Raid accessible in AHCI mode?

I initially installed Win7 in AHCI mode, thinking I wouldn't bother with RAID.
A little over a year down the line, I find that I want to do a RAID 0 setup for my games with drives from an upgrade NAS box.
I tried to see if I could make the switch without having to re-install.

This is on an Asus Rampage Extreme IV. the X79 chipset.

Experience.
Switched AHCI->RAID in BIOS.
Setup RAID0 volume.
Reboot.
Windows failed to boot regularly or in safe mode.

Switched RAID->AHCI in BIOS
Reboot
Windows boots.

As I was mucking with disk management, Windows sees a disk that matches the RAID0 volume I created.
Device Manage shows an Intel RAID 0 Volume SCSI disk device.
However, Intel's Rapid Storage Technology software doesn't detect this disk at all.

I was always under the impression that if Windows can't load the drivers, the RAID volumes would be unusable, since it relies on some software component (driver) to handle some RAID responsibility.

Am I misunderstanding this?

it cant be done by just changing the bios, they use different drivers, you would first need the raid drivers in windows, maybe check out some of these

Yeah, I read some of those articles and wasn't able to get past the bsod during boot in RAID, even in Safe mode.

Now, I'm curious as to why the raid volume shows up even though the BIOS is set to AHCI mode.

Well, after trolling through all the search results, If found something that's super helpful.
Worked for me and didn't involve safe mode.

Though from experience, I was able to access the RAID 0 volume I created via the mid-BIOS screen for the controller.
With the drivers installed, I can now create/modify RAID volumes via windows as well.

Good article, I recently changed out power supplies, when I booted back up(to a rig with 1ssd in achi mode, no joy, used to have 2 ssd in raid 0, now it was working in achi prior to the switchout, I reset the bios back to raid and all is well. Go figure I am not running a raid array anymore.
