good. I will wait however long it takes to make that happen.

I'm trying to take Nvidia's involvement in this game as a good thing. I don't know if Nvidia is giving them money... but they are certainly giving them exposure. I'd like to think they wouldn't do that unless they've seen something that their early backers have not.

Agreed. Kind of like how Microsoft backed STALKER 2 in some official capacity. Doesn't meant the games will be great, but they must have seen something to plaster their support on it for both cases.

Still disappointed about the delay though. Been a while since I've done Raven Shield (I played SWAT 4 first) and it obviously hasn't aged as well since it came out earlier. But might consider trying it again. I do a SWAT 4 run every year or so and been wanting to play something similar again...
