This doesn't sound right, why would a mouse need always-on internet connection? I shot an e-mail over to Razer to see what they had to say. I'll let you know if we hear something back. Thanks to [H] forum member one_fell_swoop for the link.

WTF?!? If this is true talk about shooting yourself in the foot. Imagine if the product registered with a unique serial number and now you couldn't resell it because its linked to your online account. There is always also the old going to someplace with no internet on your notebook and wanting to kill a few hours, but now you can't load your mouses settings because there is no internet. Grim future we live in indeed.

Yeah how strange that they would assume the people using a mouse designed for MMO players would have internet to at least activate their mouse software. The software has presets for specific games so my guess is that is why they did this to keep it current.

It may be poor design, but not really a huge deal IMHO

Unfortunately, I'm addicted to Deathadders. Even more unfortunately, they tend to live up to the first half of their name.

Fortunately, they're often sold for peanuts on overstock sites.

I found it odd when I had to create an account and log in to use my mouse(After upgrading to the new software). Never had to do that before. It was implemented with the new cloud feature me thinks.

Great mouse but, I didn't care for that logging in every time part.

Quit pirating mice and manufacturers won't have to resort to this.

Designing peripheral hardware with a ground state of fail is openly customer hostile. Not to get into hyperbole, but its beyond the pale and any self respecting gamer should seek alternatives, full stop. There is an argument ot be made for video game DRM, there is NONE to be made on perepheral type of hardware.

P.S note the use of the word 'peripheral', which i intended to deflect any wider argument on hardware in general, which is already a lost cause.

Settle down everybody. The new Synapse driver software requires you to create an account and have an internet connection. Ive been using it since it came out and its totally transparent and I have yet to have anything interrupted by it.

If you still dont want it, you can use download and use the "regular" drivers just like before. As of right now, theyre still being supported. The last update to the legacy drivers for my Deathadder was updated today.

Synapse also has an offline mode. If you lose youre internet connections, your devices will still work like normal.

The Synapse software is actually pretty cool especially if youre using a Razer keyboard and mouse. You can click on it and there are the settings for both your devices on one screen. I like it.

That makes, absolutely no sense to me. What the shit? Mouse Piracy?

I really dont know what a mouse has to do with the internet. Ive used my trusty Logitech MX518's for years now, I wouldnt use a shitty razor mouse anyways, but thats another discussion.

The internet connection is required to sign in and get updates and all that shit easier and more frequently. From what I gather from reading about it, the other idea was for gamers that might take their mice and keyboard over to a buddies house and game on their rig. You sign into Synapse and all your settings are there. Or something like that.

Either way, its not a FULL TIME connection like DRM and its OPTIONAL. If you dont want to use Synapse, you DONT HAVE TO. You can use the standard drivers til the cows come home. Like I said, I like it cause I can Alt/Tab out of a game if I want to change my Deathadder's resolution or something, pop it open and access my Black Widow and my Deathadder in one shot. Plus the UI is better than the standard drivers.

I have that same functionality with both corsair and Logitech and neither require a call home. No thanks Razer, not that I needed any more reason to hate their Crap mice. Though I do love their mouse mats.

On a serious note, Id question the business logic of someone who would make a mouse require an internet connection. By this fact I am taking a guess that this means without one the mouse wont work? Id hate to be the first poor sucker who buys one trying to use it offline wondering why the mouse wont work. lul.

What about in bios situations or circumstances where an internet connection hasnt been made yet. Hmmmmph..

No! You DO NOT HAVE TO USE SYNAPSE! Its a totally optional software that you can use if you want to. If you dont, you just use the standard drivers that are readily available right below the download link for Synapse. And it works offline. It doesnt require an internet connection for your devices to work, only to upload your settings and download any updates.

Even Skribbels are having trouble coming up with something to say about this because its so strange and stupid. Though, I wonder if they'll do this for their "high precision mouse mats" next.

Thats because they just came out with it. Its not meant for LAN parties where you take your entire rig. Its meant for when you might take your mouse over to somebody's house and game on their rig. Ill never use it either and dont think many people will. I just like it cause it keeps updates coming for my devices and I really like the UI as Im frequently in there tweaking on things.

How many software updates does it take to make a mouse work properly? If they're that stink-o at making drivers they should probably get into another business like cardboard box making or maybe cooking waffles.

What do you mean? I have feeds from their driver teams going into any one of my 7 browser toolbars just so I can be up to the minute.

If you want up-to-date drivers, which most everyone on this site does, it's apparently not optional.

Regardless, the nerd rage is over requiring an internet connection to use a fucking mouse. Will you defend the notion when it comes to keyboards? Monitors? Headsets? It's a stupid, stupid precedent in a time when, unfortunately, DRM is not on any real decline.

Seriously? How many times do I have to say it. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO HAVE AN INTERNET CONNECTION TO USE A MOUSE OR KEYBOARD OR ANYTHING! It works offline just as well and, again, you dont have to use it at all. It is 100% OPTIONAL! The standard legacy drivers are right there, right below the download links for Synapse. They work just as well and are being updated.

Now if they do away with the standard drivers and Synapse is all that is available and requires internet then Ill be right there nerd raging with you all. But I do not understand this blind rage over a totally optional piece of software.

I just bought one of their Black Widow Ultimate keyboards yesterday. I thought it was odd that I had to have an account just to get the software. Then I had no settings to stop it from loading with Windows. Not sure if I'm liking this "Steam/Origin" type of must have or you dont get business from a Keyboard/Mouse company. Still have 28 more days to return if I change my mind...

Yall gonna make me lose my mind up in here to quote DMX.

Go here and look right below the Synapse software. Its the old legacy drivers. They dont require an internet connection or account or anything.
