I have a friend who wants to find out who this specific e-mail came from. Assuming I'm right - smtp-in9.libero.it - would my friend then have to contact them to find out the account it came from?

Thanks!

Correct you need to contact whoever is in charge of libero.it

Now keep in mind they probably wont give your friend any information since it looks like the email was just relayed over their network and even for privacy reasons.
