Razer Ripped Off at CES 2017

Wouldn't mind seeing whoever stole it get either their hand or a few fingers chopped off. Hard to steal when you have a stump.

No jailtime, no fine, just lose your hand or fingers and off you go.

edit: I realize this won't ever happen, but it's fun to think about.

I just filed a claim for 6 Ipads, pelican case and wireless router with misc. cords at a freeman managed show, that went missing a few months back. We had fedX tracking stating it was received and singed for at the show but it never made it to our our booth.

I was reimbursed $41 as that was the max coverage based on our show contract. More then likely they will never find the stuff nor with they be reimbursed for the value of said equipment.

Alienware to announce new laptop with three 4k foldout screens. Pay no attention to the glowing Razer logo under the alien face.

;)

Curious if the laptops were secured to the booth. I can't imagine Razer just left them loose but the balls to steal not one but two prototypes is amazing. Really surprised if Razer doesn't have a way to track the laptops.

Trade shows are notorious for having tech stolen; that is why you lock it down or use plexi cases.

Hey.. wait a minute..

CES is being held in LAS VEGAS!!

Steve lives in LAS VEGAS!!

Steve isn't posting news items today.. Kyle is instead... so WHERE IS STEVE??

CASE SOLVED!!

How did this even happen? I've been watching Linus' coverage of CES, and Razer had a suite where these were...

They'll play it for a day or two and it'll break on them.

You would think they would secure their prototypes a bit better. Maybe they'll learn.

If it was the triple screen laptop, that's pretty brazen since it was behind glass.

CES is target number one for industrial espionage, and it's held at the same place every year, yet they didn't think to cover the place in CCTV cameras?

Sadly, the idea of "intellectual property" is like this mythical, nebulous concept in China which everyone is aware of, but most manufacturers over there cheerfully ignore.
As friends of mine (from the PRC/Russia) like to say, the idea of intellectual (and physical) property being a communal resource is a "byproduct" of communism/socialism.

i remember a picture comparing the things razer stole from already existing products and saying that they're "new".

they also need to up their QA and support game by a shit ton.

It's bad that it was stolen, but there was no secret tech behind the extra attached screens, our the keyboard LED lights

If they didn't protect themselves from theft, then it's their own damned fault. Don't get me wrong, I think thieves aren't punished hard enough.

There are places in the world where this happens on a regular basis. Be thankful you do not live in such shitholes.

He's an annoying little shit, but he gets the clicks. I curse myself inwardly when I wind up watching one of his videos, because I can't find what I'm looking for on another channel.
Thing is.. anytime I end up watching one of his vids, I promise myself to not bother watching anymore.

From what I can tell, I could probably do just as good, if not better. I learn basically nothing from his vids as I try to keep up on tech pretty well. But I have an actual day job and am not ready to ditch it for something like a youtube channel.

Well, they could have had some unique design as far as the hinges that the added screens swivel on go. Mechanical stuff like this can be surprisingly challenging sometimes.

Yep, up until the E series from Dell, they had major issue with their regular hinge design on their laptops.

The really old ones had a weird spring/bolt design, and then the D600-D630 series.. and probably the D800 series had a weird aluminum design that the screws would always come loose from the laptop and the screen itself. When it was really bad, it would end up breaking the motherboard tray.

Even the E series and the Precision series had that issue up until the newest release. I make sure to retighten the screws way tighter than from the factory before I redeploy them.

I haven't had the newest series long enough to see if it still happens.

Thing is, it should be fairly simple to fix. I think the main problem is that the plastic from the laptop chassis squishes over time and then that makes the screws come loose. If they just did a metal to metal mount instead of having the layer of plastic in between it would probably take care of it completely.

Maybe some Loctite on the screws would help?

Not sure how a person could have grabbed this during the show.

I hope the booth staff weren't stupid enough to leave it there over night with all the maintenance people.

I don't feel bad for razer at all. it's their fault they didn't secure it. It's on them have a live video feed and to protect their assets. I don't condone stealing at all, but it you leave stuff unlocked? what do you think is going to happen?

Whose to say it wasn't secured, and someone snuck in a bolt cutter? :p
