My system is getting a little old (built in 2012) and I'm looking at upgrades. The system specs are:
    Intel Core i5 3570K
    Asus P8Z77-V LK Motherboard
    G.Skill Ripjaws Series F3-12800CL9D-8GBRL 2 x 4GB DDR3 1600 RAM
    eVGA 02G-P4-2670-KR GeForce GTX 670 2GB PCI-E Video Card

I'm looking to upgrade my GTX 670 to a 1060 6GB or RX 580, but I was thinking about adding a little more memory (from 8GB to 16GB) at the same time.

Would it be best to add another 2x4 kit or replace the current kit with a 2x8? Are the potential compatibility issues? And is this even a good idea?

I'd like to stretch this rig out for another couple years if possible, so I thought adding a little more RAM might help with gaming (PUBG generally).

I'd appreciate any advice, and specific examples would be extremely useful.

RAM upgrade wouldn't be a bad idea. I'd probably just buy a working used kit though, can get another 8GB for around $35-40 ish.

FWIW, PUBG likes high clocked ram. If you can find something that will run at 2133 or better at decent timings, grab it.

You don’t generally need more than 8gb of RAM for gaming yet.

Frametimes can be improved by a smidge and minimum frame rates can maybe be improved by a smidge (maybe 10% on some titles), but averages and maximum FPS will largely stay the same between 8 and 16GB.
