randomly switching windows

windows (7) is switching windows on me, seemingly at random. I'll be in the middle of something in one window, and it will switch me to another, recent window, almost like a sort of phantom alt-tab. Or, mayble clicks events in windows aren't being triggered until much later, when a different window is at the forefront, causing a switch.

Whatever it is, its been annoying me for some time. Anyone have any idea how to make it not do that?

I thought it was a firefox thing, but it seems it affects other applications as well.
