I recently purchased some WD 6TB Pro Red drives to go with an HP z800 and Areca 1880i. The z800 has a bay with 4 trays for the drives that attach to SATA connectors with cables already run to the motherboard. I have removed the right side panel and it turns out that the SATA connectors in the hard drive bay are attached to a separate device. So it is not a standard SATA cable that can be unplugged and swapped out; and I am stuck with the existing female SATA connectors coming from the bay.
I had also purchased an SFF-8087 cable to break out the SAS connection on the 1880i to 4 SATA connections. The manual for adding a card shows a Mini SAS cable connecting to the already established SATA cables (http://h20565.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=emr_na-c02027249); but it seems no such cable exists.
It seems there are two options:
1. Utilize SATA male-to-male couplers (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0033Z74L2)
2. Find the elusive Mini SAS to male SATA breakout cable
Does a Mini SAS to male SATA breakout cable exist? Are the SATA male-to-male couplers ok to use in this situation (are they reliable and performant)? Alternately, am I missing something? Is there some other straightforward solution of which I'm not aware? It's my first time using a RAID card and SAS.
